67. Pursuit and Killing

Hearing Huang Cheng's speculation about Qin Hai, Zhang Xiaoxiao went rigid, her pupils trembling in terror. She had previously asked that enthusiastic and hearty Enforcer for help, never imagining that the kindness he displayed might actually be a false mask.

"You... but weren't you just joking around with him earlier?" Zhang Xiaoxiao recalled that when Qin Hai and Huang Cheng were on the phone, the two had briefly bantered, their words sounding quite familiar and close.

"That was a necessary disguise; if I hadn't done that, it might have made him alert." Huang Cheng also closed his eyes in heartache. "I once thought he was my best comrade-in-arms, but I discovered he was actually in league with those guys."

Zhang Xiaoxiao was struck dumb, thinking of herself, who dared not confide secrets to friends because she suspected her own college friends might also be members of the "Evolution Heaven" organization; for a moment, she felt a sense of empathy.

"Master, where should we go now?" Xiao Zhang, who had been driving in circles, asked Huang Cheng.

Huang Cheng thought for a moment, and just as he was about to name a place, his peripheral vision caught a black SUV behind them. His expression changed instantly, and he said in a low voice, "Qin Hai has followed us!"

Hearing this, the other two in the car felt their hearts jump in shock.

"Don't look back." Huang Cheng noticed Zhang Xiaoxiao subconsciously wanting to turn around, and he barked a low warning, "Control your expression; leave what happens next to me."

Zhang Xiaoxiao bit her lip secretly and nodded slightly.

Before long, Xiao Zhang, who was driving, noticed the black SUV driven by the Enforcer Qin Hai accelerate from the side to follow them, driving parallel to him.

The SUV rolled down the passenger window, and Qin Hai's honest and enthusiastic smiling face appeared before the three in the car. The other party laughed, "Hey, what a coincidence."

"Brother Qin." Xiao Zhang greeted Qin Hai with a smile.

"Pull over and let's chat," Qin Hai said with a chuckle. "I happen to have something to ask you all."

Hearing this, all three in the car felt a deep chill in the other's words. Xiao Zhang just wanted to refuse, but his peripheral vision noticed that, at some unknown time, they had been slowly surrounded by cars in front and behind them; their car was being pinched in the far right lane.

Reality is not a movie; if Xiao Zhang slammed on the gas to ram them, it would surely result in a wrecked car and death, which might be exactly what these mentally deranged people wanted to see.

Zhang Xiaoxiao's breathing grew slightly rapid, her heart filled with fear, and she gripped her seatbelt tightly in tension, while Huang Cheng's expression sank, his forearm stiffening for an instant.

With no other choice, considering their lives paramount, Xiao Zhang slowed the car down after receiving a nod from Huang Cheng, preparing to stop.

However, as the speed decreased, the three felt a jolt from behind, feeling the car get bumped. Xiao Zhang added back some speed. They looked at the car behind them in astonishment, then at Qin Hai, who was grinning at them from the SUV beside them; it seemed these people wanted to make them stop where they wanted.

Everyone gritted their teeth, all knowing that their prospects were grim.

Finally, the four cars stopped at a construction site, and the people in the cars all got out.

Huang Cheng, Xiao Zhang, and Zhang Xiaoxiao huddled back-to-back, vigilantly watching the people surrounding them: Qin Hai, wearing an Enforcer uniform, and a group of people who looked like they worked in various trades.

"Old Qin, that's not a decent way to do things, why did you bump your brother's car just now?" Huang Cheng laughed, feigning ease. However, the moment he finished speaking, he suddenly felt a pain in his chest. He looked down and stared in disbelief at an unusually long finger piercing his heart, then blankly looked up at Qin Hai, who had raised that finger.

Before he could even react, Huang Cheng felt as fragile as a piece of paper. As he felt his life slipping away and experienced the immense pain of his heart being pierced, he was hoisted high into the air.

"Master!" Seeing this, Xiao Zhang didn't even have time to be angry or grief-stricken before he noticed the others surrounding them had already picked up sharp blades hidden in their clothes and were charging at them.

He had no choice but to grit his teeth and protect Zhang Xiaoxiao, who was nearly paralyzed with fear, pulling her to run as fast as he could, heading straight for an underground tunnel in the construction site.

During the run while being dragged by the arm, Zhang Xiaoxiao regained her senses, trying hard to pull herself together and following closely behind Xiao Zhang. She tried not to think about everything that had just happened.

It was too fast; everything changed too quickly.

Captain Huang Cheng, such a living, breathing person, had actually been cruelly murdered by a monster like Qin Hai, who wore a human face. He died just like that, with no time to struggle. He had clearly said before, "Hold onto hope and strive to live on," but looking at the facts, how ironic that was.

They rushed underground and arrived at a long, narrow tunnel. The two ran rapidly, while the people and monsters holding sharp blades behind them pursued relentlessly.

Zhang Xiaoxiao just glanced back and was nearly scared into a mental breakdown by Qin Hai's current appearance. She saw that the monster named Qin Hai had almost completely torn off his human disguise; his palms were huge, his claws long, and he was carrying a bag or something similar in one hand. His entire body was torn and bloody, revealing a twisted, uneven, pitted flesh-and-blood body hidden beneath the skin. The other party was even emitting a sinister laugh, saying, "Don't run, don't run..."

How could they not run, and how could they not struggle?

Zhang Xiaoxiao and Xiao Zhang had both almost given up thinking. After running through several corridors and stairs in succession, they finally had to stop, looking in shock at where they were.

No wonder it was so familiar; this was actually an underground subway station!

A brand-new subway train was parked at the station, its doors wide open.

The two had no other escape route to choose from and could only rush into the subway, like mice being chased and toyed with by a wild cat, crawling into a cage carefully set by the hunter.

As the two rushed into the subway, Xiao Zhang and Zhang Xiaoxiao felt a deep sense of despair, because they guessed the dead end they might have to face; the subway had ends at both the front and back, and they had almost nowhere to hide.

They ran in despair, heading straight for the driver's cab, hoping for a chance to hide inside.

However, the moment Qin Hai and the others rushed into the subway, the train started, and their hearts sank to the bottom. They followed the moving subway into the pitch-black Tunnel.

Their last hope was gone too.

The fact that the subway could start meant there was someone in the driver's cab at that moment, and they were definitely in league with Qin Hai and the others. They had been playing a game of cat and mouse all along, and they were those two pitiful mice being toyed with.

Qin Hai and the group behind him stopped running and instead walked forward slowly, carrying a sense of oppression even more chilling than running.
