Chapter 279: Researching the Patronus Charm

~7 min read 1,201 words

A new day has begun; today Allen discovered his hair was gone, and instead two palm-sized tender sprouts had grown on his head. He was very familiar with these sprouts because two days ago Mr. Scamander's Bowtruckle had wrapped around him all day, and the sprout on the Bowtruckle's head was exactly the same as the sprouts now on his head.

After Allen became an Animagus, he felt the chance of randomly obtaining ordinary animal organs or parts had actually decreased. His talent ability had upgraded a week ago; in that week, only two days yielded ordinary animal organs or parts, while the rest were organs or parts of magical creatures and Pokémon.

Allen did not know whether this was good or bad, but so far the feeling was quite pleasant; every organ or part of a magical creature and Pokémon possessed its own special ability.

As for how it felt to have sprouts growing on his head, Allen could only say his mind had become clearer and his thinking speed had increased slightly.

The Aurors from the Ministry of Magic came to visit them. Regarding news about Sirius Black, the Ministry's reaction speed was always fast, just like when they deducted Allen's various incomes for the next day.

They attached great importance to the news that Sirius Black was an Animagus. To help them search for Black more effectively, Hermione even drew the appearance of that black great dog from that day.

Soon, copies of Hermione's drawing were pasted all over the various entrances of Hogwarts. The Aurors and Dementors conducted a large-scale search of the Forbidden Forest together, which provoked resistance from the centaurs and Acromantulas; it was said the disturbance at the time was very great.

However, Sirius Black seemed to have vanished; after that day, no wizard had seen any trace of him, and no one had seen that suspicious black great dog.

Allen had also been practicing the Patronus Charm recently. His progress was not fast; what he summoned was merely silver smoke. These smokes had no form whatsoever and showed no tendency to take on any form.

This left Allen quite helpless. So on the 10th of this month, after drinking the potion provided by Professor Snape to maintain his body, he specifically transformed into the eyes of a Thunderbird and began to observe the ancient runic parameters generated when casting the Patronus Charm.

There were only a dozen or so ancient runic parameters generated when casting the Patronus Charm, about the same as other basic spells, but Allen discovered several ancient runic parameter keys he did not recognize. To this day, such a situation was rare; one must know his current vocabulary of ancient runes was very large.

He did not stubbornly struggle with those few unrecognized ancient runes. He noticed one parameter called "Activity Level," and he immediately realized this was related to the intensity of the happy emotions when casting the Patronus Charm.

The value corresponding to this "Activity Level" was 3. Allen instantly understood this was a good opportunity to cheat. He could directly change this parameter to the highest level in his Mind Chamber, then cast the Patronus Charm again; wouldn't that allow him to summon a Patronus with a form?

He acted immediately; this was indeed a good opportunity to cheat. He very skillfully changed the Activity Level to 10 in his Mind Chamber, then extracted it into his mind.

He skillfully cast the Patronus Charm, but this time only a wisp of silver smoke appeared. He was instantly stunned. After thinking for a while, he believed the number 10 was too large, so he changed it to 7, but the result was still only summoning a wisp of silver smoke.

Unwilling to give up, he continued to decrease this number, but this time the Patronus Charm failed directly.

He stopped and thought for a long time but still could not figure out the reason. Finally, he simply extracted the memories of these three spell castings from his brain, then carefully examined these memories in his Mind Chamber. Upon looking, he truly discovered some problems.

He discovered that during the first two spell castings, the value corresponding to "Activity Level" in the generated ancient runic parameters was 2, not the 10 and 7 he had modified. The third time was even worse; the value corresponding to "Activity Level" was directly 0.

After seeing this, Allen fell into deep thought. The Patronus Charm was completely different from the other spells he had learned. For other spells, whatever parameters existed in his mind were sent out as those parameters, but the Patronus Charm was different; some of its parameters seemed to be results actively detected, rather than directly transferring the parameters Allen had set in his mind.

Just now, the parameter Allen had set in his mind was 10, but the Activity Level detected by the Patronus Charm was 2, so the sent parameter was 2.

Thinking of this, Allen couldn't help but feel a bit frustrated; wouldn't this mean he could not cheat anymore?

The Patronus truly lived up to its reputation as one of the oldest defensive spells, even possessing such a detection mechanism.

Allen momentarily felt at a loss; it seemed he could only practice steadily and earnestly.

However, Allen also noticed there was another very strange parameter within the Patronus Charm—"Number."

The value corresponding to "Number" was a very long string of ancient runic digits.

This left Allen very puzzled. Having seen the ancient runic parameters of so many spells, this was the first time he had encountered such a strange parameter; most importantly, he could not figure out what this parameter was used for.

When he first cast the Patronus Charm, he had absolutely no thought regarding "Number," yet the "Number" parameter appeared in the ancient runic parameters of the Patronus Charm; this was very strange.

What is this "Number" used for?

Could there be distinctions of identity among Patrons? Are these "Numbers" the "ID numbers" of Patrons? Allen thought somewhat absurdly.

In any case, the observation of the Patronus Charm overturned part of his speculation regarding spell casting in this world.

Next, he attempted to change the value corresponding to "Number." The result was that the value corresponding to "Number" could be modified, but using the modified value to cast the Patronus Charm produced no difference whatsoever; only some silver smoke could be summoned. Changing the value corresponding to "Number" was the same as not changing it.

Now Allen's research into the Patronus Charm suddenly fell into a stalemate. The meaning of the unrecognized ancient runic parameters could not be solved in the short term, cheating by modifying "Activity Level" was impossible, and modifying the "Number" parameter caused no abnormalities.

This made Allen realize he could now only learn and cast the Patronus Charm in the most traditional way taught by Professor Lupin; on this matter, he had to be down-to-earth, with no shortcuts available.

However, this also aroused Allen's interest. For such a magical and strange spell, he would definitely find a way to figure out the principles behind it.
