Chapter 65: Ascension of the Keeper of Knowledge
Bishop An Ge Man's sermon did not last long, ending after about ten minutes. After the sermon, Bishop An Ge Man gathered everyone to pray to the God of Knowledge and Wisdom.
"The power of knowledge, the power of reason, God of wisdom."
Leike Dun also prayed to the God of Knowledge along with those around him, and as the prayer progressed, Leike Dun felt his spirit being somehow purified, making his mind much clearer.
"Are there church members secretly bestowing blessings during the prayer? Or is it just feedback from the collective prayer to the God of Knowledge? Uh, does thinking about this now count as blasphemy?" Leike Dun strained to suppress the wandering thoughts in his mind.
When the prayer ended, the believers in the church drifted out in small groups, some heading to the confessional, others leaving offerings in the offering box.
Leike Dun, at the end of the line, also dropped two gold li-suo into the offering box.
"You arrived early; did yesterday's medicine improve your mental state?" Bishop An Ge Man asked with a smile upon seeing Leike Dun.
"Hmm, when I got up this morning I felt my spirit was much more lively; that medicine seems to have a reinforcing effect on the mind," Leike Dun asked curiously.
Bishop An Ge Man nodded slightly, motioning Leike Dun to follow, then turned toward the rest room at the back of the church.
"I did add specific ingredients to that medicine; I didn't expect you to perceive the change in your spirit so accurately. When you have free time, write me a report of your post‑medicine sensations, so I can fine‑tune the formula," Bishop An Ge Man said while leading the way.
"Uh, okay," Leike Dun stammered, surprised that there would actually be a post‑medicine feeling to report.
"Wait here for a moment; I'll fetch the ingredients and brew a magic elixir for you," Bishop An Ge Man led Leike Dun into a rest room and left to prepare the elixir.
"I hope I won't have to write another reflection after I take the magic elixir and ascend! Compared with other churches, the Knowledge Church's style is really novel," Leike Dun muttered to himself.
After waiting about five minutes in the rest room, Bishop An Ge Man returned carrying a silvery magic elixir that glimmered faintly and swirled with many bubbles.
"If you're ready, you can take this elixir now. Of course, if you feel you need to adjust your condition, you may wait a bit longer, but not too long—prepared elixirs can't sit for extended periods," Bishop An Ge Man said, handing over the elixir.
Leike Dun reached out and took the silvery elixir from Bishop An Ge Man. The moment he grasped it, he felt the bottle was somewhat heavy, as if mercury had been mixed in.
After giving the elixir a careful glance, Leike Dun tipped his head and poured it directly into his mouth.
It felt like drinking a chewable jelly, but the elixir slid down his throat and was instantly absorbed.
Leike Dun felt his head grow dull and heavy again, as countless tiny specks of light flickered in his mind. His body seemed infused with mercury, so heavy he could not move.
The process lasted only about half a minute; the heaviness vanished, replaced by an unusually vigorous body and spirit—the elixir delivered a comprehensive boost.
Leike Dun closed his eyes and examined the internal changes; the most obvious was the strengthening of his physique, now accompanied by knowledge of weapon use, combat techniques, and some ritual magic, as well as exceptional memory.
What concerned Leike Dun most were the extraordinary abilities wielded by the Keeper of Knowledge, of which there are three:
Piercing the Mist: can, to a certain extent, see through disguises and illusions, detect subtle traces around, and quickly discern the mechanisms of traps and devices.
Scene Profiling: rapidly analyzes and reconstructs events that occurred within a certain area.
Gun‑fighting Art: temporarily boosts physical attributes and reaction speed, granting skill in melee with firearms and precise shooting.
In addition to these three new extraordinary abilities, his previously mastered quick thinking was enhanced, and the elixir greatly amplified memory, logical reasoning, and comprehension.
At this stage, whether one was a top student or an underachiever, the elixir elevates them to the level of a study god. With willingness, a Keeper of Knowledge can master and comprehend massive amounts of knowledge in a short time.
As he adapted to the changes brought by the internal elixir, Leike Dun felt that part of the elixir had already been digested after ingestion.
Leike Dun could guess that some of his prior actions had already aligned with the Keeper of Knowledge's role guidelines, constituting a degree of pre‑roleplay.
Thus, the moment he took the Keeper of Knowledge's elixir, some was digested, and his spirituality remained stable despite the recent ascension.
"It seems your ascension was successful," Bishop An Ge Man's voice sounded beside him, interrupting Leike Dun's contemplation.
"Yes, I am now a Sequence Seven Keeper of Knowledge," Leike Dun said, his face breaking into a bright smile.
"A Sequence Seven Keeper of Knowledge, also called the 'Detective,' belongs to the profession focused on knowledge mastery and deduction, with decent combat and device‑handling skills, qualifying as a martial‑arts master, deduction master, and ritual‑magic master," Bishop An Ge Man explained further.
"Since the ascension is complete, go back and familiarize yourself with the abilities, and remember to write me a report of your post‑medicine sensations," Bishop An Ge Man, seeing Leike Dun in good condition, said no more and let him leave the church.
After leaving the church, Leike Dun took Tu Ba Ge straight to the Executor Squad, needing to ask Xi Ya how the bishop wants the post‑medicine feelings written.
"This feels like going back to university, like having to write a film review!" Leike Dun was speechless, never expecting his sarcastic thought from yesterday to materialize today.
"Boss, is Sequence Seven really that impressive?" Tu Ba Ge perched on Leike Dun's shoulder and, right after leaving the church, couldn't help asking.
"It is indeed stronger than before, but a reader's path only undergoes its first qualitative change at Sequence Six, the first step toward omniscience," Leike Dun replied cheerfully to the rabbit on his shoulder.
"What about me? Which sequence will give me my first qualitative change?" Tu Ba Ge asked curiously.
"Probably Sequence Six as well; I recall Sequence Six biologists can hybridize various organisms, producing odd results," Leike Dun said after a brief thought.
"I only got the Sequence Seven elixir formula from Xi Ya; forget about Sequence Six for now, and you're just a rabbit who dislikes reading—how could you possibly hybridize useful products?" Leike Dun gave Tu Ba Ge a light rebuke.
"I only turned into a magical creature, not a human; why do I still have to study?" Tu Ba Ge complained angrily at Leike Dun's words.
"Your next sequence is Physician; an illiterate rabbit can't become a physician," Leike Dun pinched Tu Ba Ge's increasingly plump rabbit face.
"You've gotten fatter again; looks like I really need to monitor your weight loss," Leike Dun muttered to himself.
Ignoring Tu Ba Ge's irate outburst, Leike Dun arrived at the Executor Squad's office.
He pushed the door open, expecting to be the last to arrive today, but only Joseph and Xi Ya were in the office.
"Not bad! The ascension process seems smooth, and hardly any spirituality spilled over," Xi Ya exclaimed upon first seeing Leike Dun.
Joseph's eyes widened at Xi Ya's words, his gaze filled with sheer disbelief.
"Ascension? Leike Dun, you've already become a Sequence Seven Keeper of Knowledge?" Joseph said, his face a mix of shock and bitterness.
Joseph was the most upset by the news; he had just received from the squad leader that today he could ascend to Sequence Eight, yet before he could, Leike Dun had already ascended to Sequence Seven.
He thought he finally matched his teammates, only to find one of them had sprinted ahead; Joseph felt conflicted.
