Chapter 65: Uesugi's Promotion

~15 min read 2,868 words

Flowers bloom on two branches, each telling its own story; Uesugi Muneyuki and Ikeda Erena could return to rest after finishing the case, but there were many things for the Metropolitan Police Department to consider.

"Aren't you coming back with us?" The Face of the Metropolitan Police Department, Watanabe Minami, looked at the Okada Keibu beside her in surprise.

"Miki wants to eat Moon Tofu from Zhukai, so I'm going to buy it for her," Okada Police Inspector apologized embarrassedly, "I won't be going back with you all."

"Eh? At this hour?" Watanabe Minami's eyes narrowed slightly, her smile remaining unchanged.

Okada Keibu, full name Okada Masayoshi, was from the Career Track and was considered a family friend of the Watanabe Family; Watanabe Minami had always looked at this family friend, who was a few years older than her, as an older brother.

However, Okada Keibu, who graduated from Keio University, had done something baffling last year—after meeting a female supermarket clerk from Hachioji City while working in the field, he chose to have a whirlwind marriage, which caused quite a stir in high society at the time.

However, she did not say much, instead agreeing to let him go quite readily, and then withdrew with the Metropolitan Police Department's vehicles back to the Sakuradamon headquarters.

It was already past three in the morning, and the Metropolitan Police Department was filled with a joyful atmosphere.

A complete victory!

Superintendent General Watanabe Eiji, who had already prepared bedding to spend the night in his office, sat behind his desk with a smile, listening to the report.

Criminal Investigation Department Chief Mouri and Investigation Division 1 Chief Mikasa stood before the desk, nervous yet excited.

"Well done; the Investigation Division 1 has really saved face for this department today." Watanabe Eiji nodded slowly, a hint of a smile appearing on his dignified and solemn face as he turned the computer monitor on the desk around.

Major news websites, newspapers, and search engines were all about the Fuji TV building lockdown incident; among the top ten, keywords like "Fuji TV Live Broadcast," "Metropolitan Police Department," "Bai Chuan Mai hosting," "Odaiba Building lockdown," "Uesugi Muneyuki," "female anchor corpse discovered," "Judo policewoman," "Arashi no Yama," and "Forensic Pathologist explanation" occupied nine spots.

"This is all thanks to the Director General's swift judgment and effective execution!" Criminal Investigation Department Chief Mouri said with a smile, "If not for your decisive judgment, how could we have achieved such a complete victory? Not only was it solved in one day, but the culprit was caught and even confessed!"

"With this, our Criminal Investigation Department has finally suppressed the Public Security Department; even the National Police Agency and the District Public Prosecutors Office won't have anything to say, right?" Investigation Division 1 Chief Mikasa also responded with a chuckle, "To be honest, the time given by the insurance side was too tight; I thought we were finished at that point."

"Heh, you all should thank Uesugi Muneyuki. If he hadn't found the body, at your rate of searching, it would have been dawn by the time you reached the underground area, right?"

Watanabe Eiji took a document out of his drawer and tossed it at the two men, "Keep this safe; don't let the District Public Prosecutors Office find a loophole."

This document was the official Metropolitan Police Department request to the Tokyo Medical and Dental University Faculty of Medicine for the emergency deployment of Uesugi Muneyuki to assist in the investigation, with both sides' seals stamped on it.

The Criminal Investigation Department Chief and the Investigation Division 1 Chief's eyes flickered, thinking that as expected of the Director General, he was flawless in his work.

"Uesugi Muneyuki and that local Patrol Officer searching for the body on their own was an illegal search; why didn't you report it?" Watanabe Eiji rose from his seat, walked slowly in front of the two with his hands behind his back, "If my daughter hadn't told me about this, it would have been troublesome if the District Public Prosecutors Office made an issue of it later."

"We are sorry!" Department Manager Mouri and Division Chief Mikasa admitted their mistake with sincere conviction; they had indeed wanted to avoid extra trouble, ignoring the issue that Uesugi Muneyuki's search was illegal from the start.

"I have already entrusted the District Public Prosecutors Office, requesting them to show leniency regarding today's events," Watanabe Eiji continued with his hands behind his back.

"Eh?" The two thought, wasn't Uesugi Muneyuki's matter already compliant?

"Because Kashiwagi Jin of the Third Subsection detained the deceased's fiancé, Shimakawa, as a suspect!" Watanabe Eiji stood with his back to his two subordinates, his expression calm and unruffled, "Shimakawa Ren has already contacted the Nishimura Asahi Law Office and united several associations in Minato Ward to prepare a lawyer's letter; it was sent to the Criminal Investigation Department... there was no choice but to request the District Public Prosecutors Office for help."

Hearing the name Nishimura Asahi Law Office, the Criminal Investigation Department Chief and the Investigation Division 1 Chief trembled, pressing their hands down against their trouser seams and bowing thirty degrees in unison.

"Last time, we barely managed to beat the District Public Prosecutors Office thanks to Uesugi Muneyuki, but we had to return the fruits of victory before they were even warm," the Superintendent General said slowly, still with his back to his subordinates.

The two subordinates bent their waists deeper, bowing forty-five degrees, not daring to utter a word.

"Afterward, I will have to bow and scrape, explaining the department's reasons for suspecting him to Shimakawa, as well as to the National Police Agency and the Cabinet. Being detained as a suspect while having lost his fiancée—if Shimakawa publicly attacks this department in the media over this issue, I will have to come forward and apologize publicly."

The two subordinates' waists were already bent to ninety degrees, and they began to break into a sweat.

"Don't think that just because I am from the Criminal Investigation Department, I will unconditionally tolerate the Criminal Investigation Department's methods," Watanabe Eiji raised his voice high but let the matter drop lightly, "Alright, in any case, the Criminal Investigation Department handled today's matter very beautifully, maintaining the department's face and letting all citizens witness the department's capabilities."

"Good work, you two; good work to all members of the First Division." Watanabe Eiji turned around, revealing a smile once again, "This night in the Kanto Region belongs to our Metropolitan Police Department!"

Cheers finally erupted in the room, spreading through the entire floor and then to the whole of Sakuradamon!

This was all thanks to that man, Uesugi Muneyuki!

After the two subordinates exited, Watanabe Eiji began to lay out his bedding; the Superintendent General still had to work tomorrow, so he decided to make do in the office for the night.

"Come in." The door knocked, and Watanabe Eiji didn't even look up.

"Dad." The Face of the Metropolitan Police Department, Watanabe Minami, pushed the door open and entered. She wore a sweet smile, different from her usual image as a Yamato Nadeshiko ice queen, and with quick, small steps, she hurried to her father's side and took the initiative to bow, "Congratulations, Superintendent General Watanabe!"

"Heh, which Superintendent General Watanabe are you congratulating? You little rascal!" Watanabe Eiji had always doted on his daughter, and seeing her so excited, he was also happy, "In any case, there was finally a good result; otherwise, I might have broken the record for the fastest departure of a Superintendent General."

"If you had really let those guys from the First Division keep searching, Father would have had to apologize to the Cabinet by dawn," Watanabe Minami leaned in with a smile, helping Watanabe Eiji lay out the bedding in a very ladylike manner. She didn't speak, but a hidden expectation lurked in her sweet, large eyes, "How about it? Superintendent General Watanabe of the Personnel Division—not worse than Superintendent General Watanabe of the Metropolitan Police Department, right?"

A doting smile appeared on the corner of Watanabe Eiji's mouth as he reached out to ruffle his daughter's hair, "Fine, this time I'll count it as you helping your father—truly helping your father for once."

"Hee hee, then, how does Father plan to handle Uesugi-kun?" Watanabe Minami got the answer she wanted; although it was expected, she couldn't help but reveal a brilliant smile, tilting her head and saying coquettishly, "He is a talent I discovered; Uesugi-kun's on-site autopsy today was super cool!"

"What? Didn't you have no plans to get to know him so soon?" Watanabe Eiji was slightly surprised; the master of Tokyo's eighty thousand police officers truly had no dignity in front of his daughter.

"Plans can't keep up with changes!" Watanabe Minami pouted, "Anyway, he will be brought into the department sooner or later; I communicated with him, and he agreed."

"Yes, so you're proud of yourself, Keibu Watanabe," Watanabe Eiji teased his daughter.

"I am not!" Watanabe Minami helped her father finish the bed and sat down, her small hands cupping her cheeks, "Then, how does Father plan to arrange for Uesugi-kun to enter the Metropolitan Police Department?"

"Hmm... let's give him a part-time position as a Field Consultant in the Metropolitan Police Department's Forensics Division; the salary will be paid according to the Tokyo minimum wage standard," Watanabe Eiji thought for a moment and gave his opinion.

"That's too stingy!" Watanabe Minami pouted, "Uesugi-kun helped you, me, and the entire Metropolitan Police Department!"

"Don't be ridiculous! Minami, Uesugi Muneyuki already draws two salaries. Tokyo Medical and Dental University gives him a fixed monthly salary of 280,000 yen, and the Metropolitan Police Department will give him another 150,000 in minimum salary. He also performs autopsies for local branches, earning at least 300,000 a month from that. You calculate it—after taxes and the three insurances (National Pension, Welfare Pension, Corporate Pension), his take-home pay is already close to 600,000 yen per month, which is higher than yours!"

Watanabe Eiji was both annoyed and amused, "This kid's illegal search forced us to clean up his mess, and now you're still pleading for him?"

"But he really is amazing!" the Face of the Metropolitan Police Department muttered, "Compared to him, those in the Forensics Division seem like people from Kanagawa."

"That, indeed." Watanabe Eiji had also watched the live broadcast and had nothing to say about Uesugi Muneyuki's autopsy skills, but Uesugi Muneyuki himself was not in the system; he was a Regular Employee physician at a hospital. Although the Superintendent General was high-ranking, he could not manage Uesugi Muneyuki himself, "In any case, handle it this way for now. This way, those inside the department and those on the other side will have nothing to say, and in the future, the department can rightfully call on him to assist in investigations, and this kid won't have any more illegal search situations."

"Then... in the future, how about I represent the department as the contact for Uesugi's matters?" Watanabe Minami pursed her lips and asked tentatively.

"That should be the case."

Having received her father's consent, Watanabe Minami was satisfied.

Watching the Face of the Metropolitan Police Department, as elegant and beautiful as a butterfly in the room, a hint of regret appeared on Watanabe Eiji's face. He was already fifty years old and had only this one daughter in his life.

Watanabe Minami was excellent in every sense; if she were a boy, perhaps the joke of "Superintendent General Watanabe" could really come true.

It was a pity she was a girl; in this country, a powerful family must be supported by men.

Hmm?

A strange thought suddenly popped into Watanabe Eiji's mind.

————I am the divider line for strange thoughts————

At ten-thirty the next morning, Uesugi Muneyuki woke up from the bed in his student apartment; he ignored the obvious bulge on the quilt, picked up his phone, and felt a tremor in his heart.

They were all missed calls.

Damn it, I slept too soundly last night; my power was first overused, and then I was stuffed full of Hironaka Mariko's soul, leaving me in a state of both agitation and exhaustion, unable to wake up at all.

Now that he was awake, Uesugi Muneyuki only felt a crazy urge to find someone to Princess Connect with.

I triggered the Death Soul Contract twice in a row yesterday; the aftereffects are too strong!

Swaying as he went to wash up, Uesugi Muneyuki checked the types of missed calls while brushing his teeth, first dialing his father, Uesugi Hironori.

Uesugi Hironori answered almost instantly.

His father first congratulated his son on his great achievement, telling Uesugi Muneyuki that the main family had all watched this Live Broadcast and were all proud of Uesugi Muneyuki.

"You're a big name now! The internet and the news are all talking about how you are worthy of being a descendant of Lord Kenshin! Haha!" His father's proud and arrogant voice came through the phone: "Yonezawa Uesugi Washiroku, officially serialized!"

Uesugi Muneyuki smiled.

The status of Peerage was considered a noble family eighty to one hundred and fifty years ago, but after the war, the entire Peerage system had long since been smashed to pieces by Five-Star MacArthur; it was only because they, as descendants of Daimyo and Feudal Lords, were tied to local historical figures and culture and held some real estate that some still lived well and could call themselves a Noble, but in reality, they had truly fallen, and not only did they lack an aura, they might even become a laughingstock of society.

"Alright, Yukimatsumaru, as for empty titles, Dad will help you cash them in." Hearing that his son did not respond, Uesugi Hironori knew he didn't care much about this, so he continued: "I have already discussed it with that old guy Ukai, Yukimatsumaru, you are going to be promoted!"

"What?!" Uesugi Muneyuki was stunned.

Can one even be promoted for this?

Uesugi Muneyuki was currently a student physician at the Medical and Dental University in Tokyo, but he had already passed his qualification exams and had entered the Forensic Pathology Department as an intern in the capacity of a junior resident physician.

Due to the previous attack incident, plus the fact that no one was willing to work as a Forensic Pathologist, Uesugi Muneyuki's two-year internship Peer Review was directly shortened to three months; he was now a formally licensed physician, and although he still held a junior title, he was already a Regular Employee, a level known as a "Certified Physician."

If one were to rise further, that would be a "Specialized Physician," at which point one would have the qualification to prescribe independently; rising further from "Specialized Physician" and passing medical exams would allow one to be promoted to a "Specialist Physician," at which level one could obtain the qualification of an Attending Physician.

In Japan, once one reached the level of Attending Physician, the annual salary basically exceeded ten million (though one's hair would also basically not have much left).

Further up was the "Instructor Physician," which was the so-called "Professor"; reaching this level meant one was qualified to lead students and preside over major projects, serving as the "head" of a medical department, such as Professor Zaizen of the First Surgery Department, or Uesugi Muneyuki's mentor, Professor Okochi.

I haven't even graduated yet, and I'm going to be promoted to a Specialized Physician?

"But you won't graduate until next April, right." Sure enough, Uesugi Hironori said: "So I discussed it with Dean Ukai; once you graduate and get your license next April, the Medical and Dental University in Tokyo will immediately promote you to a Specialized Physician."

I suppose that's a good thing, Uesugi Muneyuki twitched the corner of his mouth; in his line of work, absolutely no one competed with him.

"Oh right, oh right, there is one more important thing I need to tell you." Uesugi Hironori said triumphantly: "Yukimatsumaru, it's about time you moved out of that student apartment."

"Huh?"

"I'm serious, Yukimatsumaru, you are graduating next April and are also going to be promoted to a Specialized Physician; what is the point of still living in a student apartment?!" Uesugi Hironori's words carried an unquestionable decisiveness: "You are a celebrity now; you should have matching living conditions."

"The main family happens to have a lease on a Tower Mansion in Bunkyo Ward that is expiring, so you can live there; get ready to move in these next few days."

After speaking with his father for a few moments, Uesugi Muneyuki put down the phone and looked back with some nostalgia at the student apartment where he had lived for more than four years.

Moving to a new home?

Regarding the physician levels and medical system in Japan, I consulted a medical student with experience studying in Japan, but it may not be completely accurate and might be slightly outdated; I hope everyone can be a little tolerant, as it is too complex and I assume everyone has no interest in reading a long-winded explanation.
