Chapter 370: Get her back to Chunshan

~10 min read 1,974 words

I waited for a long time without seeing a trace of Huang Weiwei, and I couldn't call her; knowing she had driven the car away after sending me off, she must have had her own plans.

The number of people in the complex increased; most were families out for a walk, the old supporting the young.

The elevator door behind me opened, and a group of laughing young people poured out. Seeing me sitting on the steps, they exchanged glances, wanting to say something but stopping.

I was well-dressed, yet sitting on the steps like a vagrant; it was truly a sight that lacked elegance.

I looked at them, smiled, stood up, and nodded, "Happy New Year."

They smiled back and gave me the same blessing.

"Waiting for someone?" they asked, not sounding particularly concerned.

"Yes," I replied, walking to the side. I didn't want to chat with them; they were all strangers, and I couldn't find a reason to talk to them.

"There are stone benches over there. Sitting on the ground is cold," they told me, pointing to a pavilion not far away.

I thanked them. I knew they were suspicious of my identity. People living in such a high-end complex were either rich or noble; no matter what, their personal quality and cultivation wouldn't allow them to sit on the ground.

As I walked toward the pavilion, I admired the flowers and plants along the road, not taking the young people's suspicion to heart at all.

Huang Weiwei still hadn't come.

The phone suddenly rang. I took it out and saw it was Qian Youyu.

"Old brother, where are you?"

"Drinking the north wind," I replied irritably.

Qian Youyu laughed and said loudly, "The leaders are all out drinking the north wind, what wind is left for us to drink? How about you leave some for me?"

I laughed along, my heart stirred, and I said, "Old Qian, if you want to drink, come over, I'll save some for you."

Qian Youyu seemed to sense something and quickly asked, "County Magistrate, what is your specific location?"

I looked up and around, saw a few characters standing on the roof of the building behind me, and told him, "Xiangjiang City Garden."

Qian Youyu exclaimed in surprise, "Damn, the most high-end residential complex in all of Hengyue City. I know it, I'll be there immediately."

After hanging up on Qian Youyu, my heart calmed down a lot.

Before I reached the pavilion, I turned back and encountered the same group of young people, who were laughing and preparing to set off fireworks.

Seeing me, they stopped what they were doing and asked, "Do you live here too?"

I nodded with a smile, looked at the colorful fireworks beside them, and said, "Can you set off fireworks here?"

"Why not? This place is so wide and big, it's fine."

"Doesn't the property management care?"

"They wouldn't dare."

I didn't say anything more, thinking to myself that once I truly moved in, I would definitely have to report this to the property management; in such a high-end complex, fireworks should never be allowed under any circumstances.

After walking a few steps, I saw Huang Weiwei driving the car over, but I didn't go up to meet her; instead, I hid myself in the bushes by the road.

Huang Weiwei drove to the bottom of the building, didn't see me, and looked around blankly.

I wanted to laugh. Little lady, you dare to stand me up? I'll let you know that pigeons are also birds that eat meat.

She took out her phone, and a moment later, my phone rang.

"Chen Feng, where are you?"

"Lost," I said, holding back a laugh.

"Tell me quickly, where are you?"

"You don't want me anymore, why do you care where I am?"

"You're not going to tell me, are you?"

"Even if I told you, you wouldn't know."

"Tell me!"

"Turn around," I directed her, walking out of the bushes myself and watching her smile from afar.

She ran over, pounded my chest with her little fists in a rage, and whispered, "Bad person!"

I grabbed her little hands and also whispered, "Where am I bad?"

"Everywhere," she blushed and scolded, "Small-minded man."

Our flirting left the group of young people dumbfounded. You have to know, just a few minutes ago, I was sitting on the steps of the magnificent complex like a down-and-out stray dog. Now, a beautiful girl was acting coquettishly with me; this is a scene many men dream of.

"Get in the car," Huang Weiwei threw the keys to me and ordered.

"Where to?" I played dumb.

"Home."

"Home? Aren't you..." I asked, testing the waters.

"We're not going. You think I'm that petty? A little announcer, can she really turn the world upside down?" she said contemptuously, a trace of disdain appearing on her face.

"But I already promised her we would go."

"So what if we don't go?" She left me behind and walked toward the car on her own.

I had no choice but to follow. Passing by the group of young people preparing to set off fireworks, I stopped and said, "The fireworks look good."

They laughed and whispered, "Big brother, your girlfriend is really beautiful."

I smiled, "Not a girlfriend, she's my wife."

As the car left the complex gate, I saw Qian Youyu's car coming toward us. I braked and rolled down the window.

Qian Youyu ran over, leaned against my car window, and smiled, handing over a cigarette.

Just as I was about to reach out and take it, Huang Weiwei beside me gave a soft hum through her nose.

This hum made Qian Youyu blush, and he awkwardly slapped his own face, cursing, "I'm an old man, my eyes are dim, how did I not see Cadre Huang?"

Qian Youyu knew Huang Weiwei, and he knew Huang Weiwei's identity.

"Leader, Happy New Year, may you get rich," Qian Youyu turned to pay his New Year's respects to me, his eyes full of smiles.

"Come, come, let's give out red envelopes for the New Year, for good luck," Qian Youyu handed me a red envelope.

I laughed, "Old Qian, do you think I'm still a child? Still giving out red envelopes."

Qian Youyu laughed, "I'm learning from the Cantonese now; there's a custom to giving out red envelopes for the New Year. Anyone who isn't married can receive one. In Guangdong, the married ones give them to the unmarried ones, unlike here in Hengyue City, where there's no decorum."

Just as I was about to speak, Qian Youyu took out another red envelope and handed it to Huang Weiwei, saying, "Cadre Huang, good luck."

Huang Weiwei blushed. For someone her age to receive a red envelope for the New Year was indeed a bit awkward.

She didn't take it, saying, "Boss Qian, I'll pass."

"How can you pass?" Qian Youyu said with a serious face, "This red envelope is for good luck, and it's not much money. It's about luck. To be honest, Cadre Huang, you two are the first people I've given red envelopes to this year. I'm happy."

He said it so repeatedly that it was hard to refuse again.

While Qian Youyu was talking, he was smoking, and the smoke blew into my face, making my "smoking worm" restless.

Huang Weiwei coughed lightly as the smoke hit her, a trace of displeasure appearing on her face.

"County Magistrate, shall we get out of the car and talk for a bit?" Qian Youyu sensed Huang Weiwei's displeasure.

I turned to look at Huang Weiwei.

Huang Weiwei nodded and said, "You two go to the side and talk."

I felt as if I had been granted amnesty and immediately opened the car door to get out.

Once out of the car, we walked around to the back, and I reached out to ask Qian Youyu for a cigarette.

Qian Youyu smiled wholeheartedly and lit it for me.

After taking a long drag, I felt refreshed.

A Deputy County Magistrate and a construction contractor standing on the empty street, puffing away—the scene was as ridiculous as it could be.

But I couldn't care about that; I didn't get out of the car just to smoke, I still had a task to entrust to Qian Youyu.

"Old Qian, do you know Xiao Lin, the announcer at the county TV station?" I asked, deliberately sounding distracted.

"Don't know her," Qian Youyu shook his head and laughed at himself with disdain, "I want to know her, but she doesn't want to know me."

"Do you want to know her?"

"No."

I wanted to kick him. Qian Youyu, you old guy, do you really not want to?

"Be honest, do you want to?"

"Even if I want to, there's no way!" Qian Youyu spread his hands, looking helpless, "What am I? She's from the TV station, would she give me face?"

"Face is something you give yourself," I said, "People are all the same, there's nothing amazing about it."

"Not the same, very different. How can we be the same? Just like you, little brother, you're a leader, and I'm just a commoner, can we be the same?"

"How can we be different? Everyone has a nose and a face. Besides, Old Qian, you're a leader in your own right."

Qian Youyu laughed, looking exactly like a wagging pug.

"Little brother, is there something you need to entrust to your old brother?"

Qian Youyu had been in society for decades and could read people to some extent.

"Nothing major," I said lightly, whispering to him that Lin Xiaoxi was staying at the Xinlinyin, and finally said, "Trouble yourself to make a trip and send her back to Chunshan County."

Qian Youyu was dumbfounded, his heart jumping with fear, and he opened his mouth to ask me, "What if she refuses to go with me?"

"Think of a way yourself; no matter how difficult it is, you must get her back to Chunshan."

"I can't just tie her up and take her back!"

"I don't care."

Qian Youyu jumped up like a monkey, bewildered, "How can you not care?"

I laughed, "Old Qian, you're a man with ways, I believe in you."

Actually, I had no confidence in my heart. What kind of person was Lin Xiaoxi? Would she obediently follow Qian Youyu? People from the TV station live off their culture. People who live off culture are all arrogant. It's as if, in this world, only they are the ones who can save it.

Qian Youyu sighed and said, "Little brother, if I don't do well what you entrusted to me, I'll have failed you. I'm off."

He turned around almost aggressively, walked a few steps, then turned back, walked to Huang Weiwei's car, bowed, and smiled, "Cadre Huang, I'll invite you two for a New Year's dinner another day."

Huang Weiwei replied with a smile, "No need to be so polite."

Qian Youyu didn't say anything more, looked at me deeply, and drove away without looking back.

I patted my clothes and exhaled several times into the air, as if wanting to spit out the smell of smoke from my mouth.

Getting back into the car, Huang Weiwei handed me the red envelope and said, "This Boss Qian, he's a big spender."

I looked at her, feeling confused.

"See for yourself."

I opened the red envelope, and inside was a neat stack of money, estimated to be no less than ten thousand yuan.

"What should we do?"

"Return it to him," I said without hesitation.

"Will he accept it?"

"No."

"Then how do we return it?"

"I have a way," I said, stuffing the two red envelopes into the compartment in front of the passenger seat. ===== CHAPTER 371 =====
