Chapter 64: The Insider

~7 min read 1,227 words

Under the thick night sky, Ma Dui's Hanland sped faster and faster,

Chen Ying watched the Hanland car ahead, feeling increasingly uneasy.

"It's fine, he didn't notice."

Jiangnan spoke lightly, his tone carrying an unmistakable confidence.

"Aren't you afraid he'll get lost?"

Chen Ying felt a bit uneasy.

"He can't run away."

Jiangnan's mouth twitched slightly upward, revealing a meaning‑laden smile.

……

The night draped low, Jinghai City shrouded in deep darkness.

Outside You Dian Yin Hang, several street lamps cast a dim yellow glow.

Ma Duizhang stood alone at the bank entrance, his silhouette stretched long in the light.

He periodically rubbed his hands and exhaled, as if trying to dispel the winter night's chill.

"Ma Dui, what brings you here?"

The Security Officers on guard, seeing Ma Dui arrive, cast surprised glances.

"Nothing much, just came to check on everyone."

Ma Dui smiled, greeted, then pulled a Cigarette Pack from his pocket and handed them out one by one.

It was late at night, cold, and the brothers took a drag of a cigarette to rest.

The Security Officers took the cigarettes Ma Dui gave, placed them in their mouths, and lit them with a Lighter.

"If it weren't for us Ma Dui, who would come in the dead of night to visit our brothers!"

"Nonsense! Ma Dui also came from the front line, not those nepotistic trash."

"Ma Dui, it's bitterly cold, why not go home to rest! We've got this here, so rest assured."

"……"

Ma Dui gave a faint smile, saying nothing.

About ten seconds later, he suddenly lifted his head and looked around.

He discovered that all the surrounding Security Officers had fallen into a coma...

Ma Dui calmly put away the Cigarette Pack, a flash of madness crossing his eyes.

He knew that success or failure hinged on this move!

Almost simultaneously, several Black Shadows, like wraiths, darted out of the darkness, rushing straight toward the bank.

"Here they come!"

Ma Dui's heart tightened, about to speak, when suddenly those Black Shadows halted, drew guns, and aimed at Ma Dui.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!"

Ma Dui quickly raised both hands and shouted loudly.

"I'm one of you!"

"One of you?"

A masked Black Shadow stepped forward, pointed a gun at Ma Dui's head, and asked hoarsely.

"Who are you?"

"I am **Guo, the Security Team Leader here."

Ma Dui hurriedly replied, a flattering smile on his face.

"It was your people who sent me here to rendezvous with you!"

"So it's you, the boss said, the final payment will be transferred to you tomorrow."

The masked man nodded, bypassed Ma Dui, and gestured to his subordinates behind him:

"Go in, bring out all the gold bars!"

The Black Shadows heard this and rushed into the bank at once.

In no time, they emerged carrying several heavy burlap sacks.

"Boss, the gold bars are in hand!"

A Black Shadow shouted excitedly.

"Retreat!"

The masked man gave the order, and the Black Shadows, still bearing the sacks, prepared to make a getaway.

Suddenly, a cold voice sounded beside his ear.

"As expected, it's you, Ma Dui!"

Ma Dui startled, abruptly turned toward the voice,

Only to see Jiangnan, who had appeared at an unknown moment, standing before him with a half‑smile.

"You... how are you here?"

Ma Duizhang's face changed drastically, stammering the question.

"Why can't I be here?"

Jiangnan retorted, his eyes sharp as knives.

"You... shouldn't you..."

Ma Duizhang babbled incoherently, cold sweat beading on his forehead.

"Should what?"

Jiangnan pressed forward step by step.

"You should go find your master!"

Ma Duizhang forced himself to stay calm.

"Oh? Is that so?"

Jiangnan sneered.

"If you don't cast a long line, how can you catch a big fish!"

He spoke while pointing to a short distance away.

Ma Duizhang looked that way and saw rows of Public Security Bureau vehicles parked neatly there.

The few bandits from earlier had all fallen into the hands of the Security Officers.

"You've misunderstood; I'm not in league with them!"

"Is that so?"

Jiangnan pulled a photo from his pocket and tossed it in front of Ma Duizhang.

"Take a look at this."

Ma Duizhang picked up the photo and saw himself shaking hands with a masked man, his face bearing a flattering smile.

"This... this is..."

Ma Duizhang was instantly dumbfounded.

"I just took this."

Jiangnan said coolly.

"Do you have anything else to say?"

"I..."

Ma Duizhang opened his mouth but was tongue‑tied, speechless.

"**Guo, I really didn't expect you to do such a thing!"

Yang Ju's voice suddenly rang out as he led a group of Security Officers out of the darkness.

"Yang Ju, listen to my explanation..."

Seeing Yang Ju, Ma Duizhang felt as if he saw a savior and hurriedly got up, trying to explain.

"What more could you possibly explain?"

Yang Ju roared, cutting him off.

"You traitor! Can you live up to the uniform you wear? Can you live up to the people's trust in you?"

"I..."

Ma Duizhang lowered his head, overwhelmed with shame.

"Yang Ju, I was wrong, I truly was wrong."

He wept bitterly.

"I was momentarily confused, I was momentarily possessed by demons!"

"Do you realize your mistake now?"

Yang Ju looked at him coldly.

"Too late!"

"Someone, cuff him for me!"

Two Security Officers stepped forward and handcuffed Ma Duizhang.

"Yang Ju, I beg you, give me another chance!"

Ma Duizhang pleaded.

"I have elders above me and children below; I cannot go to prison!"

"Do you now realize you have a family?"

Chen Ying interjected coldly, her tone laced with disappointment and disgust.

"When you colluded with the bandits, why didn't you think of your family?"

"I..."

Ma Duizhang was speechless.

"**Guo, you keep saying it's for your family, yet I see your bank card suddenly has twenty million!"

Chen Ying pressed on step by step, her gaze like a torch, staring fixedly at Ma Duizhang.

"Where did this money come from?"

"I..."

Ma Duizhang's complexion turned as pale as paper in an instant, his body trembling violently, as if all his strength had been drained.

"These twenty million are the loot from your collusion with the bandits."

Yang Ju's voice sounded like a judgment from hell, each word striking Ma Duizhang's heart.

"Do you have anything else to say?"

"No... it's not... listen to my explanation..."

Ma Duizhang completely collapsed, slumping on the ground, incoherent.

…

Jinghai City,

A remote warehouse, its iron gate tightly shut, rusted and mottled.

The dim yellow bulb swayed in the wind, emitting a strange "creak creak" sound.

Inside the warehouse, the light was dim, and the air was filled with a musty smell mixed with the acrid odor of engine oil.

A few Black Shadow gathered around a pile of dilapidated wooden crates, whispering to themselves.

"That fool from Ma Dui, usually looks pretty sharp, but drops the chain at the crucial moment!"

A rough voice broke the silence inside the warehouse.

The speaker's face was covered with sagging flesh, fierce and terrifying, with a long Dao Ba on his left cheek that stretched from the corner of his eye to his mouth, like a centipede crawling across his face, grotesque and dreadful.

"Exactly! The duck that was in our grasp flew away, how unlucky!"

Another voice echoed, its tone laced with strong dissatisfaction.
