Chapter 78: Making a Cart
Time always flies by, and before we knew it, the tribal gathering hosted by the Tiger Tribe this year was already drawing to a close.
At this point, everyone who had come to the tribal gathering had sold off everything they brought, and they also bought plenty of things they needed at the gathering; of course, Zhang Fan and his companions were no exception.
Zhang Fan and Fei Er took the opportunity while Ba Ke Er and Mo De went out hunting to each check the items in their own tents, only then realizing that, without noticing, they had already bought so much stuff. Seeing all these things, both of them began to worry.
"Fan Fan, what should we do? It seems we bought a bit too much, huh? Wah-wah-wah, it would be a shame if we couldn't take them away! These are all my treasures!"
"Yeah, it would be a real pity if we couldn't take them! We barely managed to buy all this stuff! Look at all this food and these supplies. Ah! I suddenly regret buying so much—what should we do?"
At that moment, Ba Ke Er and Mo De, who had already returned with their game, had walked up behind Zhang Fan and Fei Er without either of them noticing.
"What's wrong, Fan Fan? Are you worried we can't take these things? Don't worry, there's definitely a way to bring them along. Even if I have to crawl, I'll help you bring everything back to the tribe."
Hearing Ba Ke Er's words, Zhang Fan suddenly thought of a solution.
"Ba Ke Er, I've just thought of an idea: we can make a cart out of wood, then go catch a few livestock to pull it. That way we can drive the cart back to the tribe, right? The only downside is that it might take us longer to get back."
"That's fine; we can just treat it as an outing. Besides, Father and Am are looking after things at home, so coming back a bit later is no problem."
Fei Er, standing aside, saw Zhang Fan and Ba Ke Er preparing to drive that whatever cart back to the tribe, and he also felt tempted.
"Um, Fan Fan, can Mo De and I join you? I also have a lot of stuff—it would be a real shame if we couldn't take it! Please! Please!"
Zhang Fan watched Fei Er launch another round of his cute offensive, and he found it hard to resist—after all, he had already planned to let Fei Er and Mo De come along; having Fei Er, this lively treasure, along the way would be so much fun!
"Fei Er, if you weren't coming along, this journey would be so boring! Hahaha!"
"That's great, but Fan Fan, how exactly do you make this cart?"
Ba Ke Er and Mo De had wanted to ask that very question; seeing Fei Er ask it, they both silently perked up their ears to listen.
"This cart—it's not hard to say it's difficult, nor easy to say it's simple. The hard part is making neat wheels and planks and then fitting them together. The easy part is that the materials are simple; you just need wood. Coincidentally, Ba Ke Er and Mo De's woodworking skills are still decent."
After hearing Zhang Fan finish, Ba Ke Er and Mo De began to feel restless, wishing they could immediately make a cart so their females could bring along their favorite things.
Zhang Fan and Fei Er saw how much Ba Ke Er and Mo De cared, and they felt happy, but they couldn't let them go just yet. Come on! It's mealtime—if we don't stay to cook, where are you thinking of running off to?
After learning Zhang Fan and Fei Er's thoughts, the two male beastmen realized their reaction had been a bit over the top, so they obediently stayed behind to cook with Zhang Fan and the others.
After lunch, Zhang Fan and Fei Er saw that the two male beastmen were eager to go find wood. They didn't let them stay to clean up; instead, they waved a hand and sent them off with their logging tools. The remaining tasks were taken care of by Zhang Fan and Fei Er.
After Ba Ke Er and Mo De transformed into their beast forms, they couldn't wait to spread their wings and fly toward the forest.
Not long after, they reached the forest's edge. As soon as they landed, they immediately folded their wings and ran into the part of the forest where the trees were thicker and more vigorous.
Having arrived at the spot, Ba Ke Er and Mo De changed back to human form and began looking around for trees of suitable size that would be easy to transport back.
After searching for a while, they finally found a large tree that met the criteria. Having chosen it, they took out the logging tools they had brought and began to fell the tree with force.
After the tree was cut down, the two didn't rush to haul it away; instead, they stripped the bark in the forest, then jointly carried the large tree toward the Tiger Tribe's encampment.
Upon arriving at the encampment, they saw that Zhang Fan and Fei Er had already borrowed the tools needed for woodworking. At that moment they realized that, because they had been so excited, they had forgotten the most important thing—how could they do woodworking without tools? Or perhaps their dear ones had thought of everything ahead of time!
The tools were ready, and the timber had been hauled back.
Zhang Fan also took out the sketch of the cart he had drawn on animal hide while Ba Ke Er and Mo De were away cutting trees.
Ba Ke Er and Mo De, upon seeing the drawing, couldn't help but exclaim in admiration!
"Fan Fan, this cart is really wonderful! I just don't know how long it will take to make it like this—this is our first time building a cart, and I don't know if we can make it exactly as you want."
"That's fine, Ba Ke Er; as long as it works when it's done, it doesn't need to be fancy—just sturdy."
"If that's the case, then Fan Fan, rest assured—I will do my best to make it well!"
Having said that, Ba Ke Er and Mo De began using tools to cut the wood, making the cart's parts and planks. Because many components are needed and there are no iron nails available now, all the parts must be joined using the most primitive mortise-and-tenon joints. Therefore, building a cart now takes longer than if we used nails to assemble it.
After Ba Ke Er and Mo De toiled day and night for several days, the first cart on the Beastmen Planet was finally completed.
Zhang Fan looked at this cart and couldn't help but feel a myriad of emotions. He also gave praise to Ba Ke Er and Mo De's craftsmanship. Honestly, the cart they made turned out far better than he had imagined.
After receiving Zhang Fan's praise, Ba Ke Er worked even harder and soon produced a second cart. Fei Er looked at the two carts, compared them, and found that although the second cart took less time to make, it was actually better than the first. Puzzled, he asked Zhang Fan, who explained that it was simply a matter of experience: the first time building a cart, the two males had no experience, so their cart was the result of gradual trial and error; the second cart benefited from that first experience, allowing them to gradually correct the shortcomings they had noticed and remake it. Naturally, it turned out different.
