Chapter 7
Even Henry, who was face-down with his face buried in the leather seat, heard the director’s dissatisfied shout.
He had no choice but to pull himself out of his prone position, jump out of the car, and see what the director was unhappy about.
Before he could even ask, the director said excitedly: "It can't be a lunge; you have to do a flip in the air, creating the feeling that you didn't have time to jump, were blown away with the car, and then rolled into the back seat of the other vehicle."
This... Henry was speechless. But the "as expected" expressions on the faces of the people around him made Henry understand even more why the previous stuntman had left.
Relying on these barely safe measures, jumping out of a car during an explosion was dangerous enough; to add a rolling motion on top of that!
If I weren't a Kryptonian, I'd definitely kill this director first!
However, as one of the lowest-ranking actors in Hollywood with the least human rights, Henry certainly couldn't give up this opportunity he had fought for. He really had to do it, even with tears in his eyes.
He wouldn't actually cry, but Henry first put on a wronged expression. Then, under the director's encouragement and instigation, he got back onto the car window, performed a front flip in the air, and landed in the back seat of the convertible.
This time, the director was so happy he shouted: "Yes, yes, yes! That's it. We're ready to roll."
Qian Ning quickly smoothed things over: "Wait, wait a moment, Director. Let's try a moving jump, with the safety gear on. See if you want to go to a camera position to check the effect."
"Oh, oh, okay. Let's do that, try it again." The director, his IQ having returned, compromised.
For the moving test jump, the director took a position on the support vehicle, standing in the bed of a pickup truck. The safety wire was, of course, attached to Henry and adjusted to the appropriate length.
Before starting, two support staff members test-pulled the wire to confirm that in an emergency, they could hoist Henry up rather than letting him fall onto the road and roll.
Qian Ning took the wheel of the brown car himself, while the convertible driven by the female lead was handled by her stunt double.
In a stunt performance that required maintaining vehicle speed and directional stability, no one took the "vase" female lead seriously; it was safer to have her dedicated stunt double perform.
That female stunt performer was a member of Qian Ning's action team, specializing in doubling for female leads. Besides being able to perform all kinds of stunts, her driving skills were also impeccable.
Unlike other teams that lacked good female stunt performers, most of the time they would just have a smaller male stunt double wear women's clothing to stand in for the female lead in stunt shots.
Henry's moving test jump was the same as the static one. With a front flip, he landed steadily in the back seat of the convertible.
There was just one small problem: the safety wire. Because it was slack at the beginning, it tended to whip around in the air.
To avoid getting tangled in the wire in mid-air, Henry waited a moment after the car reached a constant speed. He jumped at the right time, dodged the whipping wire, and flipped into the back seat of the other car.
It was this "slight wait" that made Qian Ning mistakenly think he wasn't confident. Even though the whole set of actions was completed, the director was very excited, stating that this was exactly what he wanted.
Before the official take, members of the action team's prop department gathered around the brown car rigged with explosives to perform final checks, including the speed-control device and steering control.
The director was busy checking camera angles everywhere to ensure he could capture all the shots he wanted.
As the big boss of the action team, Qian Ning quietly pulled Henry aside and said: "You hesitated for a moment just now. Is everything okay?"
Henry certainly didn't feel there was any problem and said confidently: "No problem."
In their line of work, the biggest fear is a lack of confidence. Although he couldn't see any issues from Henry's expression, Qian Ning still said: "If you're not sure, just use your own method to jump into the red car; don't worry about the director's request for a flip or whatever."
"There's only one chance. Whatever material he captures is all he'll have to edit the movie. Although there are safety measures, I don't want our collaboration to be just this once. Do you understand what I mean?"
"I know. Don't worry, Boss Qian Ning."
Although he said that, Henry firmly believed that his collaboration with Qian Ning's team would likely only happen this one time.
Even if he wanted to do stunt work, he didn't want to follow this third-rate team. If he weren't a Kryptonian, he really wouldn't dare to perform using the plans they designed.
Thinking about future similar collaborations, it would be better to just be a background extra. Staying under Qian Ning, the chance of his superpowers being exposed seemed a bit high.
However, Qian Ning being willing to say these things to him meant he knew how to look after people.
Finally, after multiple checks, it was time for the official take. Henry was already sitting on the window of the back seat of the unmanned brown car.
"1, 2, 3, Action!"
At the director's command, the most expensive shot of this B-movie officially began filming.
The unmanned brown car accelerated rapidly to the target speed, while the red convertible, under the control of the female stunt double, steadily drove alongside the brown car.
Facing the wind, Henry quickly adjusted his posture, switching to holding onto the roof with his hands behind his back; facing outward, he moved his feet onto the open window frame.
As he passed the first marked road tree, he jumped forward suddenly.
Just as his feet left the window frame, the vehicle passed the second marked road tree. The pyrotechnician at the control center activated the wireless detonation switch.
At the same time, the ground-based catapult mechanism had already been triggered after the front wheels rolled over it. When the rear wheels pressed onto the mechanism, the rear of the car was immediately launched forward!
The explosives and flame mechanisms under the back seat and in the trunk were activated by the remote switch, exploding into a fireball.
At this moment, Henry, in mid-air, lowered his head, tensed his back and abdomen, and rolled forward. It was as if he had been propelled by the car's explosion, flying out.
This explosion made Henry realize that the movie trope of a hand grenade blowing a person several meters away was definitely an exaggeration.
Anyway, the big bomb behind him didn't overly affect his posture in the air. His whole body landed steadily in the back seat of the convertible, just as he had in the test jump.
The only difference was that his pant legs were stained with burning fuel, forcing Henry to quickly pat them out.
After clearing the explosion radius of the brown car, the red car braked rapidly. Someone rushed up with a fire extinguisher, and several people worked together to put out the burning brown car, while another person ran over to spray out the flames on Henry's feet.
With that, the shot was complete. The director shouted in ecstasy.
