Chapter 58: – Bank Heist
The female Security Officer looked toward Jiangnan with worry, about to speak but held back.
Jiangnan sensed her gaze, gave a faint return glance, his eyes calm as an ancient well, so deep that no ripple could be seen.
He slightly nodded, indicating he was unimpeded.
That unhurried demeanor was like a towering mountain, soothing to the heart.
A police car drove into the Public Security Bureau; under the night's veil the bureau was now brightly lit, the atmosphere unusually tense.
The air was filled with a murderous chill, faintly mixed with restlessness and unease.
Jiangnan stepped out of the car and keenly caught the unusual agitation in the air.
In the corridor, shadows hurried, footsteps were rapid and chaotic, phone rings rose and fell, weaving a noisy symphony.
Ma Dui escorted Jiangnan straight to the interrogation room.
A hint of a grim smile lingered on his face, his gaze fierce as a wolf about to bare its fangs.
At that moment, a figure hurried from the far end of the corridor.
The person wore a white uniform, the star emblem on his shoulder gleamed, clearly a high rank.
His features were resolute, commanding without anger, exuding the aura of a long‑time superior.
The middle‑aged man stepped before Ma Dui, his sharp gaze sweeping his face, his voice low and authoritative:
"What are you doing?"
Ma Dui's posture stiffened, the grim smile on his face froze, replaced by a flash of panic.
He stammered, trying to explain:
"Yang, Director Yang, I am handling a shooting case..."
He skirted the main issue, never mentioning Wei Tianhai's aggression, instead insisting that Jiangnan had violently resisted the law.
"Shooting case?"
The middle‑aged man's brows knit tightly,
"Were there any casualties?"
"Several people died, and all are linked to that kid!"
Ma Dui pointed at Jiangnan, his tone hard,
"So Director Yang, I request to take personal charge of this shooting case!"
"I disagree!"
Yang shook his head, a unprecedented seriousness flashing in his eyes.
"The shooting case is indeed important, but isn't the suspect already dead?"
"The follow‑up investigation only requires ordinary Security Officers. You, as a squad leader, a backbone of our bureau, have more important matters…"
Ma Dui opened his mouth, about to object.
But Yang's tone left no room for doubt as he said:
"Recently in our city, several bank robbery cases have occurred in succession. The higher‑ups are placing great importance on these, ordering us to solve them quickly and capture the culprits."
"So you must join the Special Task Force!"
"As for the shooting case…"
Yang glanced at the female Security Officer behind Ma Dui and said:
"Xiao Chen, this shooting case is handed to you; you must investigate it clearly and completely, not letting any doubt slip by, understand?"
The female Security Officer, named Chen Ying, heard Yang's order and instantly felt overjoyed.
She straightened her chest and shouted:
"Rest assured, Director Yang, I guarantee to complete the mission!"
Yang nodded, looking at Ma Dui and saying:
"Let's go, head to the meeting with me immediately, don't linger here!"
Ma Dui wore a helpless expression, could only glare fiercely at Jiangnan, then turned and left.
The two, one ahead of the other, quickly vanished at the far end of the corridor.
Chen Ying walked up to Jiangnan, apology on her face.
"Mr. Jiang, I'm truly sorry for the trouble I caused you."
She gave a slight bow, her tone sincere.
Jiangnan's expression remained calm, he silently surveyed the surroundings and slowly asked:
"What happened?"
His voice was deep and magnetic, carrying a reassuring strength.
Chen Ying lifted her head, speaking cautiously:
"I'm not quite sure either; it seems to be a big case."
She pointed toward the far end of the corridor, where lights still burned bright and shadows swarmed.
"At this hour the bureau is usually off duty; today it's this busy, so something major must have happened."
Jiangnan followed her gaze, his brows slightly furrowed.
He keenly sensed an unusual aura in the air, like the calm before a storm.
"I heard the bank was robbed, and more than once."
Jiangnan felt a stir; a bank robbery?
That's no small matter.
He recalled Director Yang's anxious expression earlier, and a vague suspicion formed in his mind.
"Mr. Jiang, if you're all right, you may return first."
Chen Ying's voice interrupted Jiangnan's thoughts.
"It's too chaotic here, unsafe. I'll escort you out."
Jiangnan nodded, saying nothing more.
……
The air in the conference room was stagnant, cigarette smoke curled, suffused with a tense, oppressive atmosphere.
Yang Ju forcefully stubbed out the cigarette in his hand; the butt twisted painfully in the ashtray, like his mood at that moment.
"Useless! All of you are useless!"
His enraged roar echoed in the conference room, shaking the tea cups on the table into a buzzing.
The Security Officers lowered their heads one by one, silent as cold cicadas, daring not even a breath.
Several banks were robbed in succession, the method clean and swift, leaving no clues; this was undoubtedly a huge challenge to their abilities and a ruthless trampling of their dignity.
At that moment, a shrill phone ring cut through the heavy silence.
Red phone!
Everyone's hearts sank sharply.
The middle-aged man snatched the phone, his tone urgent:
"What's the situation?"
A frantic voice came from the other end:
"Report, Director, Renmin Street Gongjian Bank... has been robbed again!"
"Bang!"
The middle-aged man slammed the phone onto the table, producing a huge bang.
His complexion turned iron-blue, veins on his forehead bulging, as if he would explode the next second.
"Send reinforcements immediately! Ensure the robbers are brought to justice!"
He growled through clenched teeth, each word squeezing out as if from his teeth.
The Security Officers, as if granted a pardon, rose swiftly and rushed out the door.
In the conference room, only the middle-aged man remained; he slumped in his chair, hands limp, eyes filled with fatigue.
……
At the same time, Chen Ying had just escorted Jiangnan to the entrance of the Public Security Bureau,
When another Security Officer suddenly rushed over, dashing in front of Chen Ying.
"Chen Ying, emergency task, everyone has assembled, come with me quickly!"
Chen Ying immediately nodded, flashing an apologetic smile toward Jiangnan.
"Mr. Jiang, sorry, I have an emergency task now, I must leave first."
She spoke hurriedly, her steps never stopping.
Jiangnan suddenly reached out and stopped her.
"Wait."
His voice was deep and powerful, bearing an undeniable authority.
The female Security Officer halted, puzzled, looking at him.
Jiangnan suddenly pulled a neatly folded talisman paper from his pocket and handed it to her.
"Take this."
The female Security Officer was even more puzzled.
"What is this?"
Jiangnan gave no explanation, merely uttering two words lightly:
"Amulet."
The female Security Officer froze for a moment, instinctively taking the talisman paper. Then, in a hurried tone, she said:
"Thank you, Mr. Jiang, I'm leaving now!"
"Alright!"
Jiangnan watched Chen Ying's retreating back, his brows slightly furrowed.
