Chapter 65: Stepping out of the newbie village
"Keep up, okay?"
Zhang Su was observing the Highlander following behind through the rearview mirror when he discovered that there was actually another car behind the Highlander. Based on the shape of the headlights, he could tell it was an Audi Q5.
"Damn it, I've been played too!"
The Audi Q5 was quite clever. It hadn't reacted when the X35 left, clearly guessing that there was another group behind that phone. Sure enough, it had waited for them!
He had no time to worry about the situation behind him. Stray zombies were still rushing toward the minivan from both sides. Zhang Su maneuvered the minivan in a clumsy fashion to avoid them; he didn't dare to ram the zombies lunging at the car, fearing the aging minivan couldn't take the impact.
"Damn it, once I get the chance to drive an armored vehicle, I'll crush you all!"
While dodging the lunging zombies, Zhang Su thought to himself, feeling stifled.
Soon, the minivan reached the bottom of the exit ramp. However, the scene on the ramp made Zhang Su's hair stand on end!
More than a dozen or twenty zombies were scattered across the ramp, which was about forty or fifty meters long. It wouldn't have been impossible to drive around them—it was only slightly harder than the driving test.
But zombies move, and they don't run slowly!
Hearing the engine approaching, some zombies near the bottom of the ramp were already lunging toward the minivan, their fearless demeanor truly moving.
"Damn it, do or die!"
Zhang Su's eyes were filled with madness. Dawn was right before his eyes; he didn't believe he would fall before the sunrise. He slammed his foot down, almost driving the gas pedal into the engine compartment.
*Vroom!! *
The engine let out a defiant cry, the tachometer needle hitting the red line at over six thousand RPM. The minivan unleashed the most ferocious power of its life.
*Bang, bang-bang. *
Ramming through the three closest zombies, Zhang Su slightly adjusted the steering, drilling into the gap. The speed he had built up gave him infinite possibilities, and he carved a path through the swarm of corpses!
"Charge! Go, give me power!"
Zhang Su didn't dare lift his foot at all. The minivan flew out of the underground parking lot, soaring high at the final step, driving with the intensity of a rally race!
In just a second or two, the minivan slammed back onto the ground. Its landing was slightly clumsy, swaying from side to side, but it ultimately remained stable and didn't flip!
"Ha, yeah-hoo!"
When the street scene came into view, Zhang Su couldn't help but let out a cheer. He had finally left the damn darkness behind.
He knew this was only the first step of a difficult journey, so after the cheer, he immediately focused his attention.
A quick glance showed that the situation on the street south of the residential complex was better than he had imagined. It wasn't as tragic as the street where the explosion had occurred on the west side, nor had it experienced the intense firefight between SWAT and zombies on the east side.
However, there were still more than a dozen cars lying helter-skelter on the street. The breakfast cart across the road was stained red with blood, and half a corpse was hanging in the display window. It seemed someone had tried to hide in the breakfast cart to escape the zombies, but unfortunately, they hadn't succeeded.
The street was covered in scattered debris, some of which affected driving, but as long as the road wasn't blocked, he would keep driving even if the tires were gone and only the rims remained!
According to the original plan, Zhang Su turned right onto the street, discovering that the zombies ahead were significantly denser than those behind. He figured the car that had left the complex earlier must have gone in the opposite direction.
Although there were quite a few zombies, the main road was far easier to drive on than the underground parking lot. There was plenty of space to dodge, so they weren't a problem.
Just as Zhang Su turned onto the main road, he saw the Highlander driving out of the underground parking lot from the side, with a zombie dancing on its windshield...
With a jolt, the zombie on the hood was shaken off and fell to the side of the road.
"It's fine..."
Zhang Su had just let out a sigh of relief when he saw that black Audi Q5 following closely behind the Highlander out of the parking lot!
"Better not follow me, damn, you..."
Zhang Su muttered, watching the Q5 follow the Highlander in a right turn without hesitation. The intention couldn't be more obvious.
"Bad!"
A moment of distraction almost caused Zhang Su to hit a tilted car ahead. He stopped being distracted and focused on being the lead car.
The street was no longer the familiar sight it once was; scenes from apocalyptic movies were now reality. The wandering zombies weren't dense, but there were still quite a few, distributed at street corners, in green belts, on sidewalks, and inside shops along the street.
He lowered the window slightly, and the cold wind blew into the cabin with a strange odor.
"It's the apocalypse, it's really the apocalypse."
When trapped in the residential complex, he hadn't had such an intuitive feeling, but only when immersed in it could he feel the desolation of the apocalypse.
After a short while, Zhang Su's minivan turned onto Qingbin Road, where the gas station was located.
Qingbin Road was a relatively busy street in Qincheng. At this moment, the road conditions were much worse than the street in front of Shengqin Garden. Some cars lying across the middle of the road almost blocked it completely, and zombies of various forms wandered through the accident scene, which was extremely tragic.
Just at this moment, a crisp voice rang out.
"Help, save me!"
Zhang Su turned his head to look. In the lane adjacent to the intersection, a woman was sticking her upper body out of the sunroof, waving her arms vigorously toward him.
"No way..."
Zhang Su didn't hesitate to rush into the non-motorized lane, driving with the right side of the car on the curb, the vehicle tilted as it sped forward. He had no intention of stopping to save anyone.
He was currently relying purely on high-speed driving to shake off the zombie pursuit. If he stopped to save someone, there would only be one outcome: being surrounded!
"I hope that Zhong Xiaoshan doesn't get a sudden fit of saintly compassion!"
Zhang Su was just pondering this when the shadow of the Highlander appeared in his rearview mirror. Its speed was no slower than his, and the zombies couldn't even touch a hair of the car before losing their target.
From the posture of the car, he could tell that Zhong Xiaoshan had turned without the slightest hesitation, which was enough to prove she wasn't a pushover.
"Decisive enough, good!"
Zhang Su was wrong; Zhong Xiaoshan and the others hadn't even noticed anyone calling for help. Zheng Xinyu's face was pale, her eyes tightly closed, and Wang Guangjun in the back seat had a sallow complexion, his eyes also tightly closed.
*Whoosh, whoosh. *
Following closely behind the minivan, the Highlander and the Q5 did the same, tilting their bodies and speeding wildly.
After leaving the complex, Zhong Xiaoshan completely let go. She didn't slow down or change lanes. If a zombie rushed at her, she would just ram straight into it. Doing this might cause some damage to the car, but at least it wouldn't lead to an irrecoverable accident like a rollover.
She stared fixedly at the rear of the minivan, her eyeballs bloodshot from the intensity. Never mind others calling for help; even if the building next to them collapsed, she wouldn't even glance at it!
The driver of the Audi Q5 also had very seasoned skills, looking as if they could overtake the Highlander at any moment.
The three cars sped through the zombie-filled street. With the added obstruction of wrecked cars and green belts, many zombies couldn't chase for more than a few steps before stopping and returning to that dazed state.
Soon, Zhang Su's eyes narrowed as he looked ahead; the gas station sign appeared in the distance!
He had researched some interesting things, like when your nose is blocked, lying on the side that isn't blocked will soon clear it, and the other side won't necessarily block up. Never cough when peeing... Also, if your throat is too itchy and you really don't want to cough, you can try hitting a high note; it can scratch the itch in your throat~
