Chapter 60: Deadline to Solve the Case

~6 min read 1,190 words

At that moment, the red phone in the conference room rang.

Yang Ju's face darkened, and she immediately answered the phone.

Calls that come through the red phone are always from higher‑level departments.

"Hello, this is Yang Baoguo."

"Yang Baoguo, what's really going on with your case?"

A stern voice came from the other end of the line.

"We are pursuing the suspect with all our force, but…"

"I don't want to hear 'but'!"

The other party cut her off.

"All I know is that you still haven't caught anyone!"

"This case has already caused severe social impact, and we take it very seriously!"

"You have three days left; you must solve the case!"

"Otherwise, be prepared to face punishment!"

After saying that, the other party hung up.

Yang Ju put down the phone, her expression grim.

She turned to look at everyone present and said coldly:

"You all heard that clearly, right? The higher‑ups issued an ultimatum: the case must be solved within three days."

"Three days… three days…"

In the conference room, the atmosphere was so heavy it seemed ready to condense into droplets.

"This is simply an impossible task!"

"Yang Ju, what should we do now?"

Someone whispered a question,

Yang Ju gave no answer; she fell into thought.

……

Chen Ying didn't bother to change out of her uniform; she hurriedly accessed the system and located Jiangnan's residence.

To her great surprise, the mysterious Mr. Jiang was living in such a luxurious place.

But after a moment's thought, she felt relieved. After all, Su Family banquets are places ordinary people have no right to enter.

Standing at the villa's entrance, Chen Ying took a deep breath and pressed the doorbell.

"Ding‑dong—" the doorbell echoed in the quiet night.

A moment later, the door opened.

Jiangnan's stern face appeared before Chen Ying.

He was dressed in casual home wear, his gaze still deep and inscrutable.

"You came."

Jiangnan's voice was low, revealing no emotion.

"Hmm, I came… thank you."

Chen Ying's eyes met Jiangnan's, and a trace of nervousness rose within her.

She recalled the magical talisman paper, recalled that critical moment when he saved her.

"Thank me for what?"

Jiangnan stepped aside, letting Chen Ying enter.

"Thank you for saving me."

Chen Ying walked into the living room, her gaze sweeping the surroundings before finally resting on Jiangnan.

"Earlier at the bank, if it hadn't been for your talisman, I would have been shot dead…"

"Just a trivial effort."

Jiangnan cut her off, walked to the sofa and sat down.

"It may be a trivial effort for me, but for you, it's a life‑saving grace."

Chen Ying spoke sincerely, her eyes full of gratitude.

She took a box of snacks she had bought on the way from her bag and handed it to Jiangnan with both hands.

"This is a small token of my appreciation; please be sure to accept it."

"I came in a hurry and didn't prepare. Please don't mind, Mr. Jiang."

Jiangnan glanced at the gift box and said lightly:

"Thanks."

His voice remained even, but immediately after, he seemed to sense something and his brows twitched slightly.

"There's a familiar aura on you."

Chen Ying was startled,

"Familiar aura?"

She didn't understand Jiangnan's meaning.

Jiangnan shook his head, his eyes flickering, revealing a complex light.

Because just now, he had sensed a familiar aura from Chen Ying.

That aura was exactly the same as the one emitted days earlier at River God Spring when Dean Li's puppet disintegrated.

"Could it be… that the bank robbery case and the River God Spring Incident are somehow connected?"

Jiangnan keenly caught a thread of clue, then shook his head and said:

"It's nothing, just some memories coming to mind."

Chen Ying nodded, stared deeply at Jiangnan, and felt the man before her becoming increasingly mysterious.

The current bank robbery has unsettled people's hearts, yet the Public Security Bureau still has not a single clue.

And the mysterious man before her possesses some mysterious abilities she cannot comprehend.

Perhaps... I could ask him for help!

At that thought, Chen Ying's eyes suddenly brightened.

She looked at Jiangnan and asked earnestly:

"Mr. Jiang, will you help us?"

"Help you?"

Jiangnan looked at Chen Ying,

"Why should I help you?"

"Because... because you are not a cold-blooded person who watches death without intervening!"

Chen Ying clenched her teeth and said.

Jiangnan remained silent, seeming to be pondering something.

Chen Ying looked at him nervously, waiting for his answer.

Time passed minute by minute, each second feeling as long as a century.

Finally, Jiangnan spoke:

"I can help you."

A flash of surprise lit Chen Ying's eyes.

"Really? That's great!"

She was so excited she almost jumped up.

"But I have a condition."

Jiangnan's tone shifted.

"What condition?"

Chen Ying asked.

"I want to know all the information, including every clue you have and the progress of your investigation."

Jiangnan's tone left no room for doubt.

"No problem!"

Chen Ying agreed without hesitation.

"As long as we can solve the case, I am willing to share all information with you."

"Very well."

Jiangnan nodded.

"Then, from now on, we are partners."

"Partners..."

Chen Ying murmured to herself, a wave of complex emotions rising within.

She did not know where this decision would lead her.

But she knew she had no way back.

To solve this earth-shattering case quickly, she must join forces with Jiangnan.

Even if ahead lies a mountain of knives and sea of fire, she will forge ahead!

Chen Ying inhaled deeply, her expression suddenly becoming unusually solemn.

She looked at Jiangnan and asked with a serious face:

"Mr. Jiang, have you heard of the Black Shadow organization?"

"Black Shadow?" Jiangnan raised an eyebrow, a strange glint flashing in his eyes.

Chen Ying nodded, her expression grave: "Exactly, this organization appears and disappears like a spirit, acting in a mysterious way."

She pulled a file from her briefcase and handed it to Jiangnan: "This is all the information we currently have."

Jiangnan took the file, flipped through it casually, his eyes flashing as they scanned each line of text.

"Interesting,"

His mouth twitched slightly upward,

"this Black Shadow doesn't seem simple."

At that moment, Chen Ying's phone suddenly rang, interrupting her conversation with Jiangnan.

She answered quickly, her face instantly turning solemn.

"What? Black Shadow struck again?" Chen Ying exclaimed, her voice full of disbelief.

Jiangnan raised an eyebrow, his gaze sharp on Chen Ying.

"They even announced the target in advance? That's too audacious!" Chen Ying gritted her teeth, clenching her fist.

She hung up, inhaled deeply, and turned to Jiangnan.

"Mr. Jiang, I need you to go with me to the Public Security Bureau."

Jiangnan was silent for a moment, then nodded lightly.

The two hurried to the Public Security Bureau, Chen Ying's heart burning with anxiety along the way.

She pushed open the Public Security Bureau doors, and a wave of chaos greeted them.

The police officers ran back and forth, and the phone rang continuously.

Ma Duizhang stood at the office doorway, his complexion as dark as ink.

"Chen Ying, you finally arrived!"
