Chapter 882: The Human Recognized by the Wolf Pack
Seeing that Does Daigua could climb, Xia Qing was very happy; seeing what Does Daigua was climbing toward, Xia Qing was very vexed.
Xia Qing walked over and picked up Does Daigua, who was only three meters from the fig tree. Possibly used to being picked up, Does Daigua fell into Xia Qing's hand without any struggle, limbs hanging down naturally, with a perfect daigua look on its face.
Xia Qing looked at it and, for no reason, thought again of Tang Huai laughing so hard he rocked back and forth, looking like he deserved a beating. Her temper flared right up. "Want to eat figs? You've got a decent eye."
On the east side of her yard, the insect-proof net shed covered two orange trees over two meters tall, two fig trees under two meters, and four jujube saplings. Only the twelve spring figs on the fig trees had slowly turned from green to red and were ready to eat.
Although Xia Qing couldn't smell it, she knew the figs must be giving off some kind of scent, attracting various insects and birds to circle around the insect-proof net shed. This scent also attracted Does Daigua, making it, having just regained mobility, crawl over just to eat the fruit.
Xia Qing picked a fruit and waved it in front of Does Daigua, discovering that its eyes actually followed the fruit. It really was much better.
A monkey recovered — its destructive power was definitely greater than the red squirrel's.
Xia Qing's face darkened. She drew her dagger and, murderous aura bristling, pointed it at the fig tree to warn the little monkey: "Dare to pick fruit yourself, and I'll kill you! If you want to eat fruit, you have to exchange goods or labor for it!"
A little monkey that could be carried by a giant bear was definitely no ordinary monkey. Xia Qing decided that starting today, she would strengthen its education and teach it the rules of Territory Three.
If it couldn't learn, then during the last month of convalescing in Territory Three, it would have to spend its time in a cage.
After laying down the rules, Xia Qing hung the little monkey on the clothes-drying pole, washed the figs, gave half to Wolf Lao Da, and ate the other half herself.
The yellow-light figs were astringent with a touch of sweet-and-sour. Xia Qing had never eaten fresh figs before the catastrophe, so she didn't know if that was just how figs tasted — the texture was far worse than strawberries.
Wolf Lao Da liked them very much. After swallowing one in a single bite, it nudged Xia Qing again and again with its horns, asking for more. Xia Qing picked another — Wolf Lao Da got half, Does Daigua got half.
Does Daigua really did like this fruit; its chewing speed was noticeably faster than yesterday. When it wasn't eating, it looked dopey; when it was chewing, it looked silly. In short, no matter how you looked at it, it didn't seem to have a brain.
After Wolf Lao Er came back from catching bugs and collected the eggs, Xia Qing gave it half as well. The remaining half still went to Wolf Lao Da.
Wolf Lao Er didn't like to eat them, so Xia Qing gave its half to Territory Three's employee No. 001, Little Feimao. Little Feimao was also picky — it clearly wasn't very interested in this fruit. But when Xia Qing tried to take it back, it quickly grabbed the fruit in its mouth and ran off.
The little fellow ran to the northern buffer forest and hid the fig in its little tree hollow.
Not long after it hid the fruit, a chubby little red squirrel burrowed into Little Feimao's tree hollow, snatched the fig, climbed over Territory Three's wall, and ran back to Mountain 49, Zone Three.
While the squirrels were busy stealing from each other's homes, Xia Qing was sitting inside her own territory, eating breakfast while reviewing last night's surveillance footage.
When she saw the cute little wolf from the queen's house being pushed aside with one paw by the handsome giant wolf, Xia Qing laughed out loud.
When she saw the little wolf and the broken-waist wolf finish their bath and, protected by the alpha wolf, sleep under the eaves, Xia Qing felt that the handsome giant wolf, such a huge lump in the corner, was a little pitiful.
When she saw the broken-leg wolf finish its bath and roll around in the yard, getting covered in mud, Xia Qing wasn't surprised at all — this fellow was a slovenly wolf to begin with.
Seeing that the black wolf hadn't bathed all night, dutifully protecting the pack, Xia Qing greatly admired the alpha wolf's power of command.
When dawn was near, the broken-waist wolf went inside and carried out two cucumbers. The alpha wolf got one, the little wolf got a few bites, it got most of one, and the other wolves got nothing — even though the broken-leg wolf circled around it again and again, it didn't get a single bite. The broken-waist wolf, as always, was stingy.
The wolf pack, as always, followed the rules. Xia Qing's Shed No. 2 and the planting greenhouse both had cucumbers growing in them. The wolves must have smelled the cucumbers when passing by the sheds, but they knew the food inside the sheds belonged to Xia Qing, so even though they wanted to eat them, they wouldn't go in and pick any.
After finishing her meal, Xia Qing handed the territory over to Chen Zheng and Chen Cheng, gave each of them a fig, and asked them to help weed the corn shed.
Then Xia Qing drove to Territory Eight to buy fertilizer.
Her car had just left Territory Three's south gate when Tang Huai, squatting by the bus stop, watched helplessly as Xia Qing drove away. Dejected, he poked at the grass roots again and again with his seedling shovel.
Xia Qing must have seen him. Xia Qing was ignoring him. He had no chance to pet wolves or sheep. This was simply harder for Tang Huai to accept than being blacklisted by Zhang San.
What should he give to coax Xia Qing into a good mood?
After spreading the fertilizer on the rice fields, Xia Qing put on her diving suit and headed to Mountain 55 to dig up medicinal herbs. In the bamboo grove on the north side of Mountain 52, Xia Qing ran into the broken-leg wolf, who was catching field mice.
Seeing Xia Qing, the broken-leg wolf was especially happy, bouncing around joyfully, and even gave her a bamboo rat.
Xia Qing carried the bamboo rat over two mountain peaks. Passing by the crocodile pool, she saw two wolves eating crocodile. These two wolves saw Xia Qing but didn't bare their teeth or glare.
Since Xia Qing had fought alongside the wolf pack against the bears and then rushed to Mountain 55 to fill in the python pool, the wolves of the northern pack seemed to have accepted her as a companion. Most of them no longer bared their teeth at her.
Xia Qing entered Mountain 55 and heard the mountain-guarding wolf's howl. Then, not far after she walked on, she saw the alpha wolf appear in front of her.
Not seeing the little wolf, Xia Qing was disappointed. "My lord, I'm going into the python pool to dig up a few medicinal herbs."
The alpha wolf showed no intention of stopping her, and Xia Qing reached the python pool smoothly, changed into her diving suit, and jumped into the pool.
Three kinds of medicinal herbs grew inside this pool. The most valuable one, although a submerged plant, had certain requirements for light and temperature, so it only grew in the area ten meters below the water surface. In deeper places, the water temperature was lower and the light was nearly nonexistent — only one worthless plant grew there.
So Xia Qing had filled the python pool until only ten meters deep remained. The water in this pool still connected to the underground river through the cracks between the rocks, but that black python over ten meters long could no longer squeeze through the cracks to get through.
The alpha wolf had no objection to keeping this pool, because water from higher ground constantly flowed into the valley — there was no way this place could be without water.
After getting in the water, Xia Qing didn't rush to gather herbs. It was too hot, and the water felt wonderful. She wanted to swim a few laps to her heart's content. The little wolf with nouveau-riche gold-colored eyes lay on Shanfeng, seriously watching the human swimming back and forth in the water like a crocodile.
After Xia Qing gathered the three medicinal herbs the idol had specified and climbed ashore, she changed into protective gear, took out her phone, and earnestly communicated with the alpha wolf: "My lord, several of the wild boars on Mountain 49 must be hunted, or my chestnut trees and Chinese torreya trees will all be rooted up and killed by them."
The alpha wolf stared at the wild boar video on the phone for a few seconds, then raised its head: "Awoo—woo—woo——"
Hearing the alpha wolf's call, the six little wolves on the mountaintop all ran down together.
