Chapter 430: Professionalism Defeated by Good Luck Time and Time Again

~8 min read 1,454 words

The Family Member hesitated, but Doctor Lin of the Emergency Internal Medicine Department deepened their tone, "I am busy here; if you aren't afraid of something going wrong, you can sign the paper and leave first, I won't force you."

"We'll do it."

Once the mention of signing a refusal came up, combined with Doctor Lin's slightly impatient tone, the Family Member immediately agreed with her suggestion.

This was very normal, especially since there were a dozen or twenty patients waiting outside the Emergency Department; who had the time to nag a Family Member for half an hour?

Moreover, that impatient tone revealed... a sense of professional disdain, though not heavy, it was very clear.

Placing the card on the card reader, Doctor Lin of the Emergency Internal Medicine Department immediately opened the order for the patient.

"Go to the CT Room for the examination." Doctor Lin of the Emergency Internal Medicine Department said this to the Family Member without even raising their head, then immediately called the next patient in.

Because this patient had delayed things for too long, the next patient and their family were already on the verge of a breakdown, and Doctor Lin of the Emergency Internal Medicine Department knew the gravity of the situation.

Seeing that Doctor Lin had no time to explain to them, Zhai Yuhan had no choice but to leave.

She called the department, and the Nurse said the current patients were fine; Zhai Yuhan explained she was going to the CT Room and to call her immediately if anything happened.

Arriving at the CT Room, Zhai Yuhan saw Ji Xiang talking to the Family Member in a soft voice, and she moved closer.

"It's good that we found the problem, it saves you from constant pain later. By the way, your girlfriend is quite good at enduring; she hasn't come to the hospital for a proper check-up in so many years."

"She is most afraid of coming to the hospital; as soon as she feels a little better, she talks about leaving, and I can't do anything about it," the Family Member said with some difficulty.

"Get it checked out and see; it's best if there's nothing wrong. If there is a problem, we'll solve it; it's a minor issue," Ji Xiang said with a squinting smile to comfort them.

"Doctor, is the problem big?"

"If left untreated, it could become a big problem, but it is still in the early stages now."

"Doctor, don't scare me; as soon as I hear 'early stages,' I think of Cancer."

Ji Xiang looked up and patted the Family Member, "Say something nice, what Cancer or no Cancer. The early stages I'm talking about mean the Gallbladder hasn't necrosed yet; if it necrosed, it's called Gangrene in clinical terms, and while surgery could still be done, the risk is extremely high."

Zhai Yuhan watched Ji Xiang and the Family Member talking and communicating like old friends, and her mood was somewhat complicated.

Although what Ji Xiang said were all very ordinary words, and other Doctors communicated with patients and Family Members the same way, the fact that he could chat about the topic of late-stage Cancer with a Family Member in such a short time, and the Family Member accepted it, proved Ji Xiang's ability.

Zhai Yuhan had never seen such powerful communication skills.

Thinking of this, Zhai Yuhan even faintly felt in her heart that Ji Xiang's judgment was correct.

There must be something she didn't know; after all, she hadn't participated in the physical examination of the patient's abdominal pain later.

Zhai Yuhan just watched from afar, and when the patient went in for the examination, she walked into the control room.

"Resident Chief Zhai, why are you here?" The Doctor in the CT Room was familiar with her and greeted her.

"I'm here to see a patient with abdominal pain," Zhai Yuhan said. "Mid-abdominal pain, how often do you find Gallbladder Torsion?"

"Ha, Resident Chief Zhai, you are getting better and better at telling jokes." The Doctor in the CT Room chatted with Zhai Yuhan while operating, "Doesn't all Gallbladder Torsion get sent to your department? How could you not know how many there are? Are you testing me?"

As they spoke, the Doctor in the CT Room paused, as if remembering something, "What? Is this patient suspected of having Gallbladder Torsion? Do they have a fever?"

"No fever."

"The possibility of it being Gallbladder Torsion is not high; you should know more than I do." The Doctor in the CT Room breathed a sigh of relief; she didn't talk more about the patient with Zhai Yuhan, but chatted about other things instead.

The Fubu CT was done quickly; 2 minutes later the examination was finished, the patient went out first, and Zhai Yuhan stared at the machine.

The images appeared frame by frame, and soon reached the position of the gallbladder fossa.

There was nothing; the gallbladder that should have appeared here was "invisible," and it was unknown where it had gone.

The Doctor in the CT Room was surprised, "Resident Chief Zhai, impressive; the gallbladder is really not there! It doesn't look like it had a resection surgery either; it must have fallen down."

Her praise was like a whip lashing against Zhai Yuhan's back, hurting terribly.

As the images continued to move downward, Zhai Yuhan soon saw the scene she wanted to see.

The Fubu CT examination showed the gallbladder body and fundus displaced from the gallbladder fossa to the hepatogastric recess, the gallbladder was significantly swollen accompanied by diffuse thickening of the gallbladder wall, no radiopaque stones, and the enhancement of the gallbladder wall was weakened.

The imaging was definitive, and Zhai Yuhan immediately reached a diagnosis in her heart—Gallbladder Torsion accompanied by Acute Acalculous Cholecystitis.

"Resident Chief Zhai, this is Gangrene, right?" The Doctor in the CT Room pointed to a location on the image and asked.

"Yes, it just started to have Gangrene, it's not serious yet, it needs surgery immediately."

The Doctor in the CT Room gave a thumbs up with her right hand, "Impressive, Resident Chief Zhai, you haven't been a Resident Chief for long, but your level has really risen. I've seen a few cases, all of which were misdiagnosed; the patient's stomach pain never got better and only then was it checked here."

Zhai Yuhan gave a bitter smile; she knew the Doctor in the CT Room wasn't belittling her, but these words sounded exceptionally harsh.

Harsh as they were, Zhai Yuhan couldn't complain; she quickly said a few words and fled the CT Room's control room.

"Teacher Zhai, how is it?"

Just as Zhai Yuhan wanted to let out a long sigh, that "abominable" face of Ji Xiang appeared before her eyes.

The smile on Ji Xiang's face was very gentle, his affinity pulled to the limit, but Zhai Yuhan was unwilling to make eye contact with Ji Xiang.

If they didn't know each other, walking in a commercial center, Zhai Yuhan wouldn't mind turning back to admire Ji Xiang carefully.

But this was a hospital.

The most critical thing was that the professionalism Zhai Yuhan prided herself on was defeated by Ji Xiang's "good luck" time and time again.

"Teacher Zhai, how are the patient's images?"

"Admit to the ward, prepare for emergency surgery," Zhai Yuhan said with a cold face.

She didn't even dare to look at Ji Xiang, leaving him only her back as she walked toward the patient.

Zhai Yuhan didn't know what to say when facing Ji Xiang; she could only control her emotions and hurry to communicate with the patient.

Hearing Zhai Yuhan explain the condition, the patient and the Family Member were very compliant; no matter what she said, they indicated they understood and agreed.

When asked about eating and drinking, the patient said that Ji Xiang had told them not to drink water more than half an hour ago. But there wasn't enough time since the last drink, so they had to wait a little longer.

Through the patient's account, Zhai Yuhan vaguely understood that Ji Xiang already had a preliminary diagnosis when he rushed to the Emergency Department.

Strange, how did he diagnose it?

Taking the patient back to the ward, Zhai Yuhan pondered as she walked.

But even 6 hours later, standing on the operating table, Zhai Yuhan still hadn't figured out what was going on.

During the surgery, it was discovered that the gallbladder was swollen, gangrenous, and displaced to the hepatogastric recess; Zhai Yuhan performed the Gallbladder Reduction and Resection.

The surgery was very simple, at least it could not stump Zhai Yuhan.

What stumped her was Ji Xiang.
