Chapter 791: I Just Remember That
I just remember that.
May 14: I just remember that.
――――――Liu Guozong's tampering with Dream of the Red Chamber, part three.
Someone said, fate is to repay kindness. 'Returning tears' as a way of repaying kindness, however, is unprecedented in ancient and modern times.
Tears are the expression of inner feelings. But not all feelings need to be expressed with tears. The ways of expressing feelings are diverse. Among all ways of expressing feelings, only tears, this form, can move people most deeply. Tears are a component of life, and also life's most precious. Daiyu's previous life was a fairy herb by the banks of the Spirit River; this fairy herb, having received the irrigation of sweet dew, prolonged its years, later also received the essence of heaven and earth, thus shed its plant form, later descended to the human world and became a beautiful girl of exceptional talent. This beautiful fairy herb's descent to the mortal world was to repay kindness. She repaid the kindness that allowed her life to be prolonged, the grace of transforming from a plant fetus**.
Before this fairy herb descended to the mortal world, it had already made a vow: having received the grace of rain and dew, I have no such water to repay; only by being reborn as a human, passing a thousand years in one go, but returning all the tears of my life to him, can I resolve the anguish in my heart.
A person who expresses all their feelings with tears throughout life, and whose feelings are directed toward only one person, with tears flowing for only that one person, is truly rare in the world, reckoned as the first of ancient and modern times. Precisely because they are the first of ancient and modern times, they possess even more legendary color and thus eternalness. From the moment Daiyu shed a drop of tear for Baoyu, that tear spring opened.
From then on, Daiyu's life's steps began with a single tear.
Baoyu's breaking of the jade was caused by Daiyu, but Baoyu's breaking of the jade was certainly not aimed at Daiyu; he was aimed at that 'nonsense' jade. According to Baoyu's reasoning: 'The sisters in the household don't have it, only I do; now that this fairy‑like sister has arrived, she doesn't have it either, why am I the only one who has it?'
Following Baoyu's saying, if one should have it, everyone should have it; if one should not have it, everyone should not have it. You have it, I have it, everyone has it. You don't have it, how can I have it?
This Baoyu is also very noble. Baoyu's nobility, however, brings pain to those who love him. When Daiyu was grieving over Baoyu's breaking of the jade, Xiren advised Daiyu: 'You'd better not overthink it!' Not overthinking makes things easy; overthinking brings trouble. Daiyu said: 'Older sister, what you say is also true; I'll just remember that.'
'I just remember that,' is exactly Daiyu's personality trait; her main task in coming to this world is 'I just remember that.' This maiden living under others' eaves, 'proud and self‑content, free of dust at present,' must remember others' kindnesses and also remember others' grudges; remember others' strengths and also remember others' shortcomings. Of course, she will not remember the wish and oath of returning tears from her previous life....
