Chapter 427: Since You're Already Here

~8 min read 1,445 words

Carrying a head full of dew, Zhai Yuhan returned to the ward area.

When she saw the camera, she felt a bit irritable inside. Hospitals and variety shows were incompatible, and deep down, she felt some resistance.

"We still have to film daily life." Zhai Yuhan complained in a low, distressed voice.

Ji Xiang also felt this whole thing was rather unreliable, but once he thought about how he could promote and publicize partial kidney resection surgeries, he didn't hold much of a grudge in his heart.

The daytime work was for Ji Xiang and Zhao Mengmeng to better understand the work environment and procedures at the Affiliated Hospital. Ji Xiang adapted very quickly, whereas Zhao Mengmeng, who had placed first in the interview and second in the written exam, was incomparably miserable.

Clearly, clinical work was much more complex than the experiments she did in the laboratory.

The busy day ended, and as other doctors and professors got off work to go home, the Camera Crew carried their equipment back to the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery department.

"The hospital prepared food, want to eat together?" Although Zhai Yuhan didn't like dealing with the Camera Crew, she asked out of politeness.

Today, the Camera Crew's personnel were more complete, and Fan Dao was also following along with the crew.

"No need, you all eat yours." Fan Dao replied, "We'll just make do with a bite in a moment."

Zhai Yuhan didn't stand on ceremony either; seeing it was mealtime, she had the cafeteria deliver boxed meals and called Ji Xiang and Zhao Mengmeng to eat together.

Three boxes of food were placed on the office table; each box was the same, with three dishes, and it was unclear if they were tasty or not.

No one would have expectations for cafeteria food; Zhai Yuhan usually didn't eat what the cafeteria sent because it was hard to swallow, only hoping that with the Camera Crew here today, the cafeteria might make it taste better.

"Let's eat." Zhai Yuhan sat in front of the table, and after speaking, she opened it and smelled the familiar scent that made her feel nauseous.

Zhai Yuhan didn't know what to say, so she picked up her chopsticks and tried the rice.

Damn it, it's undercooked again, Zhai Yuhan cursed to herself.

The food made for medical staff was slightly better than pig slop but not by much; Zhai Yuhan had long since gotten used to ordering takeout. Although it was high in oil and salt and one didn't know what kind of "technology and ruthless additives" were in it, at least it could be swallowed.

With the Camera Crew present, it wouldn't be good not to eat; she was very unhappy, but could only frown and "choke" the rice down.

"Doctor Zhai, say a few words, let's chat briefly." Fan Dao made a gesture to remind Zhai Yuhan.

Zhai Yuhan forced a smile, maintaining her poise and warmth in front of the lens.

"How was the food when you were in school and at the hospital before?" Zhai Yuhan asked casually.

Zhao Mengmeng wanted to answer this question, but once the question crossed her mind, she kind of crashed; she stared blankly at the boxed meal, not knowing what she was thinking.

Ji Xiang shoveled food while answering, "Ours was alright. When I was in school, I would get up early every day to run a half-marathon. Passing by our hospital's pig farm, as long as I heard the sound of pigs being slaughtered, there would definitely be Red Braised Pork at noon."

"Your school even has a pig farm?" Zhai Yuhan asked.

"Sometimes the pork bought from outside would have measles, so for the health of the students, the school built its own pig farm. We also happened to raise rabbits, white mice, and other small animals for experiments."

Ji Xiang was very good at talking; his words eased the awkwardness.

"Wouldn't that be a bit troublesome?"

"It's alright, the Red Braised Pork made by our school cafeteria was still very delicious. Every time I heard the sound of pigs being slaughtered, I would skip class for ten minutes at noon to go line up for food early."

"Hula hula~" Ji Xiang ate while he spoke.

Zhai Yuhan looked at Ji Xiang in confusion, "Doctor Ji Xiang, do you think our cafeteria food is delicious?"

"It's not delicious, the rice is undercooked." Ji Xiang said the truth.

"..."

"Teacher Zhai, you eat so slowly; if an emergency Patient comes in a while, won't you be hungry while performing surgery?"

"Hula hula~"

"!!!" Zhai Yuhan really wanted to use a Number 7 Suture to sew Ji Xiang's mouth shut and tie a Surgical Knot.

Being on duty, how could there be any logic to saying an emergency Patient would come in a while?

"The teachers I met during my internship and Standardized Residency Training were all quite fat because the department was busy. One reason was having no time to exercise, and the second was not eating on time, leading to stress-induced obesity."

"Hula hula~"

Ji Xiang put down the boxed meal and chopsticks; one box of undercooked rice plus three dishes were wiped clean by Ji Xiang within two minutes.

"You..." Zhai Yuhan really couldn't understand why Ji Xiang could eat undercooked rice so heartily; he looked like a refugee.

"Doctor, Doctor!"

The sound of a Patient calling for a doctor came from the doorway.

Zhai Yuhan's expression changed; after a helpless, bitter smile, she glared fiercely at Ji Xiang, as if the Patient had been summoned solely because Ji Xiang was running his mouth.

Ji Xiang didn't seem to notice Zhai Yuhan's expression at all; he stood up immediately, "I'm here, what's wrong! Teacher Zhai, you finish eating, I'll go see the Patient."

Having said that, Ji Xiang strode out.

Looking at that, it was as if Ji Xiang were the lead doctor, and Zhai Yuhan and Zhao Mengmeng were the two students he was bringing along.

Fan Dao was also stunned for a moment.

During the daytime filming of other students, everyone was cautious and careful, like walking on thin ice; they were basically background boards. If the doctors at the Affiliated Hospital didn't repeatedly ask questions, they rarely spoke.

Yet Ji Xiang was the other extreme.

The cameraman immediately asked, "Director, who should the lens follow?"

"Ji Xiang." Fan Dao didn't hesitate and said immediately.

The lens zoomed in, and they saw two people standing at the entrance of the ward area; Ji Xiang was talking to them about something.

In Fan Dao's understanding, a Patient should be sitting in a wheelchair or hunched over with a very painful expression.

But as the lens zoomed in, Fan Dao and the Camera Crew saw that the expressions of the two people opposite Ji Xiang were very normal; they didn't look like Patients.

Could it be someone asking for directions?

Zhai Yuhan walked over and asked, "What is the matter with you two? Where are you uncomfortable?"

The woman said very embarrassedly, "Doctor, I was hurting here before."

She pointed to her stomach and then said, "The Emergency Department is busy with a major rescue, and I asked a Nurse, who said it might be a matter for the Digestive Medicine Department."

Zhai Yuhan was speechless, and Fan Dao and the Camera Crew behind him were equally speechless.

This was an emergency Patient seeking help on their own, but while it was understandable that the Emergency Department was busy with a major rescue, since they already told you it was the Digestive Medicine Department, why come to the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department?

"It's nothing," Ji Xiang said with a chuckle, "Is it only this spot that hurts? Looking at your expression now, it doesn't seem to hurt anymore."

"This whole area." The Patient used their hand to draw a large circle over their upper and middle abdomen, "It all hurts, but it's better now. It's strange, it was still hurting when I just got off the elevator."

Ji Xiang glanced at Zhai Yuhan, asking silently.

Zhai Yuhan said, "Doctor Ji Xiang, do you want to perform a physical examination?"

"Since the Patient is already here."

Since they're already here... this is the standard way a Clinical novice speaks.

Only a novice Doctor would be interested in a Patient; like a Resident Chief such as Zhai Yuhan, as long as the Patient does not have a disease belonging to their own department, they would have the Patient hurry to the relevant department, and saying even one extra word would count as being in a good mood today.
