Chapter 61: Ma Dui

~7 min read 1,228 words

Ma Dui burst into a tirade the moment he saw Chen Ying, shouting at her from head to toe.

Before Chen Ying could even speak, Ma Dui's gaze fell on Jiangnan.

"How is he here again?"

Ma Dui frowned, his tone full of dissatisfaction.

Chen Ying steeled herself and explained:

"Captain Ma, Mr. Jiang is here to help."

Ma Dui gave a cold snort:

"Help? I think he came to turn himself in voluntarily!"

Jiangnan furrowed his brow slightly; seeing this, Chen Ying stepped forward immediately and shielded Jiangnan behind her.

"Captain Ma, I specially invited Mr. Jiang to assist the investigation—please step aside."

Upon hearing this, Ma Dui flew into a rage. He glared at Chen Ying and spoke coldly.

"Chen Ying, have you forgotten your position?"

Chen Ying clenched her teeth and said:

"Captain Ma, I trust Mr. Jiang, and I am willing to issue a military pledge!"

The office fell silent in an instant, everyone's eyes fixed on Chen Ying.

Ma Dui narrowed his eyes:

"Are you sure you can take responsibility for your words?"

Chen Ying took a deep breath:

"If we fail to capture the Black Shadow this time, I am willing to bear all responsibility."

Jiangnan frowned slightly, seemingly not expecting Chen Ying to make such a decision.

Captain Ma let out a cold laugh:

"Fine, I'll give you this chance."

He turned to Jiangnan, his eyes filled with a strong warning:

"You'd better not disappoint me, or else…"

"Ignorant."

Jiangnan gave him a dismissive glance, a flicker of contempt flashing in his eyes.

"I'd like to see just how capable you are!"

Captain Ma snorted, turned, and walked into the office.

Chen Ying let out a breath and looked at Jiangnan.

Jiangnan, however, suddenly asked:

"What is the Black Shadow's target this time?"

Chen Ying flipped through the information in her hand, speaking extremely quickly,

"It's the Agricultural Commercial Bank in the city center."

Jiangnan took the document, skimmed it quickly: "What's the time?"

Chen Ying glanced at her watch: "It's tonight at ten o'clock."

Jiangnan closed the file: "We need to act immediately."

Chen Ying nodded: "I'll arrange the personnel."

……

Night fell, dark clouds roiled.

The Agricultural Commercial Bank building in the city center stood still, lights blazing all around.

The security officers kept watch until ten at night, only to find the bank utterly quiet, nothing happening.

Jiangnan and Chen Ying hid in the darkness, waiting silently.

"Mr. Jiang, do you think we won't be toyed with by the Black Shadow's people?"

Chen Ying asked with some worry,

"But we currently have no way to track the Black Shadow's movements; we can only resort to the crudest method, protecting every bank in Jinghai City."

"But this would require a huge deployment of manpower, and everyone would have to stay constantly tense."

"They… will come."

Jiangnan looked at the sky and said in a low voice.

"If they…"

Chen Ying was about to speak again, but before she could utter the four words, a sudden boom came from the bank's rooftop.

"The Black Shadow actually dared to make a move!"

Chen Ying bit her lip, brows furrowed tightly.

Jiangnan's eyes flashed like torches as he stared at the bank building,

"Take action now!"

The two quickly got out of the car and rushed toward the bank building. Inside, the bank was in chaos, the alarm blaring shrilly.

Several figures darted out from the back door, holding black bags.

"Halt!"

Chen Ying shouted sternly, simultaneously drawing her sidearm.

The robbers glanced back, sped up their escape. Jiangnan, quick-eyed and quick-handed, lunged forward in a single stride.

His figure was like lightning; in the blink of an eye, he cut off the path of two robbers.

Chen Ying seized the opportunity, rushed forward, and subdued one of them on the ground.

Another robber, seeing this, hurriedly drew his pistol.

Jiangnan's gaze hardened, and with a single kick he sent the pistol flying.

"Well done!"

Chen Ying praised, and at the same time took out Handcuffs to cuff the two robbers.

However, the remaining robbers had already fled amid the chaos.

Chen Ying looked at the fleeing robbers, a flash of resentment crossing her eyes.

Because the robbers' chosen escape route wasn't even on the scanned map she had obtained.

In other words, these robbers knew the building's layout better than the Public Security Bureau.

And precisely because of that, although the Public Security Bureau had set a tight net, the robbers still managed to escape.

"Who sent you?"

Jiangnan spoke calmly, his voice low.

The robbers exchanged terrified glances, clamping their mouths shut.

Jiangnan's brows furrowed slightly, about to ask again, when the police siren grew nearer.

Several police cars roared in, and Ma Dui led the charge into the bank.

"What's happening?"

Ma Dui asked loudly, scanning the scene with his eyes.

Chen Ying immediately reported the situation:

"When we arrived, the robbers were fleeing. Fortunately we caught two."

Ma Dui snorted coldly, his gaze landing on Jiangnan:

"I warned you not to act recklessly."

Jiangnan remained silent, his expression calm.

Ma Dui approached the subdued robber and suddenly noticed one of them pale, blood seeping from the corner of his mouth.

"What did you do to him?"

Ma Dui glared at Jiangnan, his voice suddenly rising.

Jiangnan replied calmly:

"Just subdued him, that's all."

Ma Dui sneered, giving Jiangnan a deep look,

"Subdue? Look at his condition! This is clearly abuse!"

Chen Ying, seeing this, hurried to explain:

"Ma Duizhang, you misunderstand. Jiangnan didn't…"

Ma Dui was unmoved, sweeping his hand to cut off Chen Ying's words.

"What 'subdue' is this? It's clearly intentional harm to the suspect! Someone, seize him for me!"

Several Security Officers hesitated, looking at Jiangnan, unwilling to step forward.

Chen Ying stood in front of Jiangnan:

"Ma Dui, you can't do this! Jiangnan is the hero who helped us catch the robbers!"

Ma Dui was incensed:

"Chen Ying, don't forget your position! Move aside now!"

Chen Ying refused to budge:

"I won't!"

The atmosphere was tense, both sides locked in a standoff.

At that moment, an authoritative voice rang out:

"Everyone, stop! What's going on?"

The crowd turned, seeing a middle‑aged man stride forward.

"Yang!"

Ma Duizhang's face changed, his tone softened instantly.

Yang Ju looked around, his gaze finally resting on Jiangnan,

"How did you end up here?"

"Chen Ying, a Security Officer, asked me to help."

Jiangnan gave a slight nod, neither humble nor arrogant.

Yang Ju turned to Ma Duizhang, his brows slightly furrowed as he asked:

"Ma Dui, why are you trying to arrest him?"

Ma Duizhang, seeing this, hurried to explain:

"Yang, this kid harmed the suspect! We must handle it according to the law!"

Yang Ju frowned again: "Ma Dui, can you still distinguish primary from secondary?"

Ma Dui was at a loss, unable to answer.

Yang Ju shook his head and sighed:

"Ma Dui, you have greatly disappointed me."

Ma Duizhang's face turned ashen, he lowered his head in silence.

Yang Ju turned to Chen Ying:

"Chen Ying, you tell us the specifics."

Chen Ying reported truthfully, detailing Jiangnan's contributions.

Yang Ju listened, then nodded in approval:

"Mr. Jiangnan, thank you for your assistance. I, on behalf of the Public Security Bureau, express my gratitude."

Jiangnan gave a calm smile:

"It's a trivial effort, not worth mentioning."
