Chapter 190: Reflections on Current Power
The footsteps at the door gradually faded away; it was likely just a late-returning young wizard passing their dormitory entrance. The dormitory fell silent once more...
It took Allen a while longer to hear Harry draw the curtains of his four-poster bed; it seemed he too was pondering what Dobby had just said.
After this ordeal, Allen had lost his sleepiness. He suddenly recalled Harry mentioning Dobby before, saying a strange house-elf had been trying to stop him from returning to Hogwarts. At the time, he hadn't paid much attention, never imagining there were so many hidden details involved.
The matter even involved the Malfoy family. The Malfoys had always known the diary of Voldemort was in his possession and had been expecting something to happen; it seemed they knew the diary's secret.
But thinking back on the information gathered about the Malfoy family, Lucius Malfoy appeared to be a Death Eater, highly trusted by Voldemort. It made sense that he helped Voldemort preserve the diary as a Horcrux.
Then Allen thought of his encounter at Flourish and Blotts during the summer. He and Lucius had met only once then; it seemed Lucius had slipped the diary into the old notebooks he bought back then.
Allen gently touched the diary's cover and the magical artifact. He did not know whether to hate or thank Lucius.
Although the diary brought him some trouble, it also brought him many benefits, advancing his research into magic further. From this perspective, he should thank Lucius.
However, Lucius Malfoy gave him the diary entirely out of malice; this was something he must remember well in his heart.
The next evening, Allen returned to that abandoned girls' bathroom. He returned here because he needed to find a space for the basilisk to recover. Inside the magical artifact, the basilisk's injuries and bodily functions were in a frozen state; whatever it swallowed could not be digested, and its injuries would not heal.
Although the Chamber of Secrets had collapsed, the underground tunnel leading to it had not. There was still a vast space underground, and Allen intended to let the basilisk recover its injuries there.
He had Yodell open the entrance to the Chamber within the bathroom, then jumped down.
The tunnel leading to the Chamber still contained many fallen rocks, remnants of the Chamber's collapse that day; the other end of the passage was completely blocked.
Allen found a relatively clean, less damp spot and released the basilisk from the magical artifact.
The basilisk obediently kept its eyes tightly shut, curled into a ball, quietly recovering its injuries.
Allen then gently walked to the side and rear of its head, placing his wand upon it. He intended to modify its memory while the basilisk was at its weakest, which would greatly reduce the difficulty of the modification.
Regarding Allen's actions, the basilisk remained motionless and very compliant; its current memory still lingered on the point where Allen defeated it, spared it, and fed it its favorite food.
Its current memory was filled with fear and gratitude toward Allen, and what Allen now needed to do was to copy multiple instances of that fear and gratitude from the basilisk's memory and insert them into its other memories.
These inserted memories would amplify and layer the basilisk's feelings of gratitude and fear toward him.
Under such infinite amplification and layering, the basilisk would completely submit to him.
Modifying memories in this way is a long-term task; it cannot be done once and for all. It requires constant reinforcement.
He quickly finished today's modification. The basilisk also fell motionless into a deep sleep; deep sleep would help it recover its injuries rapidly.
Having finished his work, Allen had no intention of leaving. He gazed at the sleeping basilisk in the darkness, lost in thought.
Unknowingly, he had arrived in this world three years ago. So much had happened in these three years; the course of many events had exceeded his expectations.
He had transformed from a youth with no strength to bind a chicken into a wizard wielding powerful magical forces,
even fully utilizing the magical power he mastered to defeat a terrifying magical creature that had lived for over a thousand years. This was an feat he would never have dared to imagine before.
Although these achievements made him quite proud and arrogant, upon careful reflection, he felt his strength still had many shortcomings.
He now seemed to excel in both areas, achieving great success and progress in his own talent for Transfiguration and the study of Transfiguration spells. This laid a solid foundation for his feat of defeating the basilisk.
But upon careful reflection, defeating the basilisk was mainly because the basilisk's intelligence was not high enough and it was completely unaware of his methods.
He had gathered much information about the basilisk in advance; all kinds of information about the basilisk were transparent to him on one side. He had prepared for several months for this, pushing every ounce of power he mastered to the extreme before defeating the basilisk.
But things would not always be like this. The enemies he would face afterward would be more cunning and ferocious, and their methods would be even more diverse.
This year at Hogwarts was calm for the other students and teachers, but for Allen, it was not peaceful at all.
In this year, he once again recognized the terrifying nature of Voldemort.
Although the current Voldemort was in a very weak, half-dead state, a dark magical artifact he left behind decades ago was enough to throw Hogwarts into chaos.
Most importantly, through this incident, Allen learned some of Voldemort's trump cards and his incredibly ruthless personality.
Voldemort was ruthless to others, but even more ruthless to himself. Extracting his own memories was one thing, but splitting his own soul? Truly a generation of ruthless people!
Thinking about having to deal with an enemy as cunning and ferocious as Voldemort in the future made Allen's head ache.
Voldemort and the Death Eaters he led were far more cunning than the basilisk, and possessed far more methods.
Allen did not believe that the Dragon Breath he currently mastered, nor his Transformed Beast, could inflict much damage on Voldemort and the Death Eaters.
His talent for Transfiguration and his Transformed Beast appeared powerful, perhaps capable of catching others off guard when there was information asymmetry and they were unaware of him.
But once others learned his trump cards regarding his Transformed Beast and talent for Transfiguration, his talent for Transfiguration and Transformed Beast would no longer pose a significant threat to others.
Because the Transformed Beast lacked means for ranged attacks, and Dragon Breath could only spray about 10 meters.
For a world where combat methods are primarily ranged magical warfare, this was simply insufficient.
No matter how sharp the Razor Leopard's teeth or how keen its claws, if it cannot reach the enemy, it is all in vain. No matter how sturdy the mithril armor, able to block a few spells, more spells would tear it into fragments.
