Chapter 706: Waiting for Death Is the Most Terrifying

~4 min read 704 words

Yu Dazhang heard every word of Xu Dui’s call clearly.

The call came from the technical department, and the message was simple: the email account had been logged into.

The login time was 11:12 a.m., and the IP address was traced to Jinling Bus Station.

Zhang Jiangke has come to Jinling… When Yu Dazhang heard the location was Jinling, he couldn’t help but feel excited.

The IP address being at the bus station doesn’t mean Zhang Jiangke arrived by bus.

It’s far more likely he stayed near the station last night, since the busier the place, the more chaotic it becomes.

At this moment, Yu Dazhang had already formed a rough hypothesis.

The rented apartment must have hidden cameras installed.

Zhang Jiangke hid near the bus station last night, intending to use this camera to observe whether anyone else entered the apartment.

His thinking matched Xu Dui’s: if the police had set an ambush inside the apartment, they would surely station someone inside to wait.

“All officers within the compound, immediately conceal yourselves near Building 17.”

Yu Dazhang picked up the radio and ordered:

“The suspect is approaching; no one is to be exposed outdoors, to avoid alerting him.”

He was a paranoid old fox; to ensure absolute safety, Yu Dazhang decided on the most cautious strategy.

He had just put down the radio when Xu Dui asked:

“Is that necessary? Once Zhang Jiangke enters the compound, we arrest him immediately—do you think he can escape?”

He thought Yu Dazhang was being overly cautious.

So many armed detectives were hidden inside the compound; catching a human trafficker was more than enough.

Even if Zhang Jiangke had two guns, he couldn’t escape the provincial police’s encirclement.

“I’m not worried about whether he can escape.”

Yu Dazhang leaned back in his chair, half-closing his eyes:

“This 61-year-old man knows exactly what awaits him after arrest.”

“For a man like him, death isn’t terrifying—it’s the waiting for death that’s truly horrifying.”

At these words, the car fell silent.

After about a minute, Xu Dui spoke:

“You mean, if he realizes he’s surrounded by police, he’ll swallow poison and kill himself immediately?”

Yu Dazhang nodded, speaking thoughtfully:

“A human trafficker who settled in Mianbei is proof that Zhang Jiangke possesses a ruthlessness ordinary people lack.”

“This ruthlessness isn’t just directed at others—it’s equally applied to himself.”

After a brief pause, he continued:

“And he’s an old fox who can rapidly assess a situation; once he realizes escape is impossible, he’ll likely swallow poison outright, denying us any chance to capture him alive.”

This was what he feared most.

Zhang Jiangke isn’t like ordinary human traffickers; the more someone who plans three steps ahead, the more ruthless they are toward themselves.

Because he can see his final outcome, even imagine the days waiting for judgment in detention.

Those days would be torture for him—worse than death itself.

But if he dies, this lead is gone forever.

So, under no circumstances can Zhang Jiangke be allowed to commit suicide by poison.

“When you see Zhang Jiangke, no one is to act rashly.”

Xu Dui now understood the gravity of the situation and immediately ordered into the radio:

“Team Two, take position on the fourth floor of Building 17; everyone else must stay out of Zhang Jiangke’s line of sight.”

After putting down the radio, Xu Dui looked at Yu Dazhang.

“Do we move before he enters the building, or let him go inside?”

He had stationed Team Two on the fourth floor precisely to arrest Zhang Jiangke as he climbed the stairs.

This way, they could approach him while he was unguarded, increasing the chance of a successful capture.

“He won’t give you that chance.”

Yu Dazhang stared at the main gate of the compound, speaking in a low tone:

“Even if Zhang Jiangke comes, he’ll definitely disguise his appearance—if he lacked even this basic awareness, he couldn’t have evaded capture for so many years.”

His words revealed his deep understanding of Zhang Jiangke:

“Disguise alone isn’t enough—he’ll wait for the right moment and use someone else as cover.”

Finally, Yu Dazhang made his decision:

“Call Team Two back; stationing our people in the stairwell will only create unnecessary complications.”
