Chapter 33: So I Really Got Tied Up?

~6 min read 1,153 words

Wei Tianhai saw Ye Zhentian shielding Jiangnan so fiercely; though he felt resentment, this was Ye's territory, so he dared not act rashly, suppressing his anger, letting out a cold snort, and said nothing more.

However, to everyone's great surprise, Jiangnan did not stop there; he slowly shook his head, his expression solemn, his tone low:

"Elder Ye, this Jin Fo must never be taken!"

The words shocked the entire hall. Ye Zhentian's face turned uneasy, his brows knit, wanting to speak but holding back.

Ye Wan could no longer endure; she had never liked Jiangnan, and hearing his words inflamed her, her eyebrows bristling with anger.

She sprang to her feet, her high heels striking the floor with a "deng deng deng" sound, marching straight to Jiangnan, her voice sharp and shrill.

"Who do you think you are? To dare spout such nonsense here! My grandfather's status is not something a street swindler like you can casually fool."

"I see you're clearly trying to come to the Ye family to mooch food and drink, deliberately causing trouble!"

While saying this, Ye Wan tightly grabbed Ye Zhentian's arm, shaking it in a coquettish manner:

"Grandfather, please don't believe this swindler's words! He's jealous that Young Master Wei gave you such a precious gift, and is deliberately sowing discord!"

Her tone was petulant yet pleading.

Yet this attitude turned Ye Zhentian's face ashen. He opened his mouth to rebuke Ye Wan again, but swallowed the words.

Because he knew his granddaughter had been spoiled, accustomed to being pampered, and in front of so many guests he could not be too harsh.

"Wan'er, you must not be rude! Mr. Jiang is an honored guest of our Ye family!"

Ye Zhentian said in a deep voice, his tone carrying a hint of helplessness and a touch of authority.

Ye Wan, however, would not relent; tears welled in her eyes as she said plaintively:

"Grandfather, you're scolding me! You're scolding me for an outsider! Boohoo..."

As she spoke, crystal tears fell, like pear blossoms in rain, her eyes filled with resentment.

"Fine, you say the Jin Fo has a problem? Then I'll prove to you who the real swindler is!"

Ye Wan suddenly shouted, snatching the Jin Fo straight from Wei Tianhai's hand and clutching it tightly. At the same time she glared fiercely at Jiangnan, saying with a hint of provocation:

"Didn't you say this Jin Fo is ominous? I'm holding it now; let's see what it can do to me!"

She lifted her chin like a proud peacock.

Wei Tianhai, seeing this, hurriedly added from the side:

"Miss Ye is right! That kid looks like a charlatan; Elder Ye, you must not be fooled by him! My Jin Fo was consecrated in a temple, how could it be ominous?"

He smiled obsequiously, still glancing at Ye Wan in a flattering way.

While speaking, he silently observed Ye Wan's reaction; seeing her grateful glance, he felt a surge of pride, straightened his back, and wore a smug smile.

Jiangnan watched everything silently, a mocking curl forming at the corner of his mouth. He said nothing further, only gave Ye Zhentian a meaningful glance, his eyes tinged with a hint of pity.

That look seemed to say: "Seek your own blessings."

Ye Zhentian felt a chill from Jiangnan's gaze, an ominous premonition rising in his heart. He opened his mouth to say something, but ultimately remained silent.

In any case, they would wait until the banquet ended before deciding privately.

After all, Ye Wan was his most beloved granddaughter; he could not bring himself to punish her in front of so many people.

Ye Zhentian sighed, his eyes filled with helplessness and indulgence.

"Fine, let's set this aside for now and hold the banquet."

Ye Zhentian waved his hand, forcing down his unease, and pretended to be relaxed as he spoke.

He forced a smile, but it looked rather stiff.

Yet at that moment, an accident suddenly occurred!

In a corner of the banquet hall, a small cart loaded with wine and drinks, knocked by someone, suddenly went out of control, racing toward Ye Wan's direction.

The wheels screeched against the floor, a harsh shriek that stood out starkly in the silent hall.

Many of the onlookers turned their gazes toward it.

But Ye Wan was immersed in triumphant joy, completely unaware of the danger behind her. A smile curled at her mouth, her face full of pride.

When she heard the sound and turned around, the cart was already within arm's reach!

Ye Wan's pupils contracted, her smile freezing instantly.

She stared in terror, trying to dodge, but her legs felt as if filled with lead, unable to move. Her whole body stiffened,

as if falling into an ice cave.

A wave of death's aura instantly enveloped her; she could even smell the strong alcohol from the cart and the cold breath of metal colliding.

"It's over!"

Ye Wan, in despair, closed her eyes, giving up any thought of evading.

At that critical moment, a figure surged like lightning, grabbing Ye Wan and pushing her aside. The figure moved as fast as a gale, its momentum like a flash.

"Bang!"

The cart slammed into the wall, producing a massive crash; the sound of shattered bottles and splashing liquid intertwined, leaving the scene in chaos, glass shards scattering, wine spilling everywhere.

Ye Wan, still shaken, collapsed onto the floor, gasping heavily, her back already soaked with cold sweat. Her complexion was pale, her lips trembling.

"I was saved! I actually got rescued!"

She was about to lift her head and properly thank her savior, only to see that the rescuer was Jiangnan, whom she had just humiliated repeatedly.

She instantly grew angry and frantic, showing no gratitude at all; instead, as if she had found a lever, she pointed at Jiangnan and screamed hoarsely:

"It's you! It's you who cursed me! It must be you! You broom-star! Why did you harm me!"

Ye Wan's face twisted grotesquely, her voice sharp and grating.

Her shrill, harsh voice echoed through the banquet hall, making everyone feel uneasy.

The crowd stared at each other, their eyes filled with shock.

The dignified Miss Ye of the Ye family, yet such a disgraceful loss of composure?

Jiangnan slowly rose, looking at the hysterical woman before him, a flash of disappointment and disgust passing through his eyes.

He clearly saved her, yet got a bite back.

At this moment, Jiangnan even regretted why he got involved in other people's business.

Ye Wan saw Jiangnan remain silent, further confirming her suspicion. So her cheeks twisted viciously, completely unlike a genteel lady. She roared:

"Jiang—, why aren't you speaking? Did you become mute?"

"I'll tell you, don't think these filthy tactics can deceive our Ye family. I, Ye Wan, am not as easy to trick as grandpa!"

"If you have the guts, keep cursing me!"
