Chapter 27: Do You Really Think You Can Cover the Sky with One Hand?

~9 min read 1,620 words

For three consecutive days, Zhu Yuan traveled only between the hospital and the theater.

However, Li Jie had not been seen at the troupe these past few days; people said she was on leave, which was something that had never happened before.

Tomorrow was the day of Grandfather's surgery. Recently, Zhu Yuan did not need to rehearse new plays, and the performances arranged by the troupe were all in the afternoon. With nothing to do in the evening, she went to the hospital early after the curtain call.

Just as she entered the room, she saw several boxes of supplements placed on the floor by Grandfather's hospital bed; judging by the brands, they were quite expensive.

"Grandfather, who came by?" Zhu Yuan put down her bag and sat beside Zhu Qi.

Zhu Qi was reading a newspaper; he was in a good state of mind for tomorrow's surgery.

He took off his reading glasses to look at his granddaughter and asked in confusion, "Wasn't it your friend? I thought you knew."

"A friend?"

Zhu Yuan quickly ran through her mind everyone she could call a friend.

She had two close friends, one male and one female, both from Yucheng.

That was the city she had been sent to.

One was from a family that had gone bankrupt and was mired in endless lawsuits, and the other was the type who couldn't be reached for half a month while working with Doctors Without Borders; neither of them was by her side.

Aside from them knowing about her returning to the Zhu Family to acknowledge her ancestors, she had kept everything else hidden.

Who else would claim to be her friend?

Sheng Yu's habitually cold face flashed through her mind subconsciously, those deep black eyes that made one's soul tremble when he stared.

They hadn't seen each other since he forcibly kissed her in the theater's VIP lounge that day.

Yet, she felt uneasy.

She didn't show too much nervousness, instead asking casually, "Did the person say what their name was?"

Zhu Qi thought for a moment, "He said his surname is Lou."

Zhu Yuan's heart skipped a beat.

Lou Yi!

He had actually found the hospital where Grandfather was staying and appeared before him; what was he trying to do?

At this moment, her phone rang.

Looking at the string of unfamiliar numbers, she had an intuition that this call was from Lou Yi.

"Grandfather, I'm going out to take a call."

Zhu Yuan walked out of the ward and closed the door behind her. Just as she was about to swipe the screen, she saw a patient being wheeled into the neighboring ward out of the corner of her eye; the person was in a wheelchair, pushed by a nurse and his companion.

The moment Zhu Yuan glanced over unintentionally, the two men nodded slightly toward her, revealing a sinister smile.

Zhu Yuan was stunned, and a cold sweat broke out on her back. The faces of these two men looked familiar, very much like...

The people Lou Yi had sent to chase her that night!

They were Lou Yi's men; he had arranged for his subordinates to be in the ward next to Grandfather's to threaten her.

With a cold face, Zhu Yuan swiped the screen and held the phone to her ear, "What exactly do you want!"

On the other end of the line, Lou Yi sneered, "What's wrong, Xiao Fengzheng? Why so much anger? I specifically went to the hospital to visit your grandfather today; shouldn't you treat a friend with this kind of attitude?"

"What exactly do you want!" Zhu Yuan repeated.

"Nothing much," Lou Yi seemed to be lighting a cigarette on the other side, "Your grandfather is having surgery tomorrow, so I specifically sent people to keep an eye on things nearby to avoid any complications. I'm being so good to you, yet you talk to me with this attitude, Xiao Fengzheng; you really break my heart."

"Then I thank you, but you're overthinking it. Nothing will happen, you can withdraw your people."

"How could I do that? Your grandfather is my grandfather; I must ensure his personal safety. Xiao Fengzheng, don't be a stranger with me."

Like a piece of dog-skin plaster, he couldn't be shaken off. Zhu Yuan knew he wouldn't give up until his goal was achieved, "I told you, your getting beaten has nothing to do with me. If you want to find someone, find the person who hit you. I'm telling you, that person is Sheng Yu."

"Who?"

Sheng Yu's reputation was well-known; as the Sheng Family Crown Prince, who in Jingdu City dared to provoke him?

Sure enough, when Zhu Yuan said Sheng Yu's name, Lou Yi was startled.

But soon, Lou Yi realized that Zhu Yuan was playing with him.

As if he had heard some funny joke, he laughed a few times and raised his voice, "Then tell me, why would Sheng Yu hit me? Don't tell me he took a fancy to you and hit me to vent his anger?"

"You're quite smart." At this point, Zhu Yuan couldn't care about distancing herself from Sheng Yu.

She had to solve the immediate problem first.

On the other end, Lou Yi laughed in anger, "What kind of person is Sheng Yu? Would a dignified Sheng Family Crown Prince take a fancy to a woman like you who is already engaged? Not to mention Lu Huaizhan is his good brother; even a rabbit doesn't eat the grass by its own burrow. Who are you trying to scare?"

"Knowing I don't dare to trouble Sheng Yu, you use his name to pressure me. Xiao Fengzheng, you are too unkind."

He suddenly lowered his voice and said ambiguously, "I don't need you to do anything. Since you want me to withdraw my people so badly, come find me. Let's talk in person at the hotel across the street from the hospital; I'll be waiting for you."

However, Zhu Yuan hung up the phone before he could even finish speaking.

The night grew deep.

A series of thumping sounds came from the wall of the ward where the lights had already been turned off.

Zhu Yuan sat up from the folding bed and looked at her grandfather, who was tossing and turning on the bed. The doctor had instructed him to rest early tonight, as getting enough energy would be beneficial for tomorrow's surgery.

But with such noise, Grandfather couldn't rest at all.

Zhu Yuan got up and walked out of the ward. She didn't knock on the door of the neighboring ward, but instead went to the nurse station to ask for help.

The nurse knocked on the other party's ward door.

Who would have thought those two men would pretend nothing had happened, even turning the tables, "What's wrong? We were resting just fine; there was no sound at all. It's the middle of the night, can't people even rest?"

The nurse was driven out and glanced at Zhu Yuan impatiently, "Did you hear wrong? Go back and rest quickly, there's still surgery tomorrow."

Zhu Yuan had no choice but to return to the ward first.

Not long after, the thumping sounds started again.

Grandfather was worried about disturbing her rest, so he kept in one position, making her think he had fallen asleep.

The sound grew louder and louder. Zhu Yuan heart-wrenchingly tucked the quilt in for her grandfather and took out her phone to start recording. After successfully recording over ten seconds of the sound, she played the audio for the nurse.

The nurse also heard the commotion this time and knocked on the other party's hospital room door again.

Who would have thought the other party would repeat the same excuse as before.

Even after Zhu Yuan played that audio clip, the other party still wore an arrogant expression, "Who can prove that the noise came from my room? I'm telling you, I'm feeling very unwell right now and need to rest; if you disturb me again, I'll call the police!"

Zhu Yuan and the nurse were shooed out of the room.

The room next door emitted an even louder noise than before, and Zhu Yuan took out her phone to call the security office, but after the call went through, no one from the security office was dispatched.

There was no need to guess; it had been controlled by Lou Yi.

Zhu Yuan glanced at the time; it was almost twelve o'clock, and her grandfather usually went to sleep after eight, yet he had been forced to stay up until now.

Zhu Yuan could not bear to see her grandfather continue to stay up.

At this moment, her phone rang again.

It was that same number.

Zhu Yuan simply hung up, but not long after, the phone rang again.

She left the room to answer the call, and Lou Yi's greasy voice reached her ears, "Xiao Fengzheng, why aren't you asleep so late? Are you unable to sleep because of the noise? Come over to me, and I'll hold you so you can have a good sleep."

"Lou Yi, do you really think you can cover the sky with one hand?"

Lou Yi sneered, "Whether I can or not isn't important, as long as it's enough to suppress you. If you obediently lie beneath me and let me have my fun, I can leave your grandfather alone, but if you continue to be this disobedient, I can't guarantee what I might do. I hear your grandfather has a bad heart and can't handle any shocks, right?"

No sooner had he finished speaking than Zhu Yuan heard a terrified scream coming from her grandfather's room!
