Chapter 372: Matters of the Soul (2)

~4 min read 753 words

"Did you tell him?" Luo Qi asked, seemingly casually, though his expression betrayed a cruel sense of triumph.

"Tell who?" Guan Xinyue took a step back, pressing herself as close to the wall as possible. But the paintings hanging on the wall, rich in religious themes, made her feel a bit afraid; she could see nothing peaceful or calm in them, only primal killing intent and the stench of blood.

"Du Zhengyi?" Luo Qi smiled and said.

"Tell him what?" Guan Xinyue asked.

"Did you not discuss the soul with him?" Luo Qi asked, as if forcing her.

Guan Xinyue weighed which answer would be more advantageous for her; the current Luo Qi was making it hard for her to breathe. She had always felt Luo Qi had changed, but the current Luo Qi was practically what they called "darkened." Didn't that sort of thing usually only happen in manga when someone's parents or spouse died? If it were in a TV drama, the scope was generally broader, ranging from having one's man (or woman) stolen to having one's virginity taken, but she had been in close contact with Luo Qi the whole time, and she hadn't seen him suffer any of those things.

She looked around, a fresh wave of anxiety rising in her heart; when had they wandered into an empty corridor? Wasn't this palace always packed with people? Had she unknowingly entered a section not open to tourists?

"I did tell him," Guan Xinyue said, making a decision. Du Zhengyi had always acted as a restraint on Luo Qi; if she had already discussed this issue with Du Zhengyi, perhaps Luo Qi would consider behaving himself.

But just then, she saw a strange smile on Luo Qi's face. "You didn't tell Du Zhengyi. You like loyalty; telling Du Zhengyi these things would make you loathe yourself and suspect you had betrayed me."

A chill swept down Guan Xinyue's spine, just like being pushed into the refrigerated section of a supermarket while picking out snacks in the middle of summer. It wasn't just a bone-deep chill; there was also a heavy, raw, meaty stench. She couldn't help but scream in a low voice, "You got into my mind? Get out!"

"You dare speak to me like that?" Luo Qi frowned and said gloomily.

"Then how am I supposed to speak to you? Do you need me to kneel, Your Majesty?" Guan Xinyue said, annoyed. She didn't know how Luo Qi had become so sharp, extreme, and emotional. "Is it that time of the month for you? Do you need me to lend you a sanitary pad?"

"Little idiot," Luo Qi said.

"What?" Guan Xinyue was terrified yet furious and completely bewildered; even the way Luo Qi argued and insulted her made him feel like a stranger.

Luo Qi laughed, a very light, shallow smile, yet his eyes were ice-cold. Even when Luo Qi had been genuinely angry with Mahjong in the past, he had never smiled like this. Guan Xinyue subconsciously tensed up, preparing to meet Luo Qi's attack; she had an accurate premonition that she was about to take a critical hit from Luo Qi, and her health bar would drop by at least ninety-nine percent.

"You've been following behind me, begging me to look at you, begging me to notice you. You've fallen in love with me; that's the real reason you didn't tell Du Zhengyi the truth," Luo Qi said indifferently, as if talking about someone else's business. "Stop glaring at me. Although you can't bring yourself to ask, I can answer you directly—I definitely don't love you."

Guan Xinyue took a deep breath; in an instant, all her fear of Magic was eclipsed by her current fury. "Nonsense, I don't even..."

"Give it a rest. I'm a Telepath; your overflowing love is radiating toward me every single moment," Luo Qi said, his face full of weariness. "You idiot, do you know what boys hate the most? When he just wants to hang out with his buddies, and there's some stupid girl who always wants to be the boss following behind, pointing fingers and gesturing, as if the boy needs her comfort."

Guan Xinyue's open mouth closed.

"In short, humans are just that useless."

Guan Xinyue bit her lip, and after a long while, said, "That's quite a grand theme."

She had only thought of that sentence; if it were the old Luo Qi hearing someone else say these words, he would surely have said that line sarcastically.
