Chapter 2148: Early retirement

Li Yalin was now manipulated by a gambler's mentality, swearing to seize this opportunity to take a gamble.

Therefore, hearing that the chief wanted him to withdraw his men, he immediately retorted angrily, "If we withdraw the men now, all our previous efforts will be completely wasted!"

The chief asked back, "Haven't you already searched it thoroughly? How long do you want to keep searching? Even if I give you a month to tear down the Fei Group headquarters building bit by bit, you won't be able to find the person!"

Li Yalin blurted out, "Chief, let the special operations team search again. I think it's impossible for her to have escaped. Maybe she is hiding in some corner of the Fei Group!"

The chief said angrily, "Li, I know you're not convinced because you encountered such a case just before retirement. But let me tell you, this matter has already triggered huge dissatisfaction among the media and the public. Now the internet is full of scolding for the New York police, and the mayor has received countless calls blaming us!"

Li Yalin hurriedly said, "That's why we must catch Su Ruoli and find a way to force the truth out of her about the Cataclysmic Front's involvement in this matter!"

The chief scolded, "Is your brain flooded? Regardless of whether those people were killed by the Cataclysmic Front or not, I'll tell you one thing: now the public in the whole United States and even the whole world is applauding the deaths of these people, and they all regard the mastermind behind the scenes as a hero. Even the mayor has demanded that we stop the investigation. Do you still want to defy the mayor's orders?!"

Li Yalin was immediately rendered speechless.

He was silent for a moment and asked, "Chief, it's fine to call off the team now, but what happens after that? Is this matter never to be investigated again?"

The chief waved his hand and said, "You don't need to worry about this matter. You have less than a year until retirement. Hand over your work tomorrow, and during this time before retirement, just rest at home with peace of mind. When you retire, I will hold a grand farewell ceremony for you so you can retire honorably."

Upon hearing this, Li Yalin became anxious and immediately said angrily, "Are you trying to make me get out now?!"

The chief said word for word, "No, I just want you to take a rest and leave the remaining work to others."

As he spoke, the chief persuaded patiently, "Li, you have dedicated so many years to the police force. Just treat it as leaving more opportunities for young people before you retire. As for yourself, just go and have a good rest."

"Impossible!" Li Yalin said coldly, "I cannot retire early without solving this case! I cannot allow my many years of police career to end with such a shameful case!"

Having said this, Li Yalin threatened, "Chief, if you want to take this case away from me, then I will go to the mayor to complain about you!"

"Complain about me?" The chief gave a bitter smile and then said helplessly, "Li, let me be clear with you. In next year's mayoral election, the current mayor is seeking re-election. This case has already brought great negative impact on his re-election. If we trigger public anger now, his hope for re-election will be completely ruined! So, it's not that I want you to retire early; it's the mayor who wants you to retire early!"

Once these words were out, Li Yalin was stunned.

He really didn't expect that the mayor, who had repeatedly praised him in public, would actually want him to retire early.

Seeing that he couldn't speak, the chief added, "Li, there are only two choices in front of you now. The first is that you voluntarily apply for early retirement. Although this case will cause you to lose some face, at least it won't ruin your reputation. It's just a stain, nothing more. Didn't your Chinese ancestors often say that no one is perfect? Having such a stain won't have much impact on you. Besides, as the New York Police Chief, this case will also leave an indelible stain on my resume, and I can face it calmly. What do you have to hesitate about?"

Speaking of this, the chief cleared his throat and added, "Ahem... Li, if you are unwilling, then the New York Police Department can only publicly announce the suspension of your work. As for the reason for suspending your work, it is also based on the fact that you bear an unshirkable responsibility in multiple links of this series of cases, including but not limited to the fact that you failed to discover the criminal facts of Fei Haoyang and others for such a long time, and that you failed to catch the murderer in the kidnapping case of Fei Haoyang until he was killed!"

Li Yalin's veins bulged, and anger rose from his heart.

But the chief said earnestly, "Li, when a big thing happens that can't be solved, someone has to come out to take the blame. You have worked in the New York Police Department for so many years; you can't not understand this principle. I don't want you to take the blame, but if you are really stubborn, then I can only apologize to you in advance!"

Li Yalin looked at the other party through gritted teeth. Even though his hatred was sky-high, he knew that what the chief said was the truth.

In fact, most of the time, the New York police system is very protective of its own. When their own people cause trouble, the higher-ups will try to solve it out of consideration for the overall image.

However, the New York police cannot handle everything.

Over the years, the New York police's violent law enforcement against ethnic minorities has triggered huge public anger several times. At first, the New York police also tried to cover up their own people, but in the end, they had to make sacrifices because the public anger was too great. ===== CHAPTER 2149 =====
