Chapter 6: I
“Aaaaaaahhhhhhh————!!!!”
In Wu Xian’s… no, in everyone’s bewildered gazes, the unnamed fat boy suddenly screamed and bolted forward like a wild boar let loose from its cage, climbing down the stairs at a speed incongruous with his build.
Soon, he overtook Ma Gang and Li Xiaoyi ahead of him, sprinting to nearly shoulder-to-shoulder with Zheng Zha, nearly causing the future gorilla captain to stumble.
What the fuck! What the hell!
Watching this, Wu Xian’s heart churned with turbulent waves—if this were a 2D world, his forehead would surely be covered in a string of question marks.
This doesn’t make sense!
He had done nothing at all, simply following the plot step by step; the only difference was that he had been slightly gentler than Zhang Jie in the original.
But even so, it shouldn’t have mattered—why had this fat man, who was supposed to die here, suddenly exploded in power?
Could it be… that I didn’t cross over into Infinite Terror, but into a fanfiction world based on it, and this fat bastard is the real protagonist?
No way! What kind of author has such a twisted taste, picking a foul-mouthed dead fat guy instead of anyone else—do you even care about reader immersion?!
His lips twitched slightly; clearly, Wu Xian utterly rejected this absurd possibility.
At that moment, he seemed to recall something, releasing his invisible spiritual force to intensely “watch” the still-racing fat boy, his gaze gradually deepening with meaning.
Thus, after about two minutes, the entire group assembled at the bottom of the Hive, having already concluded the Death Stairs plot.
The mercenaries and Alice and other plot characters were fine, but the members of the Central Plains Team—except Wu Xian and Zhan Lan, whom he had cared for—now looked utterly drained, either bending over with hands on knees or sitting directly on the ground, gasping heavily.
Seeing this, Ma Xiu, though his expression was dark, did not press forward with his mercenaries either; instead, they halted and rested, conducting reconnaissance on the spot.
Interestingly, they seemed completely unaware that one person was missing—even the fat boy’s bloodstains had vanished without a trace, as if the middle-aged woman who had been erased had never appeared at all.
Zheng Zha and the others, sensing these changes, felt a chill crawl up their spines, their backs icy, their already pale faces turning even more ghastly.
As for Wu Xian, he now appeared calm and detached, following the mercenaries closely, his hand occasionally brushing against the walls as if searching for something.
Yet no one knew that while he appeared to be wandering aimlessly, his attention never left the unknown fat boy.
No signs of gene lock activation, no attempts to alter the plot.
Merely these two traits alone contradicted the characteristics of most fanfiction protagonists, and because of this, Wu Xian developed another, more plausible hypothesis about the fat boy’s origin.
Guide!
A Guide was an anthropomorphic entity designed by the Main God Space, similar to an NPC that issued quests.
They typically blended into the new recruits of a Lunhui team, their primary purpose being to identify candidates for the team leader and administer corresponding trials.
Once a candidate passed the trial, the Guide would immediately vanish, granting him the position and authority of team leader, along with special benefits such as upgrading his gene lock tier.
Thinking of this, Wu Xian gritted his teeth.
As previously mentioned, during “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Wu Xian, fearing he would repeat Zhang Jie’s tragedy and being attacked by Frendy during the fusion of leadership authority, had refused to become the Central Plains Team’s leader.
Since then, even after clearing two horror films, Wu Xian had never again encountered a similar Guide, leading him to suspect the Main God had abandoned him and chosen someone else to become the Central Plains Team’s leader.
Though Wu Xian had mentally prepared for this, now seeing Zheng Zha appear and the Main God immediately toss out a Guide, he still felt a twinge of irritation.
What the hell? You think I already gave up!
Laughable! I didn’t want it for my own reasons, but if you won’t offer it, that’s your fault!
Therefore, regardless of whether Zheng Zha’s saintly compassion made him utterly unsuitable as leader, just to prove a point, today he was taking this captain’s seat—no matter what!
…
Back to the matter at hand!
The plot continued: after resting, everyone advanced deeper into the Hive.
Along the way, they entered a vast hall filled with countless small shipping containers, each roughly several cubic meters in size, continuously emitting a chilling aura.
This bizarre scene stirred unease and suspicion among the mercenaries.
The Central Plains Team members, having seen the movie, knew these containers held Lickers far more terrifying than zombies; their tension mounted, yet due to the Main God’s orders, they dared not stray far from the mercenaries and could only grit their teeth and press on.
After passing through several more steel doors, the group reached the perimeter of the Central Computer Control Room.
As in the movie, the mercenaries would now attempt to open the door leading directly to the Central Computer, then use a device capable of shutting down Umbrella’s AI—the Red Queen—to disrupt it with a powerful electric current and reboot it.
Unfortunately, in the movie, this step was not easily achieved—the Red Queen had set a trap: stepping into the corridor beyond the door meant being sliced into pieces by countless lasers.
Thinking of this, Wu Xian glanced sidelong at Zheng Zha’s hesitant face, his lips curling slightly into a mocking smirk.
Predictably, just as the mercenaries were transporting the system shutdown device inside, Zheng Zha finally couldn’t hold back and shouted suddenly:
“W-wait! Don’t you find this strange? This AI is too useless—letting you reboot it so easily? I don’t think it’s that simple.”
The mercenaries halted. Zhan Lan sighed, stepping back silently—but instead of approaching the heroine Alice as in the original, she moved closer to Wu Xian.
Clearly, his help on the stairs had made her feel safer staying near this seasoned veteran.
Yet seeing Zheng Zha’s growing panic, Zhan Lan still felt pity and whispered softly to Wu Xian: “Mr. Wu, Zheng Zha…”
“I told you not to meddle. He ignored it himself—then I have no reason to treat him as anything special.”
Wu Xian cut her off calmly, his tone eerily serene, yet the coldness in it sent a shiver through Zhan Lan.
On the other side, hearing Zheng Zha’s well-intentioned warning, all the mercenaries stared at him strangely; Ma Xiu even stepped out of the corridor and approached him, his dark face filled with suspicion:
“You say that—have you regained your memories? Then tell me, what’s strange about this corridor?”
