Chapter 66: Ran Away From Home
"Dong dong~" Lei Kedun knocked on the door of Captain Yi Kang Dun's office.
"Come in!" Captain Yi Kang Dun's voice came from inside the office.
After Lei Kedun pushed the door and entered the captain's office, he saw the captain's right arm still wrapped in gauze, and the forearm from wrist to elbow also bandaged with a layer of gauze.
"Captain, you're injured?" Lei Kedun asked, a bit surprised.
Although yesterday Xi Ya said she had encountered a Sequence‑5 Crimson Scholar, Lei Kedun hadn't really taken it to heart at the time.
In Lei Kedun's understanding, a qualified scholar must possess a great amount of extraordinary knowledge and abilities; although certainly not as strong as a Crimson Scholar, they are well‑rounded, and while they can't win in a fight, self‑preservation is always fine.
But now Lei Kedun feels he severely underestimated how the potency of demonic elixirs for the extraordinary scales with sequence. The higher the sequence, the larger the gap between two sequences, and a cross‑level challenge is more like a suicide mission.
"You've already been promoted to Keeper of Knowledge? Not bad. Mr. Ke Si's injury is serious, Xi Ya is about to leave, and our squad's combat power just dropped a tier; your promotion perfectly fills the vacancy," Captain Yi Kang Dun surveyed Lei Kedun for a moment, then said warmly.
"Is Mr. Ke Si's injury very serious?" Lei Kedun asked with some concern.
If yesterday he hadn't avoided the werewolf and sought the captain's help, but had stayed to face that werewolf, the later outcome would have been different.
"Don't blame yourself; your action wasn't wrong. Given the circumstances then, if you had stayed to face that werewolf, the final result could only have been death," Captain Yi Kang Dun saw what Lei Kedun was thinking and comforted him first.
Then he added, "Ke Si's bodily wounds are okay; the main issue is a severe werewolf toxin infection, requiring long convalescence. No need to worry—after two weeks you'll be able to see Ke Si."
"Hmm." Lei Kedun nodded, his mood not great, and asked, "Then why didn't Qiao Xi and Ms. Jie Xi Ka also come?"
"Qiao Xi was also slightly injured yesterday, not too serious; I gave him a day off. As for Jie Xi Ka, she took leave early; the New Year is approaching, and she plans to vacation at the seaside with her husband," Captain Yi Kang Dun explained with a light laugh.
"Ah, so that's it." Lei Kedun, realizing he had overthought, felt a bit embarrassed.
"Besides telling me about your promotion, did you come to see me for anything else?" Captain Yi Kang Dun interrupted Lei Kedun's awkwardness.
"Captain, I want to apply for some extraordinary materials. I found my previous submission wasn't comprehensive; this time I'll buy them with money—I think I've run out of quota," Lei Kedun originally intended to request some materials directly, but suddenly remembered he had already overdrawn his quota last time, so he changed to buying some.
"Sure, we still have a fair amount of ordinary extraordinary materials here at the church. Write me a list of what you need, and bring the money tomorrow to collect them from me," Captain Yi Kang Dun decisively agreed to Lei Kedun's request.
"Alright, Captain." Lei Kedun nodded and left the captain's office.
Lei Kedun had originally thought that applying for another batch of extraordinary materials from the church would be quite difficult, but didn't expect the captain to agree so promptly.
"Perhaps it's because even as a Keeper of Knowledge, the extraordinary abilities one wields are still auxiliary, and most church members enjoy researching various things, so the Knowledge Church is rather lenient regarding extraordinary materials!" Lei Kedun speculated in his mind.
In any case, this is good news for Lei Kedun; at least he doesn't have to gamble at wild extraordinary gatherings and can directly obtain the materials he needs.
When Lei Kedun drafted the material list this time, he also included auxiliary items for his secretive path, which was essentially the main purpose of his request.
"Becoming a Sequence‑7 wizard should let me know what that huge ring I meditate on actually is," Lei Kedun thought silently.
Lei Kedun returned to his seat and saw Tu Ba Ge actually reading a book on the desk, though it was an illustrated introductory book.
"Why did you start reading an introductory book? Ran out of picture books?" Lei Kedun asked curiously.
"I will study hard, to become a cultured rabbit," Tu Ba Ge declared ambitiously.
Lei Kedun stared, a bit stunned, at this rabbit that seemed to have been given a burst of energy; he had just left, and the rabbit suddenly had an epiphany?
"What did you tell your little bunny? I just said that after reaching Sequence 7 it can rapidly spawn plants, and it suddenly started reading," Xi Ya said teasingly.
"Uh, maybe it wants to toss a seed in the morning and harvest a truckload of watermelons at night," Lei Kedun replied, a little speechless.
Had he known that this rabbit was so easily motivated, why bother telling it so much? Just tell it that as long as it keeps advancing, the fruit it eats will grow according to its wishes.
"Indeed, what a proactive, action‑filled rabbit!" Joseph, listening to the two, couldn't help but exclaim.
"Forget the rabbit, you two big boys, anyone want to spend this wonderful morning with me, your sister? There's only this one chance!" Xi Ya flicked her red hair aside, saying seductively.
Joseph's ears turned a bit red, he averted his gaze, unwilling to look at Xi Ya any longer. Lei Kedun just shrugged helplessly.
"The landlord's house has no grain left; yesterday's meal ate up my few savings, now my wallet is empty," Lei Kedun shook his head, indicating he had no money.
"Little Lei Kedun, why does it stop after just one? Sister I'm still hoping for a shortcut!" Xi Ya said with a disappointed face.
Lei Kedun couldn't help but mutter internally, "I suspect you're driving, and you have the evidence."
"You guys weren't on a mission yesterday? What else did you do?" Joseph asked incredulously.
"Because when Sister Xi Ya gave me the rabbit, I promised to treat her to a meal, but it got postponed to yesterday, and the beautiful, gentle Sister Xi Ya mercilessly feasted me; my wallet is visibly emaciated," Lei Kedun mimicked the exaggerated tone.
"Aside from the beautiful and gentle remark being accurate, the rest is just Little Lei Kedun's discontent and slander."
Joseph, speechless, pressed his forehead, feeling his head full of black lines. He thought he had just acted a bit stupidly; he knew exactly what kind of person Xi Ya was, yet still fell for it.
"Xi Ya sister, are you leaving this afternoon?" Lei Kedun changed the topic.
"Leaving tomorrow, but before I go I have to pack my luggage! Little Lei Kedun thinks I want you to leave quickly?" Xi Ya said sadly and plaintively.
"How could I have such a treasonous thought! I just feel the squad became unusually quiet." Lei Kedun tried to steer the conversation back on track.
"So Little Lei Kedun means I'm noisy when I'm here?" Xi Ya continued feigning sorrow.
Lei Kedun didn't want to speak any more; Xi Ya's drama was just too much.
"Ms. Xi Ya is leaving Ma Dan? Also taking a New Year vacation?" Joseph couldn't help his curiosity and asked.
"No, I'm transferring out of Ma Dan; I might not return later." Xi Ya smiled and shook her head, a bit wistful.
"Ah? Why?" Joseph was stunned; this answer wasn't what he expected.
"Xi Ya has a new mission; she'll head to the Southern Continent later, timing unspecified," Captain Yi Kang Dun stepped out of his office, his hand still wrapped in bandages, and said.
"Southern Continent? Why? So sudden?" Joseph asked several questions, full of doubt.
"The specifics are classified, so I won't tell you. Today I'll give everyone a day off. What do you want to do or eat? I'll foot the bill," Captain Yi Kang Dun suddenly announced the holiday news.
"Sure enough, everyone despises each other? Even the captain leads the celebration!" Xi Ya said with a heavy tone.
"Today Xi Ya's drama level is exploding! Is this because she's about to leave, so she just lets loose?" Lei Kedun couldn't hold back, muttering internally.
"Giving you a day off without cause already violates regulations; if you all don't want it, we can stay in the office and work properly," Captain Yi Kang Dun said, staring at Xi Ya word for word.
"Let's set off right now; since the captain is treating, the two big boys needn't be shy!" Xi Ya jumped over the previous conversation and changed the subject.
The first round of the showdown between Xi Ya and the captain, the captain wins!
