Chapter 707

~3 min read 579 words

“Understood.” Xu Dui nodded, then couldn’t help asking:

“Should I go with you?”

He’d wanted to ask ever since watching Yu Dazhang inspect his sidearm.

According to regulations, such situations typically require at least two criminal investigators to go together, ensuring safety and readiness for any unexpected developments.

But exceptions exist; the final decision must still be based on actual conditions at the scene.

“What do you think Zhang Jiangke will do if he sees two people blocking his door?” Yu Dazhang asked.

“He…” Xu Dui hesitated only a moment before answering:

“Two people means he has no chance to escape. If he’s truly decided to kill himself, he’ll act immediately and leave us no chance to capture him alive.”

Just one extra person changes the threat level completely.

People always harbor Jiaoxing psychology.

In a one-on-one situation, one often feels they can fight back, that they still have a chance to turn things around.

But when the opponent goes from one to two, everything changes—those Jiaoxing feelings vanish.

“Only one of us can go.”

Yu Dazhang finished speaking, opened the car door, and stepped out.

This time, Xu Dui said nothing more.

Only he and Yu Dazhang could now face Zhang Jiangke.

If he went up himself, he couldn’t guarantee he’d capture Zhang Jiangke alive.

He didn’t even know how to persuade Zhang Jiangke to surrender.

Talking morality to a seasoned human trafficker like him was pure waste of breath—he wouldn’t listen, and would only look down on you.

Entering the residential building, Yu Dazhang walked straight to the door of the third-floor rental unit.

Smoke?

Not just one kind—this was a foul blend of cheap cigarettes from multiple brands.

By his sense of smell alone, Yu Dazhang could tell this heavy stench required at least three people smoking simultaneously.

And this smell was coming from above?

Following the odor, Yu Dazhang climbed step by step, his hand resting on his sidearm.

He crept carefully to the fifth floor—and there, sure enough, he found four men in camouflage uniforms, sitting on the floor, a canvas bag beside them filled with tools.

Seeing Yu Dazhang, they sprang to their feet and stepped aside, clearing the hallway.

Before they could speak, Yu Dazhang pulled out his credentials, flashed them once, then made a shushing gesture.

Seeing the four men nod, he finally spoke:

“Keep it quiet. I ask, you answer. What are you doing here?”

“Someone hired us to do a job,” one man whispered.

“He said to pack up valuables first, and we were to wait here.”

Yu Dazhang couldn’t help curling his lip at this excuse.

Who ever brings someone back first, then goes to collect valuables? But for these temporary laborers, such an excuse was understandable.

They cared only about the employer’s pay—other details meant nothing to them.

“How long have you been here?” Yu Dazhang asked again.

The man thought for a moment, then replied:

“Over half an hour. He paid well upfront, so we didn’t press him.”

You’re practically accomplices… Yu Dazhang pressed:

“Why wait on the fifth floor?”

“He brought us up here,” the man answered without hesitation.

“He told us he’d call us once he was done. Employers who do this to keep us from sneaking around—we’ve seen it before. As long as he pays us, it’s fine.”

Yu Dazhang then pulled out his phone, pulled up Zhang Jiangke’s photo, and showed it to them.

After receiving their confirmed identification, he finally exhaled.
