Chapter 31: This Fate is Like a Bridge!

~9 min read 1,700 words

The accomplices in the van saw a sudden obstacle appear out of nowhere, threw open the doors, and charged out with murderous intent.

The leader, his hand wrapped in bandages and gripping a watermelon knife, didn't say a word before hacking toward Tang Ye.

Du Xi moved to cover Tang Ye, kicking the opponent squarely in the waist.

The opponent hadn't expected the young girl to be so skilled; caught off guard, he let out an "Ouch!" and stumbled back two or three steps.

Tang Ye shouted, "Nice!"

The slender Du Xi kicked off her high heels, her brow radiating the heroic spirit of a dashing police officer.

Taking advantage of the moment Du Xi landed her kick, Tang Ye, like Li Yuanba lifting a cauldron, hoisted the heavy-duty bicycle high above his head and smashed it fiercely onto the human trafficker's skull.

"Clang!"

The trafficker was dazed and dizzy, collapsing to the ground in a heap, while the little girl lying on the ground was quickly scooped up by the surrounding crowd.

Tang Ye immediately swung the bicycle behind him.

Du Xi exclaimed in surprise; she hadn't expected that while Tang Ye looked refined and scholarly, his strength was immense, and he wielded the bicycle with such force it whistled through the air.

Although the few accomplices held weapons, they found themselves unable to find an opening against his impenetrable defense.

"The police will be here in a minute or two, none of you are getting away!" Tang Ye, worried they might swarm him, bluffed to intimidate them!

In terms of momentum, it looked as if Tang Ye and Du Xi were the ones surrounding the five people opposite them!

The lead trafficker was indeed losing his nerve, "Retreat quickly, the police are coming soon."

Seeing the situation turn against them, the others scattered and retreated toward the van.

"Want to leave? Not a chance!"

He couldn't stop everyone.

But he could fixate on one.

Tang Ye set down the bicycle and chased after the trafficker who had snatched the child.

As the trafficker's right foot stepped onto the pickup truck, Tang Ye leaned forward, bent his waist, and dragged him right back out.

Seeing police cars appearing in the distance, the accomplices dared not linger, quickly starting the vehicle and fleeing the scene.

The trafficker realized in despair that he had been abandoned and, forced to save himself, scrambled up and charged toward the shantytown on the right.

The shanties were built haphazardly, with colorful clothes hanging from laundry poles, and the sky was a mess of power lines and cables tangled like a spiderweb.

Riding the bicycle as if chasing a rabbit, Tang Ye pursued him for over ten minutes until the trafficker was as exhausted as a dog, leaning against a wall and panting heavily.

"Run, why aren't you running anymore?"

"Don't you come over here!"

The trafficker gripped his knife with both hands, his legs trembling.

Tang Ye saw through his outward bravado and inward cowardice, kicked down the bicycle's kickstand, and walked toward him with composure.

The trafficker mustered his courage, grabbed the knife, and charged at Tang Ye.

Tang Ye hated these traffickers to the core.

Because of them, countless families were torn apart.

He kicked the man in the abdomen, and the trafficker clutched his stomach and knelt before him.

"Big brother, please spare me."

"Spare you, so you can continue to commit evil and do wicked things?"

Tang Ye threw a punch at his chin without mercy, followed by a flying kick that struck him square in the face.

Blood spraying from his nose, the criminal stumbled back several steps, his back slamming heavily against the wall.

Tang Ye landed and turned around.

The sunset's afterglow spilled onto his right cheek, light and shadow interweaving, making his features appear sharp and defined.

Du Xi caught up, gasping for breath; seeing him bathed in golden light, her heart raced like a startled deer, and her mind buzzed for a moment.

The police arrived at the scene, and the mother, holding her recovered daughter, was bathed in tears.

When Tang Ye walked out of the alley and came to her side, she wiped her tears and choked out, "Thank you so much."

The surrounding crowd looked at Tang Ye with admiration; everyone had seen what just happened, and faced with a murderous criminal gang, most people felt fear and dared not meddle.

Tang Ye had done what many wanted to do but dared not.

"Hurry and take the child to the hospital!" Tang Ye checked the girl's pulse; it was normal, she had only been knocked out by sedatives.

The police learned the full story from Du Xi, and the Captain leading the team took the initiative to shake Tang Ye's hand, "Thank you for your hard work. Are you hurt?"

Tang Ye's jacket had bloodstains on it, left by the trafficker; he shook his head lightly and smiled, "Give the credit to Police Officer Du, I just lent a hand."

Du Xi looked at Tang Ye with complex emotions, finally realizing that the time they caught the thief at the garment factory was no coincidence.

At the time, she thought it was an exaggeration, but seeing it with her own eyes now, Tang Ye was a man of true character and responsibility.

As the crowd dispersed, her phone rang; Du Xi answered, and her mother complained on the other end, "Xi Xi, why did you reject him again? His father is an old classmate of your dad's, he's two years older than you, already a Section Chief, and very outstanding; you should try to get to know him."

Du Xi snuck a glance at Tang Ye and whispered, "Mom, I'm busy right now, I'll explain the reason to you later!"

Du Xi asked softly, "Are we still going to sing?"

Tang Ye smiled, "Of course we're singing! Before we sing, let's go eat together first!"

Du Xi sent a message to Liu Fang, "She said she wants to eat with us."

Tang Ye nodded, "I'll notify Huahua and have him come pay the bill."

Du Xi clapped happily, "That's a great idea!"

After first going to the Police Station to give a statement and parting ways with Du Xi, Tang Ye went home to take a shower, changed his clothes, and then arrived at the agreed-upon bone broth hotpot restaurant.

Du Xi had also changed her clothes, her hair tied into a ponytail, and she was looking at the menu with intense focus.

Tang Ye walked over with long, confident strides.

Du Xi reacted, smiled at Tang Ye, and handed him the menu, "I've ordered a few things, see what else you want to add!"

Tang Ye swept a glance over the table, "How come it's all vegetarian? Sun Hai is no herbivore."

Du Xi covered her mouth and laughed as she explained, "The point of bone broth hotpot is gnawing on the bones and sucking out the marrow."

No sooner had she finished speaking than Sun Hai and Liu Fang walked in one after the other.

Liu Fang put down her bag, a look of excitement on her face, "Du Xi, I heard you performed a meritorious deed this afternoon?"

Sun Hai looked at Liu Fang in surprise, his curiosity piqued, "What happened? What's the story?"

As she unwrapped the bowls and chopsticks, Liu Fang said with a smile, "This afternoon, Du Xi and Tang Ye were on a date when they happened to run into human traffickers snatching a child. Not only did they prevent a tragedy, but they also provided important clues for solving the case. This is a human trafficking ring that has been operating across many places in the country."

Du Xi's cheeks turned red instantly, "You misunderstood. We were not on a date."

Sun Hai glanced at Tang Ye and muttered, "So your blind date at noon was Du Xi!"

Tang Ye's skin was as thick as a City Wall, but he was worried Du Xi would feel awkward, so he quickly helped her out, "Du Xi and I just happened to be at the same cafe for blind dates at noon today, but we weren't on a date with each other."

Liu Fang winked at Du Xi with an ambiguous expression, "You two really have fate; you even ended up together while on blind dates. What's even more outrageous is that you caught human traffickers together—it's no less than the fate between Bai Niangzi and Xu Guanren. You must cherish it well!"

"What do you mean 'ended up together'?"

Du Xi's pretty eyes widened, and she pinched Liu Fang's arm, her gaze warning her not to continue.

Knowing that Du Xi was thin-skinned, Liu Fang did not continue to dwell on that topic.

After the four of them finished eating, they went to the KTV together; once Sun Hai entered, he hogged one of the microphones.

When Tang Ye sang "Xiu Hongqi," Du Xi held a tambourine in one hand and tapped out the rhythm with the other, looking at him with great interest like a young maiden.

She was right next to Du Xi.

A soft, almost imperceptible sensation came from her arm.

Tang Ye unleashed his voice, showing off all his strength without reservation.

Du Xi usually listened to pop songs and was resistant to revolutionary songs, but for some reason, she felt that Tang Ye sang with a special flavor.

Could this be what they call a preconceived notion? When you have a very good impression of someone, you subconsciously find reasons to give them a few extra points for any of their actions.

Back in high school, many people liked Xiao Hui, including Tang Ye.

Du Xi had heard quite a few evaluations of Tang Ye from Xiao Hui.

Such as that he was too short, dressed very unfashionably, and his family background was average...

Du Xi now felt that Xiao Hui's evaluations back then were too superficial.

Most importantly, while Tang Ye might seem to speak in an unreliable way, he was full of a sense of justice deep down.

As a Police officer, this core quality was incredibly lethal!
