Chapter 527: A Bunch of Guys
The sedan moves slowly along the highway, its wheels grinding the road and producing a steady rustling sound.
Outside the window stretches an endless flat plain, occasionally dotted with patches of farmland, a few solitary gas stations, and the identical green road signs that extend endlessly on both sides of the highway.
The sun has risen, and sunlight streams through the windshield into the cabin, warming the whole interior.
The direction of travel is toward Washington District.
Its full name is Washington Columbia District.
Mei Li Jian's capital.
It is named after the first president George Washington, who chopped down the cherry tree.
It is a district not belonging to any state, directly administered by Congress—a place that theoretically represents the whole nation but in practice fits uneasily with any state.
The driver is Su Shan Na.
Su Shan Na's both hands grip the steering wheel, her posture relaxed yet focused, her jade‑green eyes occasionally glancing at the rearview mirror and scanning the road ahead.
Her profile, softened by the sunlight, makes it hard to associate her with the role of "Lafeier‑chosen human messenger."
Yu Lin sits in the passenger seat, propping his chin with one hand, watching the scenery rush backward outside the window.
"So, what exactly are you taking me to do? I'm busy."
Su Shan Na does not answer immediately.
She remains silent for a few seconds, as if gathering her words.
"Do you still remember," she finally says, in a soft voice:
"The matters involving Arthur King some time ago? Those guys who acted."
Yu Lin raises an eyebrow, turning his head to look at her.
"What? You mean the things I'm doing now, they've also gotten involved in?"
Su Shan Na nods.
"That's how it is," she says:
"To be precise—"
She steers the car slowly toward the roadside and stops in front of a gas station.
The wheels come to a very steady halt, exactly the same as when they stopped in front of Yu Lin this morning.
She turns sideways, facing Yu Lin, a trace of solemnity appearing in her jade‑green eyes.
"They occupy a fairly large portion."
Yu Lin says nothing, waiting for her to continue.
"Their people," Su Shan Na continues, explaining:
"have infiltrated both the Democratic and Republican parties."
"They wouldn't directly partake in issuing or drafting laws; that would be too conspicuous and leave easy evidence."
"They simply…" she pauses, as if searching for the right word:
"quietly push a lever."
"Sometimes it's good," she continues, "sometimes it's bad, but the bad outnumbers the good."
"After all, laboring through countless hardships to plot terror, losing this and that, and constantly fearing capture—direct infiltration is far more convenient."
"Issuing a law that looks fine but actually lets society rot gradually,"
"it's simple, and they can profit from it, strengthening themselves."
Yu Lin listens, his face showing little change.
He merely nods slightly, then asks back:
"Don't you know who is behind them?"
Su Shan Na nods.
"Of course I know, Lafeier Revelation to me."
She pauses, a flash of complex emotion passing through her jade‑green eyes.
"But I cannot let Him succeed."
Yu Lin raises an eyebrow.
Su Shan Na lowers her head, looking at her hand resting on the steering wheel.
Her voice becomes softer:
"After all… I'm not sure whether I can, like Noah, board that ship heading to the New Era."
She lifts her head, looking at Yu Lin.
"Our Lord loves us; He will discern who is good, who is evil, who receives blessings, and who goes to Hell."
"But that one's methods…"
She does not finish.
But the look in her eyes at Yu Lin already says the rest for her.
"It's too extreme, like… like…"
She does not continue the topic.
She shakes her head, as if trying to shake something from her mind.
Then she changes the subject, her tone becoming resolute again:
"So, I will help you find them, along with those villains as well."
She looks at Yu Lin, her jade‑green eyes full of seriousness.
"Innocent people, good people, must not, and should not, be implicated by them."
"You agree, right?"
"This is unfair."
After saying that, she pushed open the car door and got out.
Yu Lin watched her walk toward the fuel pump.
In Mei Li Jian, most gas stations require you to do everything yourself—park, insert the card, select the fuel grade, lift the nozzle, pump, then replace the nozzle—a full process that a practiced person finishes in two minutes.
Only New Jersey and Oregon mandate that staff must operate the pump.
Su Shan Na's movements were very smooth.
Insert the card, select the fuel, lift the nozzle—her motions were fluid.
Yu Lin withdrew his gaze.
He thought for a moment, then fished his phone out of his pocket.
Hmm, it wasn't really a call.
But as long as he "dialed," the other side would be able to pick up.
The line connected.
There was a one‑second silence on the other end.
"Hello," Yu Lin said.
"What's the matter?"
"Your subordinates are quite dishonest."
"I know; I'm watching them."
Yu Lin stayed silent, waiting for him to continue.
"Those who defy what I said," the voice said, "and those who don't obey must also be washed."
He paused briefly.
"I only love those who obey me."
Yu Lin listened, fell silent for two seconds, then twitched the corner of his mouth.
"Fine, you say that just like God."
God is exactly like that.
Those who obey Him, who heed His words, He loves them; but if you truly anger Him, just wait for the Great Flood and the heavenly fire! Whether you live or die will be the end.
Still, Divine Jesus was always aligning with God; it was only Yu Lin's Hope Spark that added a touch of humanity to Him.
Where would anyone discuss with Yu Lin and then act like that?
It would just be the Great Flood arriving!
Yu Lin changed the subject, with a hint of amusement:
"You didn't say earlier because you wanted me to act, you're just watching the drama, right?"
The other end was silent.
"Why are you silent now?"
Silence again.
Yu Lin waited three seconds, then sighed helplessly.
"Fine, if you won't speak, I'll hang up."
He pressed the end button on the "call."
At that moment, Su Shan Na finished refueling, opened her car door, and stepped inside.
She glanced at the phone in Yu Lin's hand, said nothing, simply buckled her seatbelt and restarted the car.
The engine purred low as the sedan pulled out of the station, merging back into the traffic.
The sunlight remained bright, bathing the two of them in a warm glow.
Yu Lin slipped the phone back into his pocket, watching the scenery rush past the window.
Washington, D. C. was still ahead.
"Hello, Su Shan Na."
"What's up?"
"Drive straight to the White House."
"Huh? Why?"
"You'll find out soon enough."
