Chapter 75: Your partner is truly amazing, she's mine now!
"If you want to do it, you must do it quickly."
Watanabe Eiji looked at his daughter, who was dressed in casual clothes, with a serious expression: "I have finally managed to secure this position, so while I still can, and since you have already brought the person in, you must act as soon as possible."
The sweet and charming Miss Minami fell into silence at once.
Relying on the Fuji TV Case, Watanabe Eiji had managed to secure his position as Superintendent General.
But at this point, more than three months had already passed since he took office; calculated based on a two-and-a-half-year term for a Superintendent General, nearly one-tenth had already gone by.
Not to mention that many Superintendents General do not even sit for two years before receiving orders to transfer elsewhere, and they do not necessarily finish a full term.
The Japanese system has a characteristic: for any very important official post, everyone will fight tooth and nail to compete for it, but once they actually attain it, they will hurry to resign after sitting for a short while, and it is often a voluntary resignation.
Because sitting in the position means bearing responsibility, whereas once you step down, you can enjoy the perks of the position without having to bear the responsibility.
This sort of thing appeared very early in Japanese history, known as the "Seke Insei."
This matter is very complex to explain; the most concise way to put it is that around 850-880 AD, the imperial power fell into the hands of the Fujiwara clan amidst repeated internal strife and changes in the throne. Afterward, the Fujiwara clan began to hold the post of "Kanpaku" for generations, controlling the court by sending their daughters into the palace to be Empresses, and fixing the rule that the Emperor could not directly administer government through law.
Naturally, the Emperors were not content with the loss of power, so they invented "Insei," where a vigorous Emperor would voluntarily abdicate and become a monk, using the status of "Retired Emperor" to bypass the established law that "the Emperor may not directly hold power" and control the authority.
Later, this became a convention. After the era of Insei ended, Minamoto no Yoritomo created the Kamakura Shogunate, but he did not touch the Emperor; instead, he took a detour to do things his own way, starting a new stove by assuming the title of "Seii Taishōgun," using the Shogunate regime to replace the Seke Insei and becoming the actual ruler of the country (the Minamoto no Yoritomo generations were still just regional regimes; only after the Jōkyū War did the Shogunate completely control the whole country).
The Hōjō clan usurped Minamoto no Yoritomo's regime, causing the bloodline of Minamoto no Yoritomo to be cut off after three generations, and they would rather invite a "Seke Shōgun (of Court Noble origin)" or a "Miya Shōgun (of imperial family descent)" to be a puppet than stand at the forefront themselves.
By the time of the Muromachi Shogunate, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu also voluntarily abdicated while in his prime, manipulating the court from behind the scenes as a "Cloistered Emperor."
Toyotomi Hideyoshi served as Kanpaku for 5 years before yielding the position to his nephew Toyotomi Hidetsugu and calling himself "Taikō"; Tokugawa Ieyasu served as Seii Taishōgun for two years before passing the position to Tokugawa Hidetada and calling himself "Ōgosho." They all lived in seclusion behind the scenes but firmly controlled the actual power.
History has similar traditions.
The post of Superintendent General has always had a strong flavor of "dividing the pork." Out of respect, most Superintendents General, even if they are just here to gild their resumes, will serve at least one year, but what happens after that is hard to say.
Watanabe Eiji has now firmly secured this position by virtue of the Fuji TV Case, becoming a Superintendent with real power in the true sense, but he cannot be sure what will happen later. His meaning is: while he is still in office, while he is still a Superintendent with real power, hurry up and get things done.
"The previous merit gave us an excuse to get him into the Metropolitan Police Department; we always need the next important event to provide a sufficient reason." Watanabe Minami's reply was slightly conservative: "Besides, seeing is believing. I haven't spent much time with him yet, so let's spend more time together. I also want to see for myself."
"Heh, I actually think that if you two keep spending time together, the matter might already be done," Watanabe Eiji said with a double entendre.
"Dad!" Miss Minami understood her father's implication and blushed as she chided: "What are you saying! If you say that again, I'm leaving. Today was supposed to be my day off! Isn't this all for your own good?"
Watanabe Eiji's eyes flickered, and after thinking for a moment, he did not continue.
After a while, Uesugi Muneyuki arrived. Seeing the middle-aged man with Watanabe Minami, he was slightly stunned, then bowed slightly without hesitation.
"Superintendent Watanabe, Miss Watanabe Minami."
Watanabe Eiji had a serious appearance, a tall and sturdy build, and was powerful. His many years of police career had accumulated an indescribable prestige and sense of majesty for him, to the point that his whole body exuded a sharp aura.
Facing Uesugi Muneyuki's greeting, he only nodded slightly: "Sit."
The three of them sat down separately.
"Thank you for the previous Fuji TV matter," Watanabe Eiji took the initiative to speak.
"It is my honor. Miss Watanabe has already thanked me before; I should be the one thanking the Metropolitan Police Department for being willing to give me this opportunity." Uesugi Muneyuki kept his posture very low, but his tone was very confident, and he looked directly, not fearing this master of the eighty thousand police in Tokyo at all.
"Michiko and your mother have been old friends for many years; you can call me Uncle directly." Watanabe Eiji was very satisfied with his first impression of Uesugi Muneyuki: "Minami, make tea."
"Yes." Watanabe Minami stood up, warmed the bowl, added tea, and whisked the tea, fully displaying the demeanor of a young lady from a noble family.
At the beginning, neither side spoke until Miss Minami delivered the tea bowl to Uesugi Muneyuki. The man took a small sip: "Asakusa Tea Ceremony, hmm, it's Hoshino Yame from Kyoto. The taste is slightly thick with a floral fragrance. Does Superintendent Watanabe like this flavor?"
"Oh? Uesugi-kun also has research in this field?" Watanabe Eiji's eyes lit up.
Once the topic was opened, the atmosphere in the office immediately became lively. Uesugi Muneyuki was like a treasure vault; opening it just a little allowed Watanabe Eiji and Watanabe Minami to witness the depth of a thousand-year-old Noble family.
And Uesugi Muneyuki was indeed very good at chatting with the older generation or the previous generation.
Because he was a transmigrator, because he had lived two lives, Uesugi Muneyuki found that chatting with the older generation was also quite interesting as he grew older and felt the sense of identity displacement.
Those outdated boasts, those ancient jokes, their old-fashioned experiences, will appear again before the next generation at some point in one's own future.
It is very cruel, and also very real. The generation gap is just an excuse; communication between generations requires a cost, and when you refuse to pay the cost, at some point, you will find that the elders who were willing to boast and laugh with you are gradually leaving, and you won't be able to hear them even if you want to.
So sometimes, it is better to put down your pride and try to understand the world of the older generation.
Watanabe Eiji's gaze was full of scrutiny at first. After chatting for a while, this gaze turned into surprise. After chatting for a while more, his expression was already very gratified and moved. He couldn't stop chatting with Uesugi Muneyuki, from Ultraman to Nintendo, from Tezuka Osamu to Toriyama Akira, from "Azuma Kagami" to "The Tale of Genji," from the Tokyo Olympics to the Asama-Sansō incident, and then from "The Dancing Girl of Izu" to "Flowers and Snakes."
The more the two men chatted, the brighter the smile on Watanabe Minami, who was on the side. Although she didn't speak much, she liked this scene very much; it was like a home, with the warmth of life.
They chatted for more than half an hour, until both of them were thirsty.
"Do you usually chat with Yūken like this at home?" Watanabe Eiji asked with great interest.
"Communication between father and son is always silent," Uesugi Muneyuki replied.
"Oh? I heard he is quite noisy usually," Watanabe Eiji laughed: "Shouting things like 'this is my son' while clutching that crocodile-skin bag of his."
"That's in front of people. In private, Father is still relatively restrained," Uesugi Muneyuki said with a slightly sarcastic tone: "He doesn't act at home; he says it's a bit embarrassing."
"Hahahahaha!" Watanabe Eiji laughed out loud.
A certain idea became even stronger in his mind.
If nothing else, this kid has a good appearance, good eloquence, and a wide range of knowledge; taking him out would definitely be very prestigious!
And he is a second son!
In such a family, isn't the second son just meant to be sold?
"I am very much looking forward to your performance next, Uesugi-kun. Please treat me well. If there is anything, you can come to me directly, or you can have Minami convey it for you."
"Please rest assured, Uncle Watanabe. There will definitely be no shortage of things to trouble you with in the future," Uesugi Muneyuki was very direct: "I will cause you trouble."
"Hahahaha~"
…………
That day, after Uesugi Muneyuki became a familiar face at the Metropolitan Police Department and met several important figures, he went home to rest.
Likewise, it was Watanabe Minami's day off. Having completed the introduction work, successfully incorporating Uesugi Muneyuki into her faction, and introducing him to her father to win an unexpected joy, Watanabe Minami was in a very pleasant mood until the driver drove the car into a Villa.
In the Setagaya Gotokuji area of Tokyo, a quiet place far from the hustle and bustle, one can enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom throughout the temple in spring, and it is the best place to view the beautiful red leaves in autumn.
Miss Minami's home is right here. The mansion, covering an area of over six hundred square meters, is in no way inferior to the Uesugi Hall in Bunkyo Ward, and it is even better in terms of decoration.
Generally speaking, a purely Japanese-style villa is called a "Japanese-style Courtyard." Most of these were built during the Edo Period. They look beautiful, but they are actually not comfortable to live in, especially since the installation of water and electricity is difficult to handle, and old-fashioned wooden structures also have the risk of fire. In fact, they are not very comfortable to live in, and they require constant repairs year after year.
Then there is the villa like Uesugi Hall, generally referred to as a—Garden Western-style House, a typical style of Taisho Romanticism, possessing both European luxury and elegance alongside Japanese tranquility and subtlety; in this era, there is generally electricity and water, and many Garden Western-style Houses are intangible cultural heritage sites.
As for the home where Watanabe Minami lives, it is in a completely European style; this kind of high-end villa is generally referred to as a—Villa.
Taking off her High-heeled Shoe, Minami said a word to her mother and returned to her room to take off her casual clothes, peeling the black silk stockings bit by bit from her toes, preparing to bathe.
In the bathtub, the fair skin of the young lady Minami shimmered with a moving radiance like white jade under the light of the bathroom heater, her petite yet incomparably symmetrical golden curves running from top to bottom, sweeping past her flat abdomen, displaying the temperament of a Showa-style static glass beauty to the fullest.
Hot water sprinkled down, the rising misty vapor turning into white silk stained with rosy clouds; Watanabe Minami tilted her head back against the bathtub, closing her eyes to enjoy the brief comfort.
Recalling today, she felt a bit dazed for a moment.
So, does this count as a done deal?
From now on, Uesugi Muneyuki is her person!
Hee hee hee hee heh heh heh heh heh~
The Showa-style static beauty revealed a smile like a lovesick woman, which ruined her temperament, but was all the more real.
Her fists clenched tightly, a trace of satisfaction flashing through her sweet black eyes; that Uesugi Muneyuki got along so well with her father was truly an unexpected joy, and also something she had absolutely not anticipated.
Her choice was correct!
This is the Partner I wanted!
Sorry, Ikeda, your Partner is truly great, but now, he is mine!
Although traditional detached houses and villas are both single-family homes, in reality, the gap between them is still quite large; most townhouses and semi-detached villas in the country are only at the level of a detached house.
