Chapter 6: A Pitiful Play
Henry’s situation was not a difficult problem for those present.
As the saying goes, for every policy from above, there is a countermeasure from below. There are many regulations in Hollywood, but as long as someone is determined to bypass them, they can always find a way.
Therefore, Qian Ning spoke up: "I can sign a temporary talent contract with Henry, then sign a performance contract with the production team and purchase insurance to ensure all procedures are compliant. How about that?"
The producer naturally had no objections. All he needed to do was ensure that the use of the production budget and everything during the filming process had no legal issues.
The reason Qian Ning was only willing to sign a temporary contract was that he still needed to see if this young man was worth cultivating.
As the lowest of the low in Hollywood with the least human rights, Henry naturally had no objections to the actions of these big shots.
Either way, he would only be screwed over for this one production. If he really suffered a loss, he would just treat it as paying tuition to gain experience.
Once the paperwork was quickly completed, Henry was taken to the filming location, where Qian Ning explained the shooting plan he had devised with the action team's prop crew.
Qian Ning said: "See that brown car? You are trapped in the back seat of this car driven by the bad guys, which is also the car scheduled for the explosion. At that time, the heroine will drive a red convertible parallel to this car."
"We have already installed a mechanism in the car that can control it to drive straight at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour. Before passing the first tree marked with yellow, you must climb out of the window and prepare to jump."
"The first marked tree is your signal to jump into the back seat of the convertible. The second marked tree is the signal for the demolition crew to detonate."
"There will be a mechanism on the ground to launch the car from the rear to the front while it explodes. The vehicle is scheduled to land after flipping in the air, and because of the special flame mechanism, the explosion flames will be particularly large."
"The old guy burying the explosives is a veteran in the industry and is trustworthy. We have also tested the explosion with models, so we can meet the director's requirements for the action."
"As for the third pickup truck with the iron frame, besides having a camera mounted to chase and film, it will also have a safety wire attached to your body."
"If there is any accident, two staff members will tighten the wire and hoist you up. This is your safety device. Did you hear my explanation clearly?"
Alright, now he understood why the previous person had refused the role.
The only safety measure was a single wire, and in order to allow the stuntman to jump from one car to another, this wire would not be taut at the beginning.
Only when an accident occurred would the safety personnel tighten the wire to hoist the stuntman up.
What kind of injuries would this time delay cause?
Assuming the wire wasn't pulled in time and the person didn't jump to the other car, Henry would either be caught in the explosion, crushed by the launched vehicle, or dragged along the ground by the wire.
Not to mention whether that initially slack wire would hinder the stuntman's movements. It would be hilarious if he got tangled or tripped in mid-air.
Simply put, listening to this plan full of loopholes, if he weren't a Kryptonian, he would have to be brain-damaged to agree to this action design and safety guarantee.
"Can you do it?" the nervous director asked, adding: "You have to know, we only have one chance for the actual filming."
Compared to the worried director, the producer was not that nervous. To him, if this shot couldn't be filmed, then don't film it. He wouldn't increase the budget; not filming would actually reduce some risks.
Henry's attitude was even simpler. Actually, this action plan had a chance of success, it was just extremely unsafe. Especially the safety guarantee after an incident occurred; it felt completely unreliable.
For Henry, who possessed Kryptonian superpowers, he only needed to ensure his performance was successful to hide his abilities under the guise of a high success rate, preventing his exposure.
It was like facing bullets from a firearm. Even a normal person had a chance to dodge bullets, perhaps due to luck or the shooter missing.
So, as long as Henry avoided the bullet trajectory beforehand and didn't use super speed, he could pretend to be a normal person.
But if Henry chose to take the bullets with his body, that was clearly not something a normal person could do. Even if he played dumb, his abilities would be exposed for sure.
As for suggesting improvements to the safety equipment to make the whole plan more reliable, such thoughts flashed through Henry's mind and then went nowhere.
The reason was simple: first, Henry didn't have enough authority. Second, from the producer's perspective, he wouldn't necessarily provide more funds to improve safety measures.
This seemingly ambitious young man had an attitude of "if you dare to ask for more money, I dare to cut this shot." No one dared to provoke him.
So Henry pretended to inspect the car to be exploded and the back seat of the convertible, and then looked at the safety device on the third vehicle.
A moment later, Henry said: "Shall we try jumping a few times first, and if there are no problems, we'll do it for real?"
Qian Ning immediately said: "Good, let's do the first test jump." When testing the action, he, as the leader of the action team, gave the orders, while the director watched from the side to check the effect or offer suggestions.
Although there were budget constraints, for this scene, three identical brown cars were prepared for the protagonist to jump from.
One was rigged with explosives and flame mechanisms for the actual shot. Since this car had explosives, it wasn't moved easily.
One was used to film the interior of the car, showing the protagonist fighting the bad guys. Therefore, several doors had been removed from this car to mount camera tripods.
The last car was both a backup and used to film some normal driving shots.
It was this car that was driven next to the convertible. Qian Ning said: "At that time, the distance between the two cars will be about this much, within one meter. The reason we can't get closer is that there will be explosions and flips during the actual filming. If the two cars are too close, the other one is easily affected."
"So, from what part does my shot begin?" Henry asked.
At this point, the director stepped in to explain: "The protagonist fights the bad guys, and then climbing out of the window is filmed in a close-up inside the car. So when it switches to you, you are sitting on the window frame, with your upper body outside. Adjust your posture, and then jump!"
Having understood, Henry immediately went up to try it once.
During the first test jump, both cars were stationary. Henry adjusted his posture sitting on the window frame, and after getting confirmation from the director, he continued with the next action.
That was to climb onto the roof with his hands, bend his legs to step on the window frame, and then turn around while pushing off with all his might, allowing himself to fly steadily into the back seat of the convertible. The process was calm and uneventful.
"No!" the director shouted.
