Chapter 261: Advancing the Surgery

~4 min read 686 words

Chloe Reed stared out the window at the pitch-black night, feeling as if she, too, was in an abyss she couldn’t climb out of, no matter how hard she tried.

"I don’t know why he’s so persistent. Isn’t it obvious enough that I don’t love him?"

Miles Hawthorne scoffed. "He just can’t accept it. You clearly loved him, so why did you stop? He chooses to ignore the real problems and just assumes you’re being unreasonable. I’m speechless..."

Chloe Reed’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. "There’s no point in talking about this now. You’ve suffered so much because of this divorce, and in the end, it was all for nothing. I’m so sorry."

Miles Hawthorne was silent for a moment, then suddenly said, "Don’t withdraw the lawsuit yet. Give me two days."

Chloe Reed froze. "What do you mean?"

Miles Hawthorne said, "I might have a way to help you."

Her heart, which had become like a pool of stagnant water, seemed to be infused with life again. Chloe Reed’s voice trembled. "Are... are you serious?"

’Preston Vance, the head of the Vance Group, couldn’t even find a top-tier expert. How could Miles Hawthorne?’

Miles Hawthorne’s tone was vague. "Anyway, just wait a bit. I’ll get back to you soon."

"Okay."

Chloe Reed replied.

’Things have already come to this. What other choice did she have?’

’Obviously, none.’

’So, she might as well give it a try.’

Miles Hawthorne hastily hung up. Chloe Reed stood by the window for a long while before finally returning to the hospital room.

She hadn’t slept much in the past two days, but now, knowing her grandmother would soon have the surgery and recover, her heart eased a little.

Curled up on the small bed, she dozed off for a bit.

In a daze, she felt someone arrive and sit beside her. A jacket was draped over her.

That familiar scent... it filled her with disgust.

She opened her eyes and saw Walker Grant sitting beside her, his dark, phoenix-like eyes fixed on her.

"Did I wake you?"

He asked in a low voice.

Chloe Reed sat up, and his jacket slipped off her. She didn’t touch it.

"What do you want?"

Her tone was icy.

Walker Grant stared at her and asked, "When are you withdrawing the lawsuit?"

The surgery had been scheduled for two days later precisely to give her time to withdraw the lawsuit.

Chloe Reed looked at him and said, "I want to wait until after my grandmother’s surgery."

"That won’t work, Chloe."

Walker Grant sighed softly. "What if you change your mind after the surgery?"

Chloe Reed looked at him coldly. "Forcing my hand with tactics like this... aren’t you afraid I’ll hate you?"

But Walker Grant just said, "As long as you’re by my side."

Chloe Reed couldn’t understand his thinking.

She simply looked away and said, "I’ll do it the day after tomorrow."

That was the day before her grandmother’s surgery.

She had bought herself one more day, hoping only for good news from Miles Hawthorne.

Walker Grant looked at her cold yet pale face but didn’t say anything more.

Chloe Reed was on edge the entire time. Then, the next afternoon, Doctor William suddenly appeared. "We’re operating on your grandmother in an hour. I need you to sign this."

Chloe Reed was stunned, shocked that he had suddenly changed his mind.

’But he had disobeyed Walker Grant and was performing the surgery early!’

’This was undoubtedly good news!’

She signed immediately. Before she even had a chance to ask why, Doctor William was already having her grandmother wheeled away for pre-op checkups.

When Walker Grant heard the news, his brows furrowed deeply. He called Doctor William.

"What’s going on? Isn’t the surgery scheduled for tomorrow?"

Doctor William, however, said, "Mr. Grant, the old lady’s condition is very poor. Delaying any further will only lower the chances of a successful surgery. If something were to happen to her, the relationship between you and Mrs. Grant would only fracture even more, wouldn’t it? I imagine that’s not a situation you’d want to see."
