Chapter 518, Where is my sister? (first update)

~7 min read 1,295 words

In their puzzled gazes, Mo Chen pulled his suitcase and shuffled inside.

The young man was bundled up tightly, his face covered with a mask. Except for his blonde hair and pair of brown eyes, nothing else could be seen.

"Xiaojiu, who is this?" Veya asked curiously.

Mo Chen bowed to them and then mustered the courage to say, "Hello, I am her younger brother, my name is Mo Chen."

"Younger brother?" Veya and the others were surprised.

Ye Jiuliang raised her hand and gave him a knock on the head, pointing to the only unoccupied guest room downstairs, "No one’s in that guest room, go in and tidy yourself up."

Mo Chen looked at the polished floor, afraid of dirtying it with his shoes. He took them off and then, carrying his suitcase, headed toward the guest room.

Once the room door was closed, Veya asked curiously, "Xiaojiu, who is that boy?

"Is that the young master of Tengyue Group?" Jiang Hai suddenly spoke up, his tone questioning yet certain.

He always followed the news, and there had been no shortage of reports about Tengyue Group these days; he had also seen the photo of Mo Su with Mo Chen in the newspaper.

He couldn’t make out the young man’s face with the mask, but what were the chances that he would have the same name as Mo Chen?

Veya was stunned, "Really?"

Ye Jiuliang hummed in affirmation, acknowledging it.

"Xiaojiu, isn’t his sister Mo Su..." The words were only half out when the old Mrs. Jiang glanced toward the guest room, fearful that Mo Chen would hear.

Ye Jiuliang understood the old lady’s worry and gave her a reassuring look, "Grandma, don’t worry, he’s not like Mo Su."

Mo Su was ambitious and scheming, whereas Mo Chen was simple-natured; the siblings were complete opposites.

"Xiaojiu, why did you suddenly bring him home?" Although the house was soundproofed, Veya still subconsciously lowered her voice.

Ye Jiuliang didn’t hide the truth from them and straightforwardly said, "He was kicked out of the house by Mo Su, without money or a phone. I found him on the side of the road."

Upon hearing the reason, Veya and the others were surprised.

One had to be extremely heartless to kick out one’s own younger brother, and to even take away his phone and wallet.

Ye Jiuliang turned her head toward Mum Jue, speaking softly, "Mum Jue, please set out an extra pair of chopsticks."

Mum Jue responded with an ’Alright’ and went back to the kitchen.

Li Mochan and another went upstairs to wash up, while the old Mrs. Jiang sat back on the sofa, her gaze frequently drifting toward the guest room.

Regardless of everything, he was Mo Su’s biological brother, and if anything were to happen in the future, Mo Chen would definitely side with his sister.

Letting him stay here felt a bit improper.

Seeing the old lady’s concerns, Veya spoke to comfort her, "Mom, Xiaojiu is not wrong in judging people. Don’t worry. And I think that boy looks quite innocent, with no ill intentions."

The old Mrs. Jiang nodded, the worry in her eyes slightly eased.

A while later, the door to the guest room opened.

The faint noise drew three inquisitive looks.

The sudden attention made Mo Chen freeze in place.

He scratched his head and involuntarily withdrew his gaze, his toes curling with a hint of anxiety and discomfort.

Veya scrutinized the boy who stood frozen, his fluffy blonde hair slightly disheveled, the light green tracksuit enhancing the youthful vitality unique to adolescents.

But why was he always wearing a mask? Veya wondered.

"Excuse me, where is my sister?" Mo Chen swallowed nervously, asking.

Looking into the young man’s clear eyes, Veya remembered her own son and softened her voice, "The sister you’re asking about, is that Xiaojiu?"

Mo Chen nodded vigorously, his gaze involuntarily surveying the surroundings.

"Xiaojiu has gone upstairs and will come down later." Veya waved him over, "Come sit over here."

Mo Chen glanced at Jiang Hai and the old Mrs. Jiang. Seeing no objections, he shuffled over.

He chose a vacant sofa and sat at the edge, sitting with a straight back, hands on his knees, the very picture of a well-behaved student.

Veya couldn’t help but laugh at his restrained demeanor.

"You don’t need to be nervous, we aren’t man-eating tigers," she said in a cheerful tone.

Meeting her smiling eyes, Mo Chen felt a slight relief within, while his peripheral vision kept a watchful eye on the staircase.

"Here, have a glass of water." Veya poured a glass of water and placed it in front of him.

The corners of Mo Chen’s eyes curved, "Thank you."

At that moment, footsteps were heard coming from the staircase.

Mo Chen swiftly turned his head to look, his dull eyes suddenly lighting up.

He stood up, his thick eyebrows raising above warm, smiling hazel eyes.

"Why are you still wearing a mask?" Ye Jiuliang asked, seeing that he still had his mask on, a frown transient across his brow.

Conscious of the others around, Mo Chen raised a hand to scratch his neck, looking somewhat embarrassed.

Ye Jiuliang took out a can of ointment from his pocket and handed it to him, his tone indifferent, "Take this and apply it to your face."

Mo Chen quickly took the ointment and slowly removed his mask.

The imprint of a palm, previously hidden by the mask, was now exposed for everyone to see, leaving Jiang Hai and the rest speechless in astonishment.

His face was swollen, and the force behind that slap could only be imagined.

It was indeed too vicious.

Veya found her voice again, "Xiaojiu, what happened to his face?"

Ye Jiuliang didn’t avoid the topic despite Mo Chen’s presence, straightforwardly saying, "Mo Su hit him."

"..."

Veya was stunned, as were Madam Jiang and Jiang Hai, all showing incredulous expressions.

After all, how could Mo Su bring herself to hit her own younger brother so violently?

An awkward silence suddenly descended around them.

"Let’s eat," a cold voice broke the stillness as Li Mochan folded Ye Jiuliang into his arms and walked towards the dining room.

Mo Chen watched Ye Jiuliang’s retreating back, feeling somewhat at a loss.

Then, Ye Jiuliang’s voice came from ahead, "There are new slippers in the shoe cabinet by the door, wear them and come over to eat."

Mo Chen paused for a moment, then cracked a grin, his smile carrying a hint of foolishness.

The warm orange light enveloped the dining room, and the table was steaming with hot dishes, their tempting fragrance easily stirring everyone’s appetite.

With Ye Jiuliang there, the atmosphere could never go cold.

"A horse named Wangcai, really?" Veya couldn’t close her mouth from laughing, expressing her utmost admiration for the name.

It wasn’t strange to hear of a dog with that name, but she chose to give it to a horse, breaking the norm.

It was creative and refreshingly novel.

Ye Jiuliang swallowed the food in his mouth and nodded, "Doesn’t the name sound very auspicious?"

"Auspicious indeed," Madam Jiang said in agreement.

"Mo Chen, just grab whatever you want to eat, no need to be polite," Veya said softly, noticing that Mo Chen had been eating only white rice and vegetables.

Mo Chen looked up, his lips curving into a smile, "Mhm."

From childhood, it was rare for his family’s dining table to gather everyone together. His "Master Extinction" sister was brought up by their grandfather, his parents were seldom at home, and often, he was the only one in the house.

Being part of a family gathering like this, able to chat and laugh freely, was something he had always longed for.
