Chapter 286: Are There Still Masters?

~6 min read 1,181 words

Titans?

Drake had heard this name before from the mouths of Metropolis residents; it sounded like a hero organization composed of these superpowered heroes, though most of the heroes within seemed to be young people, with heroes like Superman or Batman not among them.

Even Cyborg, the half-human, half-machine figure before his eyes, did not appear to be very old in his human portion.

"Are you Superman?"

Cyborg frowned: "Then who is that person in the city center flying through the sky and earth, shooting lasers from their eyes, with a body of steel and iron?"

"I know what you want to say—but that is actually just my body, which is why it has my abilities; the soul inside is David Gunderson."

"And who is David Gunderson?"

"He claimed to be a scientist; that day, he publicly stated he was developing a clean new energy source, and he was On the Verge of Success, he just needed a little help from Superman—so I went to his home."

"But?"

"But his machine had nothing to do with clean energy; it was just disguised to look like it. The whole thing was a trap—and I was too careless; after discovering he was an immobile, cane-wielding, frail scientist, I completely let down my guard."

"You mean his machine can swap the souls of a Kryptonian and a human?"

"Exactly. After calculating success, he locked me in the basement, but he didn't dare kill me because he didn't know if that would disrupt the status quo of the soul exchange. In a sense, David Gunderson is indeed a genius of an era—but also a madman. I guess his congenital physical disability brought him much discrimination, which made him become cynical."

Cyborg fell silent for a moment, looking at the devastated streets, the buildings billowing with thick smoke, and the Metropolis citizens who finally dared to flee onto the streets.

"If I were to say it, I'm afraid I would not summarize this situation as simple 'cynicism'." He said: "This is entirely an anti-social terrorist attack, and you also have to figure out how to explain the ins and outs of this matter to the people—if they believe you."

"I am very sorry, Victor. As soon as I pried open the basement door lock, I rushed over. We can use the machine again, then destroy it. Fortunately, he cannot use the Kryptonian body, so no great damage has been caused temporarily."

Cyborg fell silent again; he was unsure what Superman meant by "no great damage has been caused."

"Uh, I mean, he cannot use Frost Breath, nor does he know how to use a bio-field well; I guess he even has earplugs in his ears to suppress most of his hearing—he probably can't stand the sensory sensitivity of my body, so he could be successfully ambushed."

"Alright, alright, let's drop this topic." Cyborg waved his hand: "Let's catch him first, then lock him up to prevent him from falling into the military's hands—that group cannot resist using this technology against you."

Drake watched as Cyborg and Superman were taken away by two other superpowered individuals, along with Superman's body. He breathed a sigh of relief and said to Camilla: "Darling, it's over. I guess Metropolis still has some security; at least those little heroes of the Titans are very powerful."

"Drake, this matter will be spread everywhere by the media tomorrow." Camilla sighed: "If we're lucky, Superman's reputation can be salvaged—but what about us? We still have to move for now, remember? The newly renovated house, only a few months old, is already uninhabitable."

"Look on the bright side, Camilla; this is our chance to pick a safe house again—this time, we can choose a suburban location far from the city center, so we won't be affected by the aftershocks of those superhuman battles."

"That won't be cheap."

"Don't worry; our house has insurance—at least 'superhuman damage' is still within the compensation scope of the policy."

Camilla helplessly nodded her head.

"Great, now I'm even more confused." Ma Ma Zhaodi repeatedly watched that video, along with the Daily Planet screenshots regarding "Mind Swap, Superman Innocent" and "Titans Unharmed, Jericho Earns Great Credit," scratching his head frantically.

"What the hell universe is this? Who is David Gunderson? Is there such a character in DC? Swapping bodies so casually with such an overpowered mechanism—did the planner fill that in with their feet? How can such alien-like invention ability have absolutely no fame?"

"And the Titans—wasn't Cyborg in the Justice League in the movies? Who are all these people in the Titans? Beast Boy? Wonder Girl? Jericho who can control Kryptonians?"

"Could this be a Silver Age old comic?"

After thinking for a long time, Ma Ma Zhaodi's head buzzed; he now only hoped this Gunderson could be well guarded and not replicate this machine again. Otherwise, if super-villains or the military or someone like that caught him and got hold of an overpowered super-hero body, this world would have to undergo a major event again.

"But looking at the situation, Drake and the others don't seem to be preparing to move; didn't they change to living in the suburbs?"

In confusion, Ma Ma Zhaodi scrolled back; he wanted to click on yesterday's news, but discovered that beneath these two news items, there was a small piece of news from two days ago.

"Hmm? What is this again?"

"Strange Celestial Phenomenon Appears Over Metropolis, Explosion Sounds Shake the Heavens and Earth!"

Ma Ma Zhaodi: "... Are there still masters?"

He clicked into the news to look; there was also a video inside.

"Friends, I believe everyone has seen the news reports on yesterday's disaster in Metropolis, but I must tell you that the reconstruction of the damage caused by the evil scientist to Metropolis has begun today, and the speed is very fast—we already have sufficient experience with building repairs."

"What exactly are you proud of?" Ma Ma Zhaodi's corner of the mouth twitched.

"Please look up, friends; we can see that the reconstruction work of this city is proceeding in an orderly manner, so there is no need to worry; Metropolis remains one of the top two safest cities in the United States—"

Boom!

A violent thunderclap suddenly rang out in the video; the host, who had been facing the camera giving an introduction, looked up in confusion, and was then hard-controlled by the scene in the sky for three seconds.

Above the skyscrapers under reconstruction, the sky changed from bright to dark within a few short seconds; strange energy halos radiated deep and shimmering light, exploding with sound, and their range began to become larger and larger.

Black clouds pressed down on the city, the sound shook the heavens, and its momentum could almost compare to the apocalypse in disaster movies—at this moment, not only could the host not speak, but even Ma Ma Zhaodi fell silent.

"Is this really not the Chitauri invasion portal to New York?" he thought: "Seeing Marvel movie content in the DC comic world—why am I having such a dream?"
