Chapter 66: I'll give you two choices

~7 min read 1,334 words

"There are zombies!"

As his perspective widened, Zhang Su saw seven or eight zombies wandering aimlessly inside the gas station. A few zombies closer to the road had already noticed his minivan, and the situation inside the convenience store was unclear.

*Thump! *

Without the slightest pause, Zhang Su adjusted his steering to avoid the lunging zombies, then accelerated and charged into the gas station like a tiger entering a flock of sheep. He kept adjusting his direction, using the side corner of his bumper to ram the zombies inside!

*Thump, thump, thump... *

Even with the tricky angles, the minivan's bumper was too fragile. Before long, it completely shattered and fell off, while the zombies inside the gas station were basically knocked to the ground, rolling around.

The screech of tires braking rang out.

The Highlander drove into the parking lot, and the Q5 behind it followed closely.

Seeing the two cars stop, Zhang Su sighed. If the Highlander and the Q5 were a bit sharper and just drove over the struggling zombies on the ground, they could save a lot of effort.

He wanted to open the window and shout, but the Highlander's doors were already open. Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan jumped out with weapons and went to work on the zombies on the ground. Only Wang Guangjun, because of the two seatbelts, was a beat slower.

Unable to keep driving, Zhang Su slammed the minivan to a stop, grabbed his weapon, and jumped out as well. He glanced into the distance; the nearest zombies were over thirty meters away, so it wouldn't be easy to lure them over. He stepped forward and walked quickly toward the Q5 from the side.

"You guys deal with the zombies, remember to just drive over them next time!"

Zhang Su said to Zheng Xinyu and the others, then rushed to the Q5 and kicked the door. He crooked his finger at the man and woman in the front row—the meaning was clear: get out of the car!

"B-big... big brother, we have no m-malice, no malice..."

The driver's side door opened, and a man of about twenty-four or twenty-five stepped out, followed by a woman of the same age from the passenger side.

Zhang Su gripped his short hatchet tightly and looked at the man and woman carefully. Their thin clothes were dirty and wrinkled, and "unkempt" was an understatement. He sniffed the air, and a wave of urine-like stench wafted from the car.

If he wasn't mistaken, these two must have been trapped in the car since the zombie outbreak began. He couldn't imagine what kind of week they had spent inside...

"There's no one else, big brother, just me—just me and my girlfriend in the car!"

The man was handsome and wore glasses. Seeing Zhang Su frowning and looking at the back seat, he knew what he was looking for and answered hurriedly, his eyes darting toward the others dealing with the zombies, his lips trembling and his face twitching wildly.

Zhang Su glanced at Zheng Xinyu and the others. The zombies knocked over posed no threat, and the group had already finished off most of them, leaving only two dragging their half-broken bodies and crawling with difficulty—they weren't long for this world.

"Everyone get down, don't try anything funny. Tell me, why were you following us?"

Zhang Su raised his hatchet at the woman, scaring her into hurriedly crouching down beside the man, her face full of terror.

The two crouched by the car wheels. The man looked up at Zhang Su, his face mournful. "Big brother, I... I'm fleeing for my life, following you to flee for my life..."

"You're quite the thinker, aren't you? Following me to flee for your life? Damn it, look at how my minivan is smashed up, and look at my companion's car. You're pretty comfortable with yourself, aren't you?"

Zhang Su hated two types of people: those who took advantage of him, and those who didn't let him take advantage of them...

This crouching couple was both!

"I... I, big brother, I know I was wrong, please don't be angry. We're all neighbors—no, we're all human. Let's talk this out. Whatever you need, I'll do it without hesitation."

The man clasped his hands together and shook them repeatedly, his face full of sincerity. The woman beside him nodded in agreement.

"You'll do it without hesitation, right?" Zhang Su nodded and pointed at the zombies on the street outside the parking lot. "Go clean up the outside."

"Ah?"

Upon hearing this, the man's legs went weak. If he hadn't been leaning against the front of the car, he would have collapsed to the ground. He waved his hands repeatedly. "No, no, big brother, those things are too scary. You get infected just by touching them. No, no."

Zheng Xinyu looked at the cowardly man and curled her lip. "Infected just by touching? What, is it airborne too? Talking nonsense!"

"It's true! My girlfriend and I saw it with our own eyes."

The man's eyes widened as he defended himself. "The morning the zombie virus broke out, my girlfriend and I were in the underground parking lot. We saw someone get scratched, and they turned within five minutes. Such a powerful virus!"

Zhang Su and the others exchanged glances. They had previously guessed that being scratched would also lead to infection, and hearing someone who had seen it with their own eyes confirmed their suspicions. They just hadn't expected the transformation to be so fast, though this man's words remained to be verified.

"I don't have the patience to mess around with you two. I'll give you two choices: either kill those five zombies over there and then take your car and get lost, or you can leave now, but the car stays!"

Zhang Su said unceremoniously.

"This... you're robbing us, you're killing us! How can you do this? Aren't you afraid of being held accountable by the law later?"

The man said with a mournful face.

"You still know how to talk about the law? Do you know how the law came to be? Civilization comes first, and then the judicial system is gradually established. Now that human civilization has collapsed, you're talking to me about the law? Is your brain broken?"

Zhang Su looked at the man, speechless. He had been able to adjust his mindset on the first day mainly because of the messages in Zheng Xinyu's WeChat group.

A disaster had broken out worldwide, and various systems were falling apart, so survival had become the top priority.

"Human civilization has collapsed?"

The man and woman looked at each other, their eyes filled with disbelief. Clearly, they had no idea how serious the situation outside really was.

"Big brother, do you know something? How large is the scope of this disaster? Has the entire Qincheng been affected, or is it Hebei Province..."

"Why are you talking so much? Who cares about Qincheng or Hebei? Choose quickly, or you won't even be able to walk out of the gas station!"

Zhang Su rotated his wrist; the hatchet, covered in stains, was quite intimidating.

"This... Uncle, Uncle, save us. We're hungry and thirsty. Never mind killing zombies, we can barely run a few steps. How about... how about you give us some food first? Once we have the strength, we'll go kill the zombies. Please, I beg you."

Seeing Zhang Su's fierce look, the man hurriedly turned to look at the middle-aged man behind him who looked much kinder.

Wang Guangjun saw the two crouching on the ground looking pitiful and felt a bit of sympathy, but he knew his place. He hurriedly turned his head to look at Zhang Su. "I'm the same as you, I also escaped following this brother. I can't make the decisions!"

The man's heart sank. He had thought this uncle was an elder of the group, but he hadn't expected this kind of relationship.
