Chapter 36: Avengers List—First Draft

S. H. I. E. L. D. Headquarters, Nick Fury put down the phone in his hand. He hadn't been disturbed by Frank, because he truly hadn't slept.

Mutant goat horn... what exactly is its use...

Nick Fury thought about Frank's attitude on the phone and shifted his attention to this material that had been thrown in the warehouse for years with no one wanting it.

Nick Fury knew the goat horn wasn't for Frank. After Frank became the Saint Light Practitioner, S. H. I. E. L. D. immediately overturned the Punisher file that had been established, combed through the information from the beginning, and established a new file.

In this process, Nick Fury discovered a very important person, and that was Johnson.

According to Hawkeye, Johnson seemed to have dealt with Frank before, and there was a basis of mutual trust between the two sides. Moreover, many times, the two didn't know what they were hiding and chatting about, and didn't let outsiders intervene.

Added to the point that Johnson had appeared at Peter Parker's house, Nick Fury determined that this Johnson was also not an ordinary person.

It's just, there was one point he couldn't quite figure out: how did this person hide so deeply? No one had ever discovered Johnson's specialness before. Could it be that he was a mutant like Bruce Banner?

Thinking of this possibility, Nick Fury pulled out a handwritten file from the side. This was the scheduled candidate for the Avengers. The first page of the file was the preliminary list.

The fountain pen hung over the paper for a long time; Johnson's name was ultimately not added by Nick Fury.

Relative to the others on this paper, the information Johnson displayed was too little, and the person himself was too mysterious; it didn't quite fit the requirements for selecting people.

Eh...

Nick Fury suddenly sighed. The others on this paper were also not easy to handle. The relatively easy ones to solve were just the two agents, Black Widow and Hawkeye.

But the matter of Woody escaping death from S. H. I. E. L. D. made Nick Fury have a bit of suspicion toward Hawkeye. He wasn't sure if everything he had always seen was performed by others.

As for the other candidates, Tony Stark was an arrogant person. Without a special opportunity, the difficulty of gaining his trust and cooperation could be imagined.

Thinking of this, Nick Fury more firmly determined the idea of holding tighter to the things Tony Stark's father, Howard, entrusted them to give to Tony.

Only when Tony faced a real life-and-death crisis could taking that thing out have the best effect.

As for the off-chance that Tony Stark didn't have enough time to crack the secrets within the relic at that time, Nick Fury could only say that was Tony's fate not being good enough; he would cross the name off the list at that time.

However, with Howard's precedent, Nick Fury felt that Tony Stark would likely succeed at that time. After all, that was Howard's son, another super genius.

Of course, that plan had a premise: Tony Stark couldn't die at someone else's hands before they made a move. This was also the reason Nick Fury found Blade.

One was naturally to protect Tony Stark's safety, and the other was to let Blade and Tony Stark get to know each other in advance, because in Nick Fury's arrangement, these two people were to become teammates in the future.

However... how did Blade suddenly become so strong? Another genetic mutation? Why were things on Earth becoming increasingly bizarre and difficult to understand during this period? Or did these things exist originally, and were just concentratedly erupting?

Nick Fury thought about it and pasted a photo onto Blade's brief file. Blade was certainly not as difficult to deal with as Tony Stark here for Nick Fury.

Nick Fury had already had people monitor and protect Ms. Forger 24 hours a day. Although he hadn't found the connection between Ms. Forger and Blade, it was very clear that Blade cared about this woman.

People with weaknesses are much easier to control. Unlike that playboy Tony Stark, Nick Fury couldn't even find hostages, and he wasn't easy to find. Unlike Blade, Tony Stark, no matter what, still had the Stark Industries Group behind him.

Moreover, if pushed to the limit, Tony Stark might lean toward the military and other forces, and those forces would certainly be very welcoming.

But in that case, how could he protect Earth's safety!

A bunch of guys who just sit in their positions and eat!

Nick Fury thought and cursed in his heart. Compared to those guys in the military, he increasingly felt that his old superior, Pierce, was relatively trustworthy and reliable.

Flipping the file to the next page, Nick Fury had a headache again. This was another guy who was equally hard to control: the former Punisher, now the Saint Light Practitioner, Frank.

Parents deceased, family gone, he could basically be said to be living in this world all alone. This kind of person with no ties is the most difficult.

It was fine before; at most he was just a top-tier soldier, and couldn't cause any impact. At worst, just don't invite him to join the Avengers. If he likes to strike at gang members, let him strike; anyway, there will always be gang members.

But now, the power Frank displayed when he came out that day had told Nick Fury that he was no longer a person of the same grade as Black Widow and Hawkeye.

In Nick Fury's heart, if this guy joined the Avengers, he would be the strongest comprehensive combat power at present.

Bruce Banner was stronger than Frank, but the Hulk after transforming was too uncontrollable. Just this point alone made Nick Fury think many times about removing Bruce Banner from the Avengers list, but considering combat power, he still didn't do it.

On Tony Stark's side, as a weapons expert, in Nick Fury's vision now, he wasn't a main combat member at all, but rather logistics support personnel and technical support.

The others were even less worth mentioning; they couldn't compare to Frank's combat power at all.

Tsk... how exactly should this be handled?

Nick Fury looked at Johnson's photo and suddenly had inspiration.

The relationship between these two people seemed very different. Frank not only called to help Johnson, but the two also disappeared together from S. H. I. E. L. D.'s monitoring.

So, are they friends... brothers... or lovers?

After another round of thinking, Nick Fury added Johnson's name to the pending area. Thus, the preliminary list of Avengers personnel was out.

Main combat power: Saint Light Practitioner—Frank

Unstable highest combat power: Hulk—Banner

Remote support personnel: Hawkeye—Barton

Information officer, auxiliary combat power, and vase: Black Widow—Natasha

Logistics and technical support: Tech Genius—Tony

Looking at this main personnel list, Nick Fury discovered a bit of an omission. They still lacked the existence of a spiritual leader.

None of these people now are simple, even Hawkeye and Black Widow are the same. If there isn't a leader who can hold the field, the role this Avengers can play is still limited.

However, this kind of person who has personality charm, can be collectively acknowledged by these people, and whose combat power can't be too bad—where to find such a person...

Eh... if Rogers were alive until now, how good that would be...

Nick Fury walked to the window and sighed. ===== CHAPTER 37 =====
