Chapter 364: God's Inaction Equals Consent
Yu Lin walks on a dust‑filled road, and at the far end of his sight a city's outline appears.
As he draws nearer, the scene inside the city becomes clearer—its architecture and level of development resemble those of the era of Jesus he once visited, but the order is far more chaotic.
On the streets, fighting figures are everywhere, the dull thuds of fists hitting flesh and shouts never cease.
A few rag‑clad people just burst out of a stone house, clutching looted pottery jars and cloth, their faces bearing manic smiles. Calling this a city of sin is no exaggeration.
Worth noting, people of this age seem to still retain the lingering glow of the ancestral bloodline. Passersby are all robust and muscular, and the physiques of those bandits earlier are here the norm.
Even more surprising is their lifespan; the average longevity is great, Yu Lin senses a bit, and the oldest one is already four hundred years old!
Occasionally one can see giants taller than two‑and‑a‑half meters; these massive beings charge through the streets, pedestrians step aside, clearly possessing tremendous combat power.
Yu Lin enters the city; his Eastern features and finely crafted clothing immediately draw attention.
Countless gazes linger on him, with scrutiny and greed, yet no one steps forward—for a lone foreigner in this city, one is usually either a fat lamb or a hard target.
At that moment, a young man of about twenty smiles and comes close, flashing a set of yellow teeth: "Buddy, I'm Luoer, what's your name?"
"Looking at your looks, you're not from here, right? Where are you from?"
He deftly dodges a pottery jar that rolls from a corner, and continues laughing: "Need a guide?"
Yu Lin sizes up the clever youngster, smiles faintly: "I'm Yu Lin."
"As for where I'm from, I won't tell you that."
He changes tack, "What price do you charge for guiding?"
Luoer's eyes brighten, he raises a finger: "One silver piece!"
He adds, pointing to his fingernail: "That much is fine."
Though he doesn't yet know the value of the currency, to Yu Lin it makes no difference.
He casually pulls a silver coin from his pocket:
"Is that okay?"
"Hmm?" Luoer takes the silver, looks at its glitter, skeptically puts it in his mouth, bites, then licks it, immediately showing a delighted expression:
"It's fine, fine! So pure!"
"The purity is unbelievable!"
He leans in, lowers his voice:
"Yu Lin, where did you get this grade of goods?"
Yu Lin gives no answer, just walks forward.
Seeing he doesn't answer, Luoer, being considerate, stops probing, strides to Yu Lin's side and points ahead: "That's our market over there; you'd better be careful, the city's gotten even messier lately, especially at night......"
He speaks while deftly guiding Yu Lin around a group of brawling strongmen, already accustomed to the city's chaos.
Yu Lin listens to Luoer's complaints about the declining times, then suddenly asks: "Why is the city so chaotic?"
He scans the street where a new fight has just broken out: "Is it just here, or everywhere?"
His gaze returns to Luoer:
"And besides, you seem pretty normal."
For his few questions that hit the core, Luoer doesn't hide anything, but shrugs helplessly, his tone tinged with a world‑worn numbness: "Growing crops takes months, even a year, and you still have to worry about natural disasters; a mistimed heavy rain can ruin the harvest, leaving the whole family starving."
He shifts his tone, raises a finger, a flash of complex emotion in his eyes.
"But robbery? One night!"
He emphasizes: "Just one night, and all the labor of a year or more becomes yours! How 'profitable' is that?"
"It's not only here," Luoer says confidently, "everywhere is like this!"
He lifts his hand and points to the sky, his voice carrying a hint of calm: "And look, God never steps in to stop or scold this behavior, what does that show?"
"It shows the behavior is tacitly approved, not despised."
Then he lowers his voice further, almost whispering: "Think, back then the ancestor Cain killed Abel… uh, never mind."
He doesn't finish the sentence, as if touching an ancient taboo, abruptly cuts off, shakes his head, and quickly changes the subject: "As for me? I just look normal."
"Maybe one day I'll also succumb to temptation, or join them just to survive."
"Future's uncertain, who can say?"
He shrugs again, putting on a nonchalant, indifferent air.
Yu Lin nods slightly, indicating he understands, and stops probing.
His gaze shifts to the noisy market; looking closely, aside from a few handcrafted items, the food stalls truly offer only various vegetables and berries, with no trace of meat at all.
"You don't eat meat?"
"No," Luoer replies curtly, as if it's a matter of course: "God only gave us the right to eat plants,"
He points at the green produce on the stall: "He never gave us the right to eat meat."
He pauses, as if finding another piece of evidence, his tone a bit self‑deprecating:
"So you see, when evil and robbery happen, God doesn't stop it, that means tacit approval."
"And if eating meat is forbidden, then it's absolutely off‑limits."
Yu Lin nods again, then asks: "Don't you ever think that God is just not acting yet?"
Luoer nods: "Of course I do."
"So I try to curb myself, surviving by my own wits and strength."
"You're clever." Yu Lin nods.
He does start to like this guy a bit.
As long as Luoer can keep it up.
When the time comes......
"Hey! Luoer, where did you get the fat lamb?"
Supplement: God, in Genesis chapter nine—after the Great Hong Flood ended—granted the right to eat meat to humanity.
"All living animals may be your food; I give you all these, just as I previously gave you vegetables; any living thing, the blooded meat, you shall not eat; moreover, I will demand repayment of the blood debt that harms your lives: from all beasts, from humans, from those who are brothers, I will demand lives. Whoever sheds human blood, his blood shall also be shed by man, because man is made in the image of the Lord."
