Chapter 909: Sanpimu Star (2)

~7 min read 1,224 words

The observation deck is located on the upper part of the hull, a semi-circular transparent dome structure that provides an almost 360-degree view of space.

When Woke arrived, there were already some soldiers scattered about inside.

Some were just quietly watching the starry sky, while others were gathered together talking in low voices.

Woke found a quiet corner to sit down and adjusted the seat angle to better view Sanpimu Star.

From this position, one could see the massive defensive fortifications on the planet's surface.

Those energy conduits winding for tens of thousands of kilometers, and those strategic-level turrets, their massive outlines were clear even from orbit.

"Breathtaking, isn't it?"

A voice came from nearby.

Woke turned his head and saw a Fengqi Military officer standing not far away.

The insignia on his shoulder strap indicated he was at the Department Head level.

Woke immediately stood up and saluted.

"Sir!"

He returned the salute and signaled for Woke to relax.

"No need to be so formal during break time, soldier. I am Kemake, the new Department Head of the communications department."

"Kadan Woke, communications department, sir."

Kemake walked to the observation window beside Woke and began to speak.

"I know you, Woke. Your performance evaluation is excellent. Commander Larsen specifically noted your ability to 'remain calm under pressure' in your file."

Woke was somewhat surprised.

Larsen was Woke's previous department head, who had been transferred to another ship three months ago. He did not expect him to specifically note his performance.

"I was just doing my job."

Kemake's Third Eye opened slightly, flickering with a faint blue light.

"Humility is a virtue, but in the military, clearly recognizing your own abilities is equally important. How much do you know about the defense system of Sanpimu Star, Woke?"

This question was beyond Woke's expectations.

He was only a Private Second Class and usually would not discuss strategic issues with officers.

"Basic knowledge, sir. There are three layers of defense networks in orbit: the outer reconnaissance and Intercept circle, the middle fire strike circle, and the inner point defense circle. There are at least twenty strategic-level turrets on the surface capable of attacking ships, as well as Energy Shield Generators..."

Kemake nodded and interrupted Woke.

"Textbook answer. But true defense does not lie in that Steel and energy, but here."

He pointed to his own temple, then pointed to the ships patrolling in space outside the window.

"And there. The will of the soldiers and the fleet is the key."

Kemake was in Silence for a moment, looking at the starry sky as he asked Woke.

"Do you know why Sanpimu Star is so important?"

"Because it is the gateway to the Southern Theater, sir."

"Not only that, Sanpimu Star has a Psionic Amplifier Array, which is one of the most powerful Psionic Weapon Systems in the Star Alliance.

If the Canaan Star Alliance attacks, our Task is not only to protect this planet, but also to ensure that the amplifier array does not fall into enemy hands."

Woke held his breath.

This was information that ordinary soldiers would not be told.

The existence of the Psionic Amplifier Array had always been a rumor and had never been officially confirmed.

It is said that this weapon can amplify the power of a Psionic by thousands of times, and the powerful energy is enough to destroy an entire fleet.

"Why tell me this, sir?"

Woke could not help but ask.

Kemake's Third Eye opened, and he answered solemnly.

"Because soldiers like you may be needed to do things beyond the scope of your duties. War is not a game of chess, and soldiers are not just pawns."

At this moment, his Communication Device rang.

Kemake took a look and nodded.

"Glad to have talked with you, Woke. Remember, keep your eyes open and your mind open."

After Kemake left, Woke fell into deep thought.

As an ordinary soldier, Woke rarely needed to think about things at a strategic level.

His duty was to execute orders, maintain equipment, and operate the communication system to connect various units when needed.

Outside the observation window, a Cruiser slowly sailed past, its hull densely packed with turrets and launch silos that were awe-inspiring.

"Kadan? I guessed you were here."

A familiar voice came from behind.

Woke turned around to see Lina Thor, his closest friend on the Iron Curtain.

She had red hair and green eyes, with sharp teeth visible at the corners of her mouth; she looked much younger than her actual age, but she was one of the best navigation officers on the ship.

"Lina, off duty?"

Woke smiled at Lina.

Lina slumped into the chair beside him and said listlessly.

"Finally. Twelve hours of calculating jump windows in a row, my eyes are almost blind. Why can't those alien mathematicians invent some simpler navigation algorithms?"

"Because the universe isn't simple to begin with. Want something to drink?"

Vulkan quoted what the instructor often said.

"Of course, double caffeine, if the synthesizer is still working properly."

Lina rubbed her eyes and said.

Woke walked toward the synthesizer on the side and prepared a drink for Lina.

When he returned to his seat, she was staring blankly at Sanpimu Star.

"I heard new recruits are arriving today?"

She took the drink and asked.

Vulkan nodded and replied.

"There is also a Tali Psionic assigned to the communications department. Torik thinks this is very unusual."

Lina whistled.

"A Tali? Interesting. Usually, they are assigned to more... protective positions. Unless..."

"Unless what?"

Lina lowered her voice and said.

"Unless Command anticipates a heavy need for Psionic Communicator use. You know, when conventional communications are jammed."

Woke pondered this point.

Psionic Communicator is an advanced communication method for the Star Alliance military, transmitting information through well-trained Psionics, and is almost impossible to Intercept or jam.

But it is very taxing on the user and is usually only used in emergencies.

"Do you think something is going to happen?"

Lina shrugged and said.

"On Sanpimu Star, something is always about to happen. That is why this is a military fortress."

She took a sip of the drink and stuck out her slender tongue.

"Still tastes just as bad. I really miss real coffee."

The two chatted for a while, discussing gossip on the ship, newly released holographic dramas, and entertainment facilities they might visit during their next leave.

In the orbit of Sanpimu Star, there is a rest station built specifically for soldiers, offering various entertainment and relaxation facilities, from multi-gravity sports fields to cross-species spas.

But Woke's thoughts returned from time to time to his conversation with Officer Kemake.

Why did he choose to share information about the Psionic Amplifier Array with a common soldier like himself?

This was beyond his security Xu Ke level.

An hour later, Lina left to rest, and Woke decided to stay a while longer.

The people on the observation deck gradually thinned out, leaving only a few soldiers like Woke enjoying a moment of tranquility.

Suddenly, the ship's notification chime for shift changes and important announcements sounded.

"Attention all personnel, a routine defense system test will be conducted in one hour. Please have all stations prepared. Repeat, a routine defense system test will be conducted in one hour."

Woke sighed, knowing it was time to go back.
