Chapter 105: The Battle of Sanlak Castle

~7 min read 1,316 words

The Night Goblin leader still had his own bodyguard, a group of Night Goblins with significantly better equipment, and after cutting down a few of the lads who were running away in a panic, the line was gradually stabilized by him.

"Hold! Hold for me, that shrimp with the winged horse is already done for! Take the shrimp's stone city, victory belongs to us great Goblins!" The Night Goblin leader's shrill voice echoed over the battlefield, which made Sinuoli's side feel a tightness in their hearts.

"Bullshit!" Fatisi Qishi swung his greatsword in a circle, slicing off the skulls of two Night Goblins who were a beat too slow in running, "What kind of storms and waves has Brother Akeman not seen? He has even killed many giants, how could he fall into the hands of you trash who aren't even as good as rats!"

Fatisi Qishi roared, "Kill them all! I won't take a single cent of the loot!" He used profit to boost the morale of the adventurers around him.

"Buluokesen, aim and fire for me!" Sinuoli saw that Night Goblin boss and his bodyguard, which were clearly different from the others around them; if not now, when would be the time to "shoot the horse first to capture the rider"?

This genius young Engineer did not let Sinuoli down; while directing the artillery crew to calibrate the ballistae and Cannon, he personally operated the Flame Cannon, which had the highest difficulty of use.

The Night Goblin leader, dancing about in front of the line, had not yet realized what was about to happen; he was still feeling smug about successfully reorganizing his line and making that group of sudden enemies too afraid to advance!

Just at this moment, death descended from the sky! Three huge Crossbow bolts, two Cannon shells, and one massive fireball appeared above the heads of these Goblins.

While the Artillery was showing its power, on the south side of the battlefield, at the mouth of the valley, another unit appeared. Leading them was a small group of Knights, and the one in the lead was mounted on a Pegasus with wings growing from its ribs.

"Charge! For Bretonnia!" the leading Pegasus Knight shouted! He and his companions behind him held their lances level, forming an assault formation with him as the arrowhead.

Behind them were a group of literal "plain-clothed" archers, who showered the Goblins in their charge path with arrows from the longbows in their hands.

"Peasant Archer!" Sinuoli muttered; he had some understanding of this only ranged force of Bretonnia.

In Bretonnia, every peasant almost has to learn how to use a longbow, whether they are willing or not. This tradition is usually enforced by local lord supervisors to ensure they can respond to the call of war at any time.

This is because the Knightly Vow followed by the nobles forbids them from using any type of ranged weapon, which is considered a cowardly act.

The equipment of these temporarily conscripted Peasant Archers does not come from the local lord's Armory, but must be prepared by themselves, so they wear various non-uniform clothing when they participate in battle.

Likewise, their longbows are also their own property, passed down from father to son, so the quality is uneven. This leads to their poor shooting accuracy.

To compensate for these weaknesses, the archers often gather into large cluster units on the battlefield, performing organized volleys against incoming enemy units. They also use temporarily made wooden stakes and Caltrop to defend their positions, barely resisting the enemy's impact.

Although a Peasant Archer's pay is pathetic by most standards, they can still supplement their family's income during the off-season.

With the goal of earning money, the morale of the Peasant Archers is very poor; if there were no Knights nearby to supervise and encourage them, situations where the archers flee directly when approached by the enemy occur from time to time.

Under the cover of the archers, the charge of the newly arrived Knights achieved gratifying results; they plunged straight into the center of the battlefield before slowly decelerating, and they converged with the vanguard of Sinuoli's troops led by Fatisi Qishi!

Looking at the land plowed by the Artillery and the severed limbs and arms that could no longer be recognized, every Bretonnian could not help but marvel at the power of the Artillery.

"In the name of the Lady! What on earth brought you here, Uncle Fatisi!" the Knight riding the Pegasus shouted; he clearly knew Fatisi.

"Don't talk about that for now! We must quickly crush the Goblins completely; rescuing the defenders in the castle is the real priority!" Sinuoli arrived riding his Rock Sheep.

Seeing the valley mouth, the only way to retreat, blocked by Human reinforcements, the Night Goblins under Sanlak Castle began a desperate struggle.

Under the command of a Night Goblin Shaman waving a staff and shrieking, they charged the city walls like madmen; this was a battle against time.

Every Night Goblin knew that only by rushing into the castle and relying on the city walls that had originally blocked them to organize a defense and wait for reinforcements would there be a glimmer of hope for survival.

Likewise, the Human defenders on the city walls also knew that the battle had reached its most critical moment; although exhausted and near their limits, they still struggled to swing the weapons in their hands, trying to drive the Goblins off the walls.

"Fire! Shoot at the base of the city wall for me!" This was Sinuoli's voice; he shouted to Buluokesen, who was commanding the ranged troops.

"Lads, hold on, in the name of the Lady, I, Maldini, am here!" The Pegasus Knight leading the reinforcements drove his mount to take flight; watching that magnificent Pegasus spread its wings, Sinuoli's eyes went a bit straight, and he suddenly felt that the little sheep under his crotch was a bit inferior.

Buluokesen loaded two Tracer Round into his Double-barreled Rifle; they brought up two yellow lights in the night sky, lighting up the night sky in front of Sanlak Castle. This is a common way for Engineers to assist shooters in correcting their aim in low light or darkness.

However, this is also a double-edged sword, because it will also expose the Engineer's own position and attract a wave of fire, so it is generally only used when the enemy's ranged firepower is insufficient.

When the Dwarf firepower poured down, the Peasant Archers also drew their bows and fired again. This time they coated their arrows with flammable grease, and the firelight reddened the stone walls of Sanlak Castle.

The Goblins, who were already low in morale because their boss had been executed by artillery, were hit by another round of strikes; Night Goblins fear light and fire even more than their counterparts living on the surface, and their last bit of courage collapsed.

"Sons of the Mountains! Deploy formation, block the valley mouth! I don't want any dirty Goblins to walk out of the valley alive!"

Sinuoli roared while riding on the sheep's back; he hoped to wipe out all the Goblins here to prevent news of him and the reinforcements from being sent to the main force of the Greenskins.

The Dwarfs executed Sinuoli's orders precisely; they split off a portion of their troops, changed from their conventional dense formation, and lined up in a horizontal line to block the valley mouth and pushed inward.
