Chapter 268: The Missus is in Trouble

~4 min read 696 words

Walker’s brow darkened at her words, his sharp gaze fixed on her. "You only want the Reed Group to pull its investment?"

"That’s right." Chloe Reed nodded. "I won’t stop you if you insist on helping her, but the Reed Group has to pull its investment."

"Why won’t you stop me?" Walker Grant’s tone grew heavy as well.

A strange tension filled the air around them.

Chloe Reed furrowed her brow slightly. "Even if I tried to stop you, would you listen?"

Walker Grant’s thin lips pressed into a straight line. He stared at her for a long while before finally asking, "Why do you want the Reed Group to pull its investment?"

"She’s an adopted daughter. What right does she have to the Reed family’s money?" Chloe Reed said bluntly.

Walker Grant averted his gaze. "Let’s eat first. I’ll consider what you said after the meal."

Chloe Reed looked at him suspiciously. "It’s such a simple matter, and you still need to think about it?"

"So, Chloe, in what capacity are you bringing this up with me?" Walker Grant’s expression softened, returning to its usual mildness. "I only listen to my wife."

Chloe Reed gave him a cool look, her bright eyes filled with scorn.

"Are we divorced yet?"

Walker Grant fell silent.

Chloe Reed didn’t hold back, picking up her chopsticks and starting to eat.

She really was hungry.

’The court hearing is inevitable, and our marriage will be dissolved sooner or later. So, what’s the harm in humoring him for a bit? It’s no loss to me.’

Walker Grant watched her with a heavy gaze. She was completely unfazed, having retracted all her thorns.

But he still felt the distance between them growing ever wider.

Chloe Reed paid no mind to his inner turmoil. Once she’d had her fill, she looked at him. "Have you decided?"

"Alright."

Walker Grant had agreed.

He agreed because he figured that if he didn’t, she would find another way—one that could introduce variables he couldn’t control.

Just like how Miles Hawthorne’s sudden intervention had made Doctor William change his mind.

Chloe Reed’s lips curved into a smile. "Good. I’ll be waiting."

She stood up to leave.

But his hand closed around her wrist.

The heat from his palm was intense, sending a steady warmth through her. His voice was heavy. "Chloe, stay with me a little longer."

"I have to go to the hospital and be with my grandmother." Chloe Reed pulled her hand free and left the office without a backward glance.

Walker Grant watched her leave, and that feeling of being out of control washed over him again.

He loathed this feeling.

He sat in his office for a long time before finally getting up to leave.

...

Chloe Reed was in a good mood as she walked out of the Grant Group building. Walker hadn’t pulled any last-minute tricks to stop her.

’The Reed Group was going to pull its funding from Sunny Reed’s company.’

’She could forget about getting her hands on the Reed family’s money!’

She walked toward her car, only to see a sanitation worker squatting beside it, though she couldn’t tell what they were doing.

"Excuse me, what are you doing?" Chloe Reed asked as she approached, puzzled.

The sanitation worker said, "I’m so sorry, I scratched your car. How much is this going to cost me?"

Hearing this, Chloe Reed smiled and said, "It’s okay, it’s not a big deal. You can go."

With that, she unlocked the car, opened the driver’s side door, and started to get in.

But in the next instant, the sanitation worker, who had been squatting the entire time, suddenly sprang up and swiftly clamped a hand over Chloe Reed’s face.

A sharp, pungent odor assaulted her nostrils. Chloe Reed struggled for only a few moments before her eyes fluttered shut and she lost consciousness.

The sanitation worker bundled her into the back seat and then slipped into the driver’s seat.

As the car slowly pulled away, the expressions of two hidden bodyguards changed in an instant, and they immediately followed.

One of them called Walker Grant.

"Mr. Grant, something’s happened to your wife!"
