Chapter 1741: That Couple Really Put Their Hearts Into It
The couple did not stay long; after all, the patient had only just undergone surgery a few days ago and needed quiet rest. After exchanging a few more words, they took their leave.
Once they were gone, Geng Yanwen looked at her niece: "What a pity. If it had been a bit earlier, perhaps you wouldn't still be single."
Yu Chunmei quickly spoke up: "Stop right there. We simply had no fate together; where is the pity? Auntie, please don't say such things again. If someone with ulterior motives hears it, it could only invite disaster."
Geng Yanwen realized she had misspoken: "Fine, fine, I won't bring it up again. But you're already twenty-two. If you don't hurry up with this marriage, your mother will likely come charging over."
Yu Chunmei nodded: "Auntie, you and everyone else stop urging me. Fate is something that arrives naturally when the time is right. We can't possibly marry just for the sake of marrying."
Geng Yanwen saw her niece pulling the same old routine: "Alright, I won't meddle anymore, okay?"
Yu Chunmei began looking through the gifts Fu Yan Cheng and his wife had brought, and just then spotted the ginseng wrapped in newspaper: "Auntie, how many years old is this ginseng? It must be at least twenty years old. This ginseng is perfect for gently tonifying your body. That couple really put their hearts into it."
Geng Yanwen looked at the ginseng and couldn't help but smile: "Keep it. Yan Cheng's wife still has a few years of university left. We might as well consider it an advance on his meal costs. Just have him come to our house for meals more often in the future."
Yu Chunmei smiled: "Auntie, I'll go wash the ginseng. In a moment, I'll tear off a few ginseng threads to steep in water for you to drink. Their ginseng arrived just in time. Later, I'll tell Uncle not to rush to find ginseng anymore."
While they were still talking, Division Commander Guan pushed the door open and walked in.
He had just about to ask, "How are you feeling today?" when he saw the ginseng in his niece's hand: "Where did this come from?"
Yu Chunmei heard the voice and smiled: "Didn't you run into anyone when you came up?"
Division Commander Guan paused for a moment: "Who?"
Geng Yanwen smiled: "They must have taken a wrong turn."
Division Commander Guan took the ginseng from his niece's hand: "This ginseng is of excellent quality; it must be over twenty years old. Where did it come from?"
It was something he had been searching for days without success, yet here it was now; of course he had to ask for the full story.
Geng Yanwen smiled: "Yan Cheng and his wife left just a short while ago. They brought it, saying it was just right for gently tonifying my body."
Yu Chunmei feared her upright uncle would return the ginseng: "Uncle, just consider it an advance on meal money from Regiment Commander Fu. In the future, you can just feed him a few more meals. After all, my auntie currently needs this ginseng. Please don't..."
She hadn't finished speaking when Guan Zhendong raised his hand to stop her: "Do you think I'm some kind of saint? Public matters are public, private matters are private. This counts as our private friendship. I'm not a blockhead. Right now, nothing is more important than your auntie's health. It means I haven't spoiled that boy for nothing."
Remembering something, he then asked: "Did his wife come along?"
Geng Yanwen nodded: "Yes, they came together. She is truly educated; her way of speaking is just so polished."
Division Commander Guan pulled over a nearby stool: "His wife is no ordinary person. She studies law. A good way with words is basic for her, and besides, she is an excellent student."
Yu Chunmei had never seen her own uncle praise anyone so highly: "Uncle, how do you know his wife is a good student?"
Division Commander Guan's face was full of smiles: "A while back, I went to the city for a meeting and happened to run into an acquaintance. I casually mentioned Yan Cheng's wife's name. Now, guess what happened?"
At this, both Geng Yanwen and Yu Chunmei were hooked by curiosity: "Just hurry up and tell us."
