Chapter 883: Wolf Lao Er
What does it feel like to be a twenty-six-year-old human collectively despised by six half-year-old wolf pups? Xia Qing understood it deeply today.
After gathering herbs on Mountain 55, Xia Qing complained to the lead wolf that there were too many wild boars in the valley. At the lead wolf's command, five wolf pups of various colors, led by the lead wolf's own pup, came running down the mountain toward her. Before Xia Qing could figure out how to pet the pups, the six little ones ran right past her and headed for the valley's exit.
The lead wolf glanced at Xia Qing and signaled her to follow.
Was she taking the pups out to hunt wild boar? So the boars in the valley had been left alive on purpose, as prey for the pups? Xia Qing felt she'd hit on the truth.
She immediately sped after them at full pace, pack on her back.
Noticing Xia Qing had picked up speed, the pack stopped giving her special treatment and switched to full pace ahead—and then…
Xia Qing fell behind.
By the time she arrived huffing and puffing at the bamboo grove on the north side of Mountain 52, she was met with a collective look of contempt from the six pups and eight adult wolves waiting for her on the hillside.
The lead wolf could tell Xia Qing was exhausted and let her rest a while before entering Mountain 49.
Xia Qing understood perfectly well why the pack had waited for her: Mountain 49 was human territory, and a pack traveling with this many pups didn't want to take risks—they needed her to move with them.
When Xia Qing arrived at the wild boar valley in Zone 3 of Mountain 49 with fourteen wolves, Wolf Lao Er had already come from Territory 3 and was waiting for them on the hillside.
The pups all ran over to interact with Wolf Lao Er, visibly affectionate.
Watching this with envy, Xia Qing negotiated with the lead wolf: "My lord, this place is too close to human settlements. Please don't let the pack howl—it'll draw a lot of human attention and be very dangerous."
The lead wolf understood what Xia Qing meant and gave a low howl. The pups circling Wolf Lao Er immediately leapt into the wild boar valley, three pups to a group, and began hunting boars about their own size.
Xia Qing could tell this wasn't the pups' first time hunting as a team—their coordination was seamless, and they quickly killed two boars and began feeding.
Xia Qing asked the lead wolf, "My lord, besides that little cutie with the golden eyes, which others are your pups?"
The lead wolf watched the pups in the valley and ignored Xia Qing.
Xia Qing carefully observed the adult wolves surrounding the valley. Of the four she-wolves she'd done prenatal checks on with the lead wolf, only two were present. The Broken-Waist Wolf and the Handsome Giant Wolf were nowhere to be seen—likely the pups in the valley were only part of this year's litter from the northern pack.
The rest were active in other zones.
After the six pups shared the organs and tender belly meat of the two boars, they actually teamed up to hunt a seven-hundred-plus-jin adult boar. The one leading them was the lead wolf's pup—that slightly stockier pup they called Wolf Lao Er!
What nerve!
The nine adult wolves watching didn't stop the pups—they all stood up and moved back and forth along the valley rim with the pups, ready to rescue them at any moment.
More important than watching the pups hunt, Xia Qing had other business. She entered the valley and hauled up the two boars the pack had hollowed out.
After testing their quality, she found one yellow-light and one red-light boar. Xia Qing immediately used her knife to chop off the parts the wolves had gnawed, then packed both boars into bags.
The meat the wolves didn't like was exactly what humans loved. The green-light one could be sold to Territory 1; she'd bring the yellow-light one back to Er Yong, and by evening she'd be eating a fragrant, hearty pork feast.
"Dong dong dong—"
Just as Xia Qing was about to send the boars back to the territory, she heard the sound of several boars charging. She turned and saw a herd of boars running toward her from the other side of the valley.
The little boars that had escaped earlier had brought reinforcements!
The boars' wails and roars carried into human territory. Tang Huai asked online, "Beard Feng, what's that noise? You guys slaughtering pigs on Mountain 49?"
"Yeah, slaughtering pigs." Although Beard Feng couldn't see the scene in Zone 3, Xia Qing had already briefed him—he knew it was the wolf pack hunting boars.
Tang Huai immediately asked, "Why are you slaughtering pigs today?"
Beard Feng, busy soothing Little Fifth, also wanted to know the answer to that question.
Zhang San came online: "Beard Feng, are you killing green-light boars?"
Beard Feng replied, "Third Brother, we've got too many boars in our valley and need to cull a few. Whether they're green-light or not, we don't know yet."
Zhang San responded, "Alright, if there are any green-light ones, I'll trade for some."
"Got it, Third Brother."
"Captain Hu, if there are yellow-light ones, can I trade for a few jin?" Qi Fu also came online.
"Brother Feng, I'd like to get a few jin of yellow-light pork too." Wen Nengjie also came online. After a busy month of farming, Territory 17 had finally built up some savings after selling grain and spinach seeds—the brothers could have a meal of yellow-light meat.
Beard Feng…
"Alright, if there are yellow-light ones, I'll let everyone know."
"Buzz."
Xia Qing had just handed the two boars to Er Yong when she received a message from her idol: Save me three jin of green-light tenderloin.
Xia Qing immediately replied: Got it, I'll deliver it to you before noon.
When her idol wants meat, she has to make it happen.
When Xia Qing returned to the wild boar valley with Lao Da, she found the situation had reversed: three adult boars had gained the upper hand, and the six pups were in grave danger!
Unlike Sheep Lao Da, who felt perfectly at ease following her, Xia Qing watched with her heart in her throat.
Two more minutes passed, and the lead wolf finally howled. Five adult wolves immediately leapt into the valley and pulled five pups to safety. The pups had lost their earlier excitement and lay on the ground, dusty and disheveled, tongues out, breathing rapidly.
Seeing the Black Wolf and Broken-Leg Girl standing together, guarding two gray pups and one black pup, Xia Qing finally understood these two wolves were a pair and had three pups of their own.
The remaining two pups belonged to a scarred black she-wolf.
The one fighting three adult boars alone in the valley—that little Wolf Lao Er with golden eyes and gray-brown fur—was the lead wolf's pup!
This Wolf Lao Er, like its mother, was a brain-domain accelerated evolver. Facing the attacks of three adult boars, it didn't panic or fear—instead, it kept looking for chances to counterattack.
But it wasn't fully grown yet—lacking strength and with teeth not sharp enough, it couldn't kill a big boar. Yet it refused to come up and kept on fighting.
Fourteen wolves and one human on the valley rim all watched this lopsided battle unfolding below.
Three minutes later, Wolf Lao Er—whose stamina was now declining more slowly—finally seized an opening and clawed out one of the big boar's eyes!
This boar was the very same seven-hundred-plus-jin adult boar Wolf Lao Er had led the other five pups to surround earlier.
The wounded boar let out an angry squeal and grew even more frenzied.
But with only one eye left, its fighting power had clearly dropped.
Another three minutes passed, and its other eye was clawed out by Wolf Lao Er too!
All that remained for the blinded boar was a death sentence. After knocking down several trees, that mountain of meat finally collapsed.
When Wolf Lao Er lunged in and sank its teeth hard into the big boar's neck, the five pups on the hillside leapt back into the valley and surrounded the other two boars.
They learned Little Wolf's fighting style—gouging out the wild boar's eyes!
