Chapter 16: Going Down the Mountain

~7 min read 1,308 words

Just when Wayne was considering whether to absorb this Place of Power.

The School of the Wolf medallion placed on the stone table had completed its magic charging. It looked no different from before, but if you observed carefully, you would find that a layer of strange luster, vaguely visible to the naked eye, had covered the surface of this medallion.

Geralt reached out and took the medallion from the stone table to observe for a while, then turned and handed it to Wayne, as if relieved, while walking down the altar, saying:

"Let's go, it's time to return to the castle. A lot of things happened today, and there was even a battle, making the whole body smell of monsters."

"Let's hunt some wild game on the way, your training for today is not finished yet."

Wayne nodded, looked back at the Place of Power with some reluctance, and sighed quietly in his heart.

He hung the medallion on his chest, followed Geralt's pace in a few steps, and said:

"There should be some harvest in my fishing traps. Let's pick some mushrooms in the forest and see if we can catch a few rabbits or roe deer."

"However, there is not much wine left in the warehouse. There is still more than a month before spring. You can't drink as unrestrainedly as before."

………………

Winter passed and spring came. When Wayne was preparing to go down the mountain, time soon came to the spring of 1250.

Kaer Morhen is located in the Blue Mountains in the northeast of the Northern Kingdoms, belonging to the territory of Kaedwen. Although the heavy snow had not completely melted at this time, the weather was still very cold.

But the Witchers who had been holed up in the castle all winter had to set off on their journey again and run around for their respective lives.

Eskel and Lambert had already set off a few days in advance. They planned to go to the free city of Novigrad in the north this year to see if they could find commissions.

Now only Vesemir, Wayne, and Geralt were left in the castle.

And today, Wayne and Geralt were also preparing to leave Kaer Morhen and set off for the Northern Kingdoms.

The destination of Wayne's journey had not been determined, but the purpose of a Witcher is to accept commissions and earn gold coins. They would first wander around some villages nearby to see if there were monsters that needed to be cleared, and by the way, inquire about some war intelligence.

According to past experience, wherever there is a war and casualties occur, those corpses will attract a large number of monsters to follow, bringing danger to the people nearby.

If there is no war, they will go to the big cities in the north to find opportunities, where there are more rich people and complex relationships, making it relatively easy to find work.

And this time going down the mountain, as a freshly baked Witcher, Wayne must save some money to get himself a mount and forge a silver sword. These are essential equipment for a Witcher, and neither is cheap. It is estimated that it will take a long time to save up.

Of course, this is Geralt's idea. However, he didn't know that Wayne was much richer than he imagined.

The accumulation of these two years, in Wayne's system, there was still a professional treasure chest and more than five hundred ordinary treasure chests that had not been used. Each treasure chest had some coins, and the total quantity must be quite considerable.

However, Wayne knew that this money was obtained out of thin air after all. If Geralt had been by his side, then when he obtained this huge sum of money, it would be a bit difficult to explain.

So, he must find an opportunity to divert Geralt for a period of time and find an excuse for his harvest.

However, these were things to think about after leaving Kaer Morhen.

Under the gaze of the old Witcher, Wayne followed behind Geralt, leading the gray mare carrying the luggage, and soon disappeared into the forest.

Although there was no blood relation between them, the old witcher cared for his junior like a true elder.

He stepped forward, gently hugged Vesemir, and said sincerely:

"Please rest assured, teacher. I will learn well from Geralt and become an excellent witcher."

Who would have thought that upon hearing Wayne's words, Vesemir would instead put on a stern face and say:

"You only need to learn how he deals with various monsters; if you pick up his bad habits like gambling, whoring, or spending money recklessly, it will only harm you."

Hearing the old witcher say this, Wayne couldn't help but laugh out loud. He turned his head to glance at Geralt, who had turned into a sourpuss, and then chimed in:

"I understand, teacher."

"It is getting late, and we must set off early."

"Otherwise, we will have to spend the night in the forest."

Vesemir patted Wayne on the shoulder with some reluctance and said his goodbyes:

"Alright, you two should get going. Remember my words: do not trust others easily."

Wayne nodded seriously once more, and then, under the old witcher's gaze, he set off together with Geralt.

The destination for this journey had not yet been determined, but since the witchers' goal was to accept contracts and earn crowns, they would first wander through some nearby villages to see if there were any monsters that needed clearing, and incidentally, gather some intelligence on the war.

According to past experience, wherever a war had occurred and casualties had appeared, those corpses would attract a large number of monsters to follow in their wake, bringing danger to the nearby humans.

If there were no wars, they would go to the large cities in the North to look for opportunities; there were more wealthy people there, and with the complex relationships, it was easier to find work.

As for this trip down the mountain, as a fresh-out-of-the-oven witcher, Wayne had to save up some money to get himself a mount and also forge a silver sword. These were essential pieces of equipment for a witcher, and neither was cheap; he estimated it would take a long time to save up.

Of course, this was Geralt's line of thinking; however, he did not know that Wayne was much wealthier than he imagined.

With the accumulation of these past two years, Wayne still had one Expert-level Treasure Chest and over five hundred Ordinary-level Treasure Chests in his system that had not been used. Each chest contained some coins, and the total amount would certainly be quite substantial.

However, Wayne knew that this money had, after all, appeared out of thin air. If Geralt stayed by his side the whole time, then once he obtained this massive sum, it would be somewhat difficult to explain.

Therefore, he had to find an opportunity to send Geralt away for a period of time to find an excuse for his gains.

But these were things to think about only after leaving Kaer Morhen.

Under the old witcher's gaze, Wayne followed behind Geralt, leading the mare loaded with luggage, and soon disappeared into the forest.
