Chapter 197: The Broken Wand
Hot Recommendation:
"The Broken Wand?" Ron asked with some confusion. "That wand is still with me. Why do you ask about this?"
"How do you plan to deal with that wand?" Allen had always wanted to find a wand to study.
However, every wand purchased in Ollivander's shop is actually filed with the Ministry of Magic, so without a valid reason, he cannot buy a wand for research.
So Ron's old wand is a very good object of study.
"Deal with it? Just throw it back into my drawer when I get back. What else can I do? That wand caused me enough misery last year." Ron said, still shaken.
Allen knew that if he directly asked Ron for that old wand, Ron certainly would not refuse, but he did not want to owe a favor.
"I want to introduce a new service in our shop—Used Wand Recycling!" Allen suddenly broke into a big smile.
Ron's interest was indeed piqued. "How does this recycling work?"
"You give me your old wand, and I will evaluate it." Allen said with a straight face.
Ron readily took out the old wand and placed it on the counter.
Allen pretended to pick it up and observe it.
The wand was very old, many places worn very smooth. The tip was worn until the unicorn hair was exposed. It looked like it had been used for a long time. A thick fist-sized patch of black magic tape was stuck in the middle of the wand, making the whole wand look very discordant.
Allen carefully peeled off the magic tape and saw that the wand was broken in the middle; the two halves were connected only by the unicorn hair.
If he hadn't seen Ron use it for a whole year last year, Allen would have thought this wand was completely broken.
However, judging from Ron's usage last year, most functions of this wand were still normal.
Although he had made a decision in his heart long ago, to dispel Ron's doubts, Allen still took out tools and carefully tested it for quite a while.
"I plan to recycle this wand for 10 Jin Jin Jialong." Allen gave his quote.
"Ah?! So high!" Ron looked at Allen in surprise. "I only spent 7 Jin Jin Jialong to buy a new one!"
"Every Hogwarts student's first wand has a discount. Buying the first wand is uniformly 7 Jin Jin Jialong; the rest is paid by the Ministry of Magic."
"A unicorn hair on the market alone costs 10 Jin Jin Jialong. A wand infused with the heart and soul of a wand-making master certainly cannot be worth only 7 Jin Jin Jialong." Allen explained patiently to Ron.
Ron was obviously stunned; this was the first time he had heard this knowledge.
"Then what is the normal selling price of a wand?" Allen suddenly became very curious.
"49 Jin Jin Jialong." Allen said expressionlessly.
Ron sucked in a breath of cold air upon hearing this; this was indeed a considerable sum of money.
"Your wand is too old, and after the wand broke, it was not preserved very well. The magical power of the unicorn hair inside has leaked away a lot, so I can only offer 10 Jin Jin Jialong."
Ron nodded hurriedly. He did not expect a useless old wand to sell for so much money. This price far exceeded his psychological expectation. He knew that usually, his total pocket money for a year did not even add up to 10 Jin Jin Jialong.
So they happily reached a deal.
Ron looked at the Jin Jin Jialong in his hand with the eyes of a lover.
"After recycling this one of yours, our shop's service will end." Allen said with a light cough.
He suddenly remembered finding that ancient runic notebook at Ron's house last year. The Weasley family is after all a long-established pure-blood family; there should be some family heritage. What if Ron went back and found a pile of discarded wands in the family basement and asked him to recycle them? He couldn't afford to pay that price.
So he deliberately said this speech just to plug this loophole.
Ron sighed with some disappointment, but he was still very happy that an old wand could sell for this price.
Then he left the wand shop to meet up with his family.
Before leaving, he also reminded Allen not to forget to call Harry.
Allen watched Ron's red hair disappear into the crowd of Diagon Alley, then carefully used an empty wand box to put away the old wand on the counter.
He was not in a hurry to study the wand; there was plenty of time at night.
Then he counted out 10 Jin Jin Jialong from his own wallet and threw them into the cash box under the counter. Just now, to act the part convincingly, those 10 Jin Jin Jialong had been taken from the cash box.
After doing all this, Allen went to the inner room to patrol again and found that Mr. Ollivander had not yet eaten breakfast, and the door to the micro-carving room remained tightly closed.
He sighed and returned to his post, skillfully dozing off...
When it was late at night and quiet, Allen carefully took out the box containing the broken wand and gently took the wand out of it.
The wand should be one of the most important inventions of wizards over these thousands of years, and also an indispensable important tool for modern wizards.
Having been in the wand shop for so long, Allen could not help but feel curious about the secrets of wands, but he could not directly ask Mr. Ollivander about such things; after all, that was his livelihood.
So he resorted to this underhanded tactic, getting a problematic wand to study.
Allen felt that figuring out the secrets of wands could help him better understand the secrets of the world's magic.
Allen picked up that old wand and examined it carefully. The surface of the wand was very smooth, showing no traces of artificial carving.
He then went on to observe the broken end of the wand and still found no traces of carving.
The reason he was so persistent in looking for traces of carving was that the shop had a material room, a micro-carving room, an assembly room, a wand testing room, and a storage room. Allen understood what the other rooms were for, but he could not imagine what the micro-carving room was for.
And the micro-carving room was the room where Mr. Ollivander stayed the longest every day.
So Allen believed that the secrets of the wand must lie in what was carved on the micro-carving.
But reality gave him a slap in the face.
Allen did not feel discouraged by this at all. He continued to carefully observe that wand, and he actually did discover some things.
He discovered that the wand was actually hollow; this hollowness seemed to be to accommodate the wand core.
The diameter of this hollow was extremely small. If this wand had not broken in the middle, Allen would never have discovered this clue.
He carefully followed the wood grain at the broken end of the wand and enlarged the break a bit more.
Now he finally discovered that the inner wall of the hollow wand did not seem smooth; it seemed that something was carved on it...
But the carved things were too small; he could not see clearly what was carved on it at all.
At this moment, he suddenly remembered the Engorgement Charm he learned last year; it seemed very suitable for this scene.
So he cast several Engorgement Charms on the broken wand, and the broken wand became as thick as a small tree trunk.
Allen finally saw clearly the things carved on the inner wall of the wand...
It seems to be some ancient demonic runes...
