Chapter 25: with translation of chapter title
Wu Yue also remembered that clearing, which was also the place where she was exchanged by her original tribe.
She picked up the meat at hand, and the two walked together toward the riverbank.
On the way they encountered some tribespeople, and everyone eyed the large chunk of meat in Wu Yue's hand with envy.
"Yue, what do you think of this stone?" Qingcao asked, holding up a palm-sized, elongated stone in her hand.
The shape was suitable, but it wasn't sharp enough. Wu Yue shook her head: "We need to find one with a thin edge; a thinner stone slab would also work."
Although the food she had eaten these past two days was that kind of wild vegetable cake—just mashed wild vegetables pinched together—it had a pure natural taste, not unpleasant, but not particularly tasty either.
"Ah!" Suddenly, a cry of pain came from Qingcao ahead.
Wu Yue hurried over a few steps to check, and saw that Qingcao had already walked into the shallow water by the riverbank; the river water was clear and cold, and there were indeed more stones in the water than on the bank.
But at that moment, faint red blood traces were spreading from Qingcao's foot.
Wu Yue's face tightened: "Are you hurt?"
But Qingcao didn't immediately answer Wu Yue's question; instead, she crouched down and felt out a piece of shell.
This shell was probably already dead, its two halves still joined, about to fall off, and one edge was stained with traces of blood.
Yet Qingcao seemed to feel no pain at all, and, presenting her treasure, she handed the shell to Wu Yue: "Yue, look at this—can it work? It actually managed to slice my toe!"
Wu Yue's mouth twitched: "Miss, is this really something to be happy about?"
"Don't be happy, you're hurt; good thing we still have some hemostatic herb—I'll apply it for you."
Having said that, she pulled Qingcao to head back, but Qingcao stayed put: "Didn't we say we were still looking for a stone slab?"
Wu Yue pointed to a stone slab not far away by the river, about the size of two palms: "Found it; this will do—if it were any bigger we couldn't carry it back."
"\"You two, get up on the bank quickly! Quick! \" A sudden anxious shout startled them; they saw a middle-aged female on the bank vigorously waving her arms at them, continually shouting for them to come ashore.
Qingcao also seemed to realize something, her face turned pale, and she grabbed Wu Yue's hand and ran toward the shore.
"Qingcao, your foot is injured; running like this will worsen the injury."
Wu Yue looked bewildered, completely unable to figure out what was happening.
Gradually, she seemed to hear a strange sound; she turned her head toward it, and cold sweat instantly soaked her back, her scalp tingling.
Who could tell her, when she had gone into the water earlier to look for stones, those gentle grass fish that had darted back and forth by her feet—why did they now have such dense, sharp teeth!!!
Is this even still a grass fish?
Really not a shark pup that just looks like a grass fish?
Seeing the swarm of grass fish lunging at them like a meat grinder, Wu Yue instantly felt as if she had taken a dose of Shi Quan Da Bu Wan.
What innate frailty—her waist no longer sore, her legs no longer painful, she could sprint up five flights of stairs without breaking a sweat.
She dragged Qingcao and sprinted ashore in one go; behind them came several thuds as something landed, and after they had run a dozen meters or so, they dared to look back.
The old lady who had just been there also came up beside them, looking worried: "Don't you know how ferocious the fish in the river are? If you're hurt, don't go in the water—those creatures, once they smell blood, won't hesitate to devour you; they'd clean you off better than we clean meat."
