Chapter 638: What on Earth Are You Trying to Do?

~6 min read 1,153 words

Yu Lin stood at the doorway, watching the shattered starlight fade into the night.

The moon still hung at the zenith, the stars still shone, and the wind still blew.

He stood for a while, then turned to leave.

"Yu Lin."

He halted his steps.

A voice came from behind, light, with a hint of a just‑woken hoarseness and an indefinable clarity.

Yu Lin turned his head.

Ying Ge stood at the doorway, barefoot, wearing that new garment, its sleeves still rolled up twice, its collar still wide.

She stood in the moonlight, her shadow trailing behind her, very, very long.

Her eyes stared unblinking at Yu Lin, those eyes shining unnaturally in the moonlight, not like a just‑woken child.

Yu Lin looked at her, without surprise on his face.

He had long noticed it, from Ying Ge's first turn over, from the change in her breathing rhythm, from when she quietly lifted the quilt and tiptoed past the outer house.

He simply did not intervene.

Because he also wanted to know certain things.

He gave a faint smile:

"Ying Ge, I have a question for you."

Ying Ge stood there, waiting, scratching her head:

"What?"

"Do you want to be your parents' daughter, or do you want to become a god?"

Ying Ge was no longer at an age of complete ignorance, and having just seen those things, she answered immediately upon hearing Yu Lin's question:

"I want to be my parents' daughter."

"I don't want to become a god!"

Yu Lin looked at her and nodded.

His expression did not change, no surprise.

Regarding Ying Ge's choice, he found it quite reasonable; after all, compared to becoming a god, Ying Ge's feelings for people ran deeper.

It might also be that she did not know what becoming a god entailed.

But it didn't matter.

Yu Lin said:

"Hmm, since that's the case—"

His words had not finished.

Ying Ge's body suddenly flashed.

It was not emitting light; something was drawn from within her, like a gust passing through her body, taking away an unseen weight.

Her feet left the ground, her hair floated, her clothes fluttered, she looked at Yu Lin, her lips moved slightly, then she flew away.

She flew toward the forest, at a speed like an arrow, and in an instant vanished into the darkness beyond the moonlight.

"Hm?"

Yu Lin stood in place, looking that way, raising an eyebrow slightly.

He made no move to block, because he wanted to see what that creature was up to.

He took a step, his figure disappearing at the doorway.

The forest was very dark.

The moonlight was blocked by the canopy, only a few slender shafts of light filtered through the gaps in the leaves, falling onto the ground.

The fallen leaves were thick; stepping on them made no sound.

Yu Lin walked through the woods, his steps neither fast nor slow, like strolling in his own courtyard.

He passed several trees, crossed a clearing, and walked along a dried‑up creek.

Ahead, a stone gate appeared.

The gate was huge, taller than the surrounding trees.

Intricate patterns were carved on the lintel, those patterns faintly glowing in the darkness, like ancient script.

Yu Lin recognized the gate.

It was the entrance to the Ruins he had remodeled.

God King Ruins.

Ying Ge stood before the gate, back to him, facing the massive door.

She was barefoot, stepping on the icy stone steps, her clothes appearing deep in the darkness.

Yu Lin's arrival did not make her turn; she reached out and pushed the door open.

The door was heavy, the panels emitting a low rumble, yet she did not exert force; with a gentle push, the door opened!

A golden light surged from the doorway, bathing her, casting her shadow onto the fallen leaves behind her!

Yu Lin watched her walk in, his mouth twitched.

"Interesting."

He stepped forward, following, and entered the gate.

The interior of the Ruins was much the same as when he last came.

The passage was long, the stone walls on both sides covered with Rune, those Rune emitting a faint blue glow in the darkness.

At the end of the passage was a fork, and at the end of that fork more forks, a labyrinthine tangle.

But Yu Lin didn't need directions; he followed Ying Ge, going wherever Ying Ge went.

She hesitated and paused, as if she had been here many times, as if she had walked this road countless times.

Even so, Yu Lin didn't need her to show the way.

The current developments made Yu Lin increasingly interested.

They pressed on.

They passed through those corridors, walked past places once guarded by monsters.

Those monsters were still there, black, faceless, expressionless, but this time they stood silently on both sides, like statues.

There were also those stone giant guardians.

They watched Ying Ge walk past them, motionless.

They continued onward.

They arrived before that massive bronze door.

The two paintings on the door remained: on the left, Bader, bearing the sun on his back; on the right, Loki, standing amidst endless flames.

This time, however, the door wasn't shut tight, leaving a gap.

It seemed to be waiting for Yu Lin and them to arrive.

Ying Ge walked straight in.

Yu Lin followed.

Upon entering, the Great Hall was still that Great Hall.

The vaulted ceiling rose so high its top couldn't be seen; the floor was paved with huge blue stone slabs, each polished to a mirror-like sheen.

Those statues remained, one by one, lined up in a row, extending from the entrance to the limits of sight.

Odin, Thor, Tyr, Freyja, Freyr, Heimdall...... that's all.

This time, they were different.

On each statue's brow, a glass bead was set.

The bead was small, fitting exactly into the brow's position, like a third eye.

They glowed in the darkness—gold, silver, dark red, deep blue, emerald, violet-black—each different, each pulsing slowly like a heartbeat!!

Yu Lin recognized those beads.

They were the laws he had gathered, the laws of the dead gods!

It seemed someone had taken these beads from the laws he had gathered, and someone had set them into the statues' brows.

Looking ahead again.

On the Divine Seat, which had been empty, now sat a person.

It was Ying Ge!

Ying Ge sat there, back straight, hands on her knees, just as she always did when sitting at the table.

Her feet couldn't reach the ground, dangling in midair.

Her face was lit by those beads' light, half bright, half dark.

Behind her, a glass bead hovered in midair, red and black intertwining, winding, biting within it, like two snakes forever inseparable!

Yu Lin stood at the passage's entrance, watching Ying Ge and those statues, and the glass bead hovering behind the throne.

His face full of resignation, he spoke:

"Loki, what exactly are you up to?"
