Chapter 101: First Trial

~7 min read 1,304 words

"Hi!" Fujiwara Yuko nodded and smiled, saying, "Chen Sang really has a talent for language; just a couple of pointers and he'll understand the meaning."

Even a real Japanese person couldn't match his learning speed!

Although Fujiwara Yuko appeared happy on the surface, she didn't feel very comfortable inside.

Chen Yongren's Japanese is improving quickly; doesn't that mean they have fewer chances to meet?

Now they can only meet once a week; wouldn't that mean they'll only meet once a month in the future?

Fujiwara Chota kept nodding.

His Japanese is improving quickly; it seems Chen Yongren really wants to learn Japanese, and once he masters it, it might come in handy.

"If that's the case, Yuko must be a good teacher and let Chen Sang learn as quickly as possible." Fujiwara Chota said with a smile.

Fujiwara Yuko pressed her lips and nodded.

"Rina, you too." Fujiwara Chota looked at his wife and said, "Whatever you do, you must take it seriously; since you've chosen to learn, you must do it well!"

"I understand, Chota." Fujiwara Rina nodded slightly.

"Go on, I'm about to start work." Fujiwara Chota said no more, lowered his head, opened the document, and picked up a steel pen.

Seeing this, Fujiwara Rina's eyes showed a bit of disappointment; she sighed, got up, walked to the door, and slowly closed it.

"Rina." Just as the door was about to close, Fujiwara Chota suddenly lifted his head.

"Chota." Fujiwara Rina's eyes flashed with surprise; she was about to open the door and come in.

Seeing Rina's excited appearance, Fujiwara Chota couldn't help but shudder slightly, gave a light cough twice, and said, "Rina, you don't need to wait for me tonight."

You still have to study Chinese tomorrow, so rest early!

I still have a lot to handle; I might not be able to accompany you lately.

Upon hearing this, Fujiwara Rina's disappointment grew even more; I had thought...

It turns out you just want me not to come and disturb you.

This pastry, Fujiwara Rina didn't know how many times she had eaten it; helplessly she nodded and softly said, "I understand, Chota."

Immediately, she closed the door and went out.

Fujiwara Rina's eyes grew misty, and she felt deeply wronged inside.

Once or twice would be fine, but repeatedly...

From Yuko's birth to her gradual adulthood...

Fujiwara Rina inexplicably thought of tomorrow's lesson, needing to be alone with Chen Yongren, and she only felt an itch in her heart.

She glanced back at Fujiwara Chota's room.

She could faintly hear him answering the phone, seemingly angry again because of Amamiya Kazuhito's matter.

Fujiwara Rina sighed helplessly and returned to the bedroom.

The next morning.

Chen Yongren, as usual, changed into his deputy sheriff's uniform and headed to the police station.

Today's weather seemed colder than usual, but fortunately the overcoat issued by the police station helped ward off much of the cold wind.

While walking down the street, Chen Yongren bought a few more three-gun platforms, then hummed a little tune and continued toward the police station.

"... reach out and touch sister's forehead, the heavenly court full and enticing."

"... reach out and touch sister's little nose, the fragrant smoke drifts outward to the hermitage."

"... reach out and touch sister's little mouth, baby-like eyes smile faintly."

When there was still some distance to the police station, an inner voice could be heard.

"I always feel something is off today; what are we going to do at the execution ground?"

"It's really being beholden to others' food and money; today it's probably not easy to get away with tricks."

"The chief has come; today probably nothing good will happen."

The chief also came?

With Liu Jianming present, isn't this chief just a mascot?

What is he here for?

Chen Yongren hurried into the police station and saw the officers quietly discussing something.

"Sheriff Chen!"

Seeing Chen Yongren enter, the police officers all greeted him.

Liu Jianming wasn't there, so the title dropped the 'deputy'.

Each one is a sharp person.

"What are you shouting about? I'm the deputy sheriff." Chen Yongren laughed and scolded, took out the few three-gun platforms he had just bought from his pocket, threw them on the table, and said, "Divide them among the brothers!"

"Thanks, Sheriff Chen!"

The police officers gathered around the table, happily dividing the cigarettes.

"Save me a pack!" Zhang Haifeng, quick-eyed and quick-handed, swiftly snatched a pack of cigarettes from an officer's hand, tore it open, tucked a cigarette behind his ear, sauntered over to Chen Yongren's side, glanced at the second floor, and said softly:

"Liu Jianming said he would take us to the execution ground."

"Execution ground?" Chen Yongren frowned.

"Yeah." Zhang Haifeng nodded: "I asked him what we were going there for, he didn't say, just told us to wait."

Chen Yongren looked at Liu Jianming's seat; he wasn't there.

"Liu Jianming went to the chief's office." Zhang Haifeng explained.

"Chief?" Although he knew he had come to the police station, Chen Yongren still feigned puzzlement.

"Chief just came back..." Seeing Chen Yongren's puzzled expression, Zhang Haifeng explained.

As he was speaking, he heard a shout from nearby.

"Quiet down, everyone, don't make noise."

Following the sound, he saw Liu Jianming smiling as he came down from the second floor.

Chen Yongren immediately focused his observation on him.

"Today's probe might uncover something."

"His luck is really good; there just happens to be a batch of death-row inmates to handle."

"Chen Yongren, when you're arresting people, you work so hard, but I don't know if you dare to shoot them!"

……

Hearing Liu Jianming's inner thoughts, Chen Yongren immediately realized what he intended to do.

Chen Yongren used fake Chinese agents to test the reactions of the policemen inside the police station.

"A Ren, you've come just in time!" Liu Jianming locked his gaze on Chen Yongren and smiled: "There are a few Chinese agents inside the prison who are to be executed."

I begged the bureau chief for half a day before he agreed to hand over these prisoners for me to execute.

Damn, as expected, Chen Yongren cursed silently.

If I, this young master, don't know what you're thinking, I might really be fooled by you.

You think you can fool me with just a few death-row prisoners?

At least get a few Japanese agents so I can earn more rewards.

Chen Yongren felt contempt.

"No problem, I hate those who ruin Songhu's public order the most." Chen Yongren showed impatience: "That bastard we caught earlier—if it weren't for Director Fujii's order, I would have already flayed him!"

These words came straight from Chen Yongren's heart.

When facing a Japanese dog of an agent, one should hate him so much as to want to eat his flesh, drink his blood, pull out his tendons, and crush his bones to ashes.

Hearing this, Liu Jianming's eyelids twitched twice, he patted Chen Yongren's shoulder, and laughed: "Then today you have this opportunity."

After a pause, Liu Jianming asked again: "A Ren, why do you hate those anti-Japanese elements so much?"

"I just want to live my own small life; I don't want my peaceful days disturbed—now that it's come to this, what can I do?" Chen Yongren said recklessly.

In places controlled by the Japanese, one naturally cannot reveal hatred toward the Japanese; otherwise, wouldn't that be seeking death?

"Exactly!" Liu Jianming seemed pleased with Chen Yongren's answer, smiling: "Pointless sacrifice is just foolishness; moreover, Director Fujii has been good to us—who would go resist the Japanese for no reason?"

He says that with his mouth, but his heart is not.

"He's quite good at speaking."

"I'm just afraid he'll find a chance later and not shoot."

"Chen Yongren, in the whole police station, you're the biggest problem!"
