Chapter 16: The Resurrector
Monks don't tell lies; if they say they will eradicate evil, they will surely do so.
Doctor Jieke and the hostage led the way ahead, Tang Luo walked behind, and the three went to the hospital's underground laboratory.
Xiao Chu and Zhou Zhen Guo left first.
They simply don't have the heart to be good people and eradicate evil.
They only sigh in their hearts that the master truly is a master—his methods are thunderous, his heart that of a bodhisattva; he is a good person.
Tang Luo also had no intention of letting them follow.
Although they encounter danger, rescuing them in this direct manner will likewise bring merit to Tang Luo.
But Tang Luo's conduct isn't yet so shameful as to reach this point.
Moreover, forcing others into danger and then rescuing them does not accumulate any merit.
If that were acceptable.
Tang Luo sets up a boundless-merit life-release device; just lying beside it lets him accumulate merit.
Merit has its own 'temperament'.
Accumulating merit isn't difficult, but cheating and cutting corners won't do.
Open a hidden door.
Before the three of them appears a downward-spiraling staircase, with walls on both sides.
The walls also have a few oil lamps hanging, allowing one to see.
"How many people are inside?"
Tang Luo asked casually.
"Ah?"
The limping Doctor Jieke, after a moment of daze, said, "Nobody."
"Such an important experimental site, and you tell me there's nobody?" Tang Luo said.
"Really, nobody!"
Doctor Jieke, fearing that this self-proclaimed detective madman would subject him to another "death roulette," quickly said, "All that's here are the experimental subjects."
Tang Luo looked at the other one.
"I've only come once before, and there were plenty of people then."
"We don't need to conduct experiments today—what do we need people for! Just having someone guard this sole entrance is enough! You were just an assistant last time you came! Idiot!"
Doctor Jieke roared.
Looking at his ferocious appearance, if Tang Luo weren't present...
... he would probably have strangled this bespectacled doctor to death.
"Let's keep moving, no delays." Tang Luo couldn't be bothered to watch them fight like dogs.
The three descended again.
After walking for a minute, another door appeared ahead; Jieke opened it with a key.
Inside is a five-meter-long passage, with another door at the far end, and a faint smell of blood drifts in.
"There's a mechanism; you must lock the rear door before you can open the front one." Jieke said, standing before the second door.
Tang Luo locked the door behind him.
A "click-clack" sound rang out.
Probably some mechanism had been triggered.
Doctor Jieke opened the thick, heavy wooden door before him.
A pungent, nauseating smell burst forth, as if opening a slaughterhouse.
"Ugh!"
The bespectacled man immediately retched.
Under normal circumstances, one would certainly wear a mask, which would somewhat weaken the odor.
Moreover, the smell wasn't this strong last time.
Jieke, however, remained expressionless, walked in, and turned on the lights.
This is a fairly spacious underground area.
It is about five meters high, with an area exceeding 300 square meters.
There are more than ten, just enough for an adult to lie down on, like narrow surgical stone beds.
They are stained with blood, and a few have white cloths soaked in fresh blood covering them.
Under the white cloths are the "experimental materials."
The ground beside the stone tables is a series of concealed drainage channels.
Part of the odor emanates from here.
Besides the stone tables, there are various kinds of mechanical medical equipment that look extremely terrifying.
Exposed wires make everything look extremely rough.
It looks more like an interrogation room, a place for torture.
As Tang Luo and the others pushed the door open and entered.
Several cries rang out.
Then, as if in response, hoarse shouts arose, rising and falling.
On one wall of the room, narrow, coffin-shaped cavities have been dug out.
They are locked with iron bars, forming small cells.
Used to detain the experimental subjects.
Several of the cells were apparently dug too close together, joining into one, forming a large cell.
The lights in the experimental area aren't particularly bright either.
The light can only reach the front part of the cells; deeper inside it's pitch black.
Some shadows swayed, as if stimulated by the light.
On the wall opposite the cells, there are also several doors.
Inside are offices for researchers like Jie Ke.
They store a lot of data.
They also include data on part of the organization's members.
They are mostly mid- to low-level personnel.
As for the organization's behind-the-scenes founders, those nobles and officials, they would not leave such obvious clues and handles.
However, Doctor Jie Ke is an extremely important researcher.
You can fool others, but you can't fool him.
Tang Luo has already memorized those people's identities; picking a suitable time, he can eliminate them.
"Go get the data?"
Jie Ke hobbled toward the closed door.
Tang Luo followed at a leisurely pace.
The glasses-wearing man stood at the doorway, his face grim to the extreme.
He wanted to flee but didn't dare.
That foreign detective acts without any scruples; he's basically a lunatic, a monster.
If he doesn't flee, when he falls into Ge Lan Field's hands he should still be able to survive—after all, he's just a pawn.
But if he flees, he likely won't even keep his life.
Unlike Jie Ke, the glasses-wearing man personally witnessed the terrible carnage Tang Luo caused by overturning the table.
Crushing him would be as easy as squeezing a chick.
Using a key to open one of the doors, Jie Ke walked toward the cabinet inside the room: "The data are all inside."
"Take them out." Tang Luo said.
Jie Ke said nothing more, opened the cabinet, and took out a stack of documents and a bottle of liquid.
"Can I stop the bleeding first?"
Placing the documents on the table, Jie Ke said.
The wound on his leg is not small, and the blood hasn't stopped.
Although the bleeding isn't heavy, it adds up, and Jie Ke's face is already pallid, making it hard for him to stand.
Now he relies entirely on the cabinet to keep from falling over.
"Whatever."
Tang Luo gave no reply, picked up the documents on the table, and began to examine them.
Speaking of which, the core members who truly know the organization's purpose and what it's doing are few in number.
All told, just over twenty.
But those who only half-understand, or merely know they serve some powerful force, are not few.
Tang Luo also saw a gang called the Crow Gang, which had kidnapped some people for the organization.
They can barely be considered peripheral members.
Like the glasses-wearing man, and Huo Qi, who can become researchers.
They will first be recruited, then gradually exposed to the truth, becoming core personnel.
Huo Qi: "Died before completing his training."
The glasses-wearing man, meanwhile, had just "entered the profession," and the whole "industry" was destroyed as a result.
It's all Tang Luo's doing!
"Beep beep beep!"
Just as Tang Luo was examining the documents, a sound similar to an alarm suddenly rang out.
"Bang!"
Jie Ke collided with the cabinet, his face showing both surprise and pain.
He couldn't hold the medicine bottle steady; not knowing its ingredients, the pungent liquid spilled all over him.
He was in a sorry state to the extreme.
"What sound?"
Tang Luo continued looking at the documents, too lazy to lift his head.
"The cell doors have been opened." Jie Ke snapped, "Scott that idiot, the patients are highly aggressive!"
"Oh." Tang Luo replied casually, gathering the documents, "Are these all the documents?"
"If it's only member data." Jie Ke did not conceal.
All the member data that have been compiled into documents are here.
Another room also contains a large amount of data related to immortality research.
"Then let's go." Tang Luo only needs the member data.
"Ah!"
From the half-open door came Scott's miserable, anguished cry.
It was also mixed with the howls of the mentally ill.
Obviously, they had been attacked.
"I'm not going out!"
Jake's face changed drastically, and the steps he had just sold shrank back.
Then, Tang Luo grabbed him, opened the door, and threw him out like a doll.
Jake, fallen to the ground, let out a muffled groan, struggling to lean against the nearby stone platform wall.
Scott's cries grew weak, and the madman's howls likewise weakened.
Meanwhile, another kind of sound began to grow loud.
Listening closely, it sounded like some kind of chewing and swallowing.
"What is this?"
Tang Luo asked.
Inside the underground lab, a twisted monster had appeared.
It looked like a person, but much larger, about three meters tall.
Its lower limbs were as thick as elephant legs, its arms slender, its palms extraordinarily large, its five fingers like the appendages of an arthropod.
It could easily grab an adult and lift them—indeed, it was doing just that.
Scott's mutilated corpse was clutched in the monster's hand, held aloft.
Maintaining a humanoid shape, its sparsely haired head was buried in Scott's remains.
As if eating kebabs.
With the sound of swallowing.
Its deathly gray huge belly undulated like a wave.
In stark contrast to its huge belly, its withered chest bore a bloody hole.
Yellow oily substance and dark blood flowed from it, emitting a foul odor.
It could be seen.
That blood hole, as the monster ate,
was healing at a visible speed.
The oily substance secreted profusely, blood diminished, and the small wound was soon sealed.
Beside the monster lay several mutilated corpses.
"This is... our interim product." Jake laughed, his expression twisted, "We call it the 'Resurrector'; I awakened it."
The monster called the Resurrector was surely locked in that large cell, sleeping.
Not only was it awakened, it was also released.
Unrelated to Scott, the one who released it was Jake.
Inside the cabinet just now, there was also a special switch.
Once activated, it could open all the cells and, incidentally, awaken the Resurrector with intense pain.
"Resurrector? Does it resurrect the dead?" Tang Luo asked.
"Yes, the next stage is the Immortal. I'm already close to success!" Jake's face suddenly turned ferocious, "But you've ruined everything!"
"Is this why you want to drag me down with you?"
Tang Luo's expression didn't change at all; the monster ten meters away seemed to have no effect on him.
Such calmness annoyed Jake.
Everything he had, all his effort, destroyed by the person before him—why?!
Why does this person treat it like a trivial little thing?!
Why does this person act as if it's nothing, completely indifferent!
Even if the other side just laughed arrogantly, it would make Jake feel better than this.
"Mutual destruction?" Jake sneered, pointing at his clothes, "No, it will only eat you."
The Resurrector is uncontrollable.
But as its creator, Jake still has a means of self-preservation.
For example, a special odor that the Resurrector dislikes and wants to stay away from.
Now Jake's body is filled with this odor.
