Chapter 77: Attempt

~6 min read 1,188 words

Early the next morning, Allen formally apologized to Harry and Ron.

Harry and Ron also accepted Allen's apology, and the three were reconciled.

But Allen was vaguely worried; he could still feel the faint desire to inflict cruelty that arose in his heart after casting the Cruciatus Curse, and yesterday that tiny emotion had made him irritable.

It seems I still need to find a way to eliminate this emotion! Allen thought silently.

However, the most important thing today was still to find a way to break the constraints of the Unbreakable Vow.

Regarding this problem, Allen immediately thought of the question Professor Dumbledore had asked him in front of the Mirror of Erised, asking if there was anything Allen wanted to tell him, and saying that whenever he had something to tell him, he could come find him anytime.

As the greatest white wizard of this century, Professor Dumbledore must have many means to help him, and last time his asking him that way must have meant he had discovered something about him.

So regarding the matter of breaking the constraints of the Unbreakable Vow, Allen instantly placed his hope on Professor Dumbledore.

Allen acted immediately, but he didn't know how to contact Professor Dumbledore, so he immediately adjusted his plan: go find Professor McGonagall, hoping to reach Professor Dumbledore through her.

However, today was Sunday, and Allen was a bit worried he wouldn't find her in Professor McGonagall's office.

When he arrived at Professor McGonagall's office, he saw the door was open; Professor McGonagall was busily sorting various documents at her desk. It seemed Professor Dumbledore was very competent as a hands-off headmaster, as Professor McGonagall was working even on the weekend.

Allen walked to the door and knocked. Professor McGonagall raised her head from her papers. Discovering it was Allen, her expression visibly relaxed.

"Mr. Finis, is there something you need?" Her gaze swept over Allen's entire body, finally settling on his ears. "Is there anything abnormal about the ears you transformed today? They seem to be elephant ears?"

Allen did not answer Professor McGonagall's question; he knew the purpose of his visit today.

"Professor, I have something to ask Professor Dumbledore, but I don't know how to contact him, so I came to you," Allen said quickly.

Professor McGonagall's eyebrows furrowed. She looked at Allen with a scrutinizing gaze and said, "What do you need from Professor Dumbledore?"

"I have something important to say to Professor Dumbledore." Allen met Professor McGonagall's gaze with determined eyes.

Professor McGonagall saw the determination in Allen's eyes and said to him, "Headmaster Dumbledore is not at Hogwarts right now..."

Allen was stunned and hurriedly said, "Why isn't he here? When will he be back at school?"

Professor McGonagall said calmly, "You know Professor Dumbledore has many off-campus duties, so he is often not at school. As for when he will return, I don't know either."

"Oh..." Allen sighed in some disappointment.

"If you have something important, you can tell me first." Professor McGonagall also sensed that Allen's mood was off.

This remark reminded Allen: Professor McGonagall is also a powerful wizard; perhaps she has a way to help him.

So Allen immediately changed his mind and decided to seek help from Professor McGonagall.

As for the method of seeking help, he had already thought it out on the way: last time, when testing the Unbreakable Vow in front of Harry, his body had shown many painful symptoms. If he displayed these symptoms in front of Professor McGonagall, the experienced Professor McGonagall would realize he had made an Unbreakable Vow with someone else and could then trace it back to Professor Quirrell.

Allen said to Professor McGonagall, "Watch me carefully!"

Having finished speaking, he prepared to reveal Professor Quirrell's secret, but the moment the thought arose, the omen of death appeared in his heart. He had a vague feeling: if he displayed the symptoms of challenging the constraints of the Unbreakable Vow in front of Professor McGonagall,

he would die immediately.

Allen thought for a moment and understood what was happening: making the Unbreakable Vow was a secret between him and Professor Quirrell, and the vow was to keep secrets; therefore, displaying the symptoms of challenging the constraints of the Unbreakable Vow was actually an act of leaking secrets. So this method would not work.

"What's wrong?" Professor McGonagall asked strangely, seeing Allen remain motionless for so long.

"Professor, wait a moment!" Allen hurriedly said.

He still had a backup plan: he had learned three Dark Arts spells from Professor Quirrell. If he cast even one of them in front of Professor McGonagall, that information alone would be enough; Professor McGonagall could deduce many things from this information.

So Allen drew his wand, intending to cast "Dragon Fire," but the moment he prepared to chant the spell, the chill in his heart appeared again. He vaguely felt that if he cast this spell, he would die instantly.

With the experience from last time, Allen instantly understood what was happening: learning Dark Arts was a secret between him and Professor Quirrell, so the act of casting a spell now was also regarded as an act of leaking secrets.

But what Allen couldn't figure out was why he had been able to cast them normally during his previous practice sessions. Was it simply because he had practiced in places where no one was around?

But by this time, Professor McGonagall's expression had become somewhat displeased. She said in a somewhat stiff tone, "Is this what you intended to show Professor Dumbledore?"

"Professor, it's not what you think!" Allen hurriedly replied.

"If it's not that, then what is it?" Professor McGonagall retorted without hesitation.

"Professor!" Allen opened his mouth to say something, but the chill in his heart kept appearing continuously, preventing him from saying anything. He was very anxious in his heart, but the more anxious he became, the more it triggered the chill in his heart.

After waiting for a while, Professor McGonagall said to Allen in disappointment, "You should go back first. Do not do such things to attract attention again. If there is a next time, I will deduct Gryffindor's house points."

Allen had bitterness in his heart but could not speak it; he had lost his composure.

"Enjoy your Sunday well!" After saying this, Professor McGonagall buried her head in her papers again.

Allen was thus driven out of the office by Professor McGonagall.

Allen walked back somewhat dejected. He now somewhat understood why Professor Quirrell had let him leave so easily yesterday; it turned out he had been acting with impunity! At that time, he had been congratulating himself on his excellent acting, but it seemed Professor Quirrell had already seen through his abnormality.

This thought made the sense of urgency in Allen's heart even more severe; he felt Professor Quirrell was a hunter playing with and toying with his prey.

After thinking for a while at the door of Professor McGonagall's office, Allen decided to return to the Gryffindor tower, calm his mind, and carefully analyze the mechanism of the constraints of the Unbreakable Vow.
