Chapter 269: Kidnapped, But Fine

~4 min read 638 words

Walker Grant had just come downstairs when he heard what the bodyguard said. His expression instantly darkened.

"Share your location with me."

They were already tailing the car, so he followed, dispatching men to intercept and block its path.

Meanwhile, inside the white BMW.

The sanitation worker glanced at the rearview mirror and scoffed. He hadn’t expected someone to be secretly protecting her, but unfortunately for her, they were incompetent.

His gaze fell on the woman in the backseat, a look of scrutiny in his eyes.

The sanitation worker rapidly changed lanes, overtook cars, then turned and accelerated, quickly shaking off the pursuing vehicle.

He then parked the car on a stretch of road with no security cameras. He got out, opened the rear door, grabbed Chloe Reed’s face, and studied it intently.

He even pried open her eyelids to examine her eyes.

He took a few photos of her face, plucked a few strands of her hair, and only then did he close the car door and turn to leave.

As he walked, he shed his disguise.

The head covering, mask, and costume were all thrown into a trash can.

Then, a tall, slender figure disappeared into the darkness.

...

Chloe Reed was woken by someone calling her name.

She groggily opened her eyes and met Walker Grant’s anxious, dark eyes.

She froze for a moment, sat up, and then remembered what had happened before she passed out.

She quickly checked herself over, relieved to find her clothes were undisturbed and she wasn’t injured.

"You’re all right," Walker Grant said, seeing her reaction.

Chloe Reed let out a sigh of relief and asked, "Where is this?"

Walker Grant told her the location. They hadn’t left the city; they were just on the outskirts.

When he’d rushed over, he’d found her car parked on the side of the road. Opening the door, he saw her unconscious in the back seat.

"Chloe, do you remember what your kidnapper looked like?" Walker Grant asked in a low voice.

Chloe Reed furrowed her brow in concentration. "A sanitation worker," she said. "I didn’t get a clear look at his face."

She hadn’t been the least bit wary of him, and that’s how it had happened. She couldn’t help but feel annoyed with herself.

But then, she wondered, ’Who kidnapped me? And why?’

Walker Grant’s expression darkened. "Chloe, I’m going to increase your security detail. I don’t want something like this to happen again."

Chloe Reed frowned slightly but said nothing.

Having inhaled some sort of knockout drug, her head still felt fuzzy. She couldn’t begin to guess who would want to kidnap her, so she decided to stop thinking about it.

Walker Grant drove back into the city.

When they arrived at the hospital, Charles Reed had already left, but Autumn Linton had stayed behind.

"Chloe, Walker, you two should go home and rest. I can take care of things here," Autumn Linton said softly.

But Chloe Reed said, "I don’t trust you here. You should go."

Autumn Linton looked extremely awkward. "Chloe, what nonsense are you talking about?"

Chloe Reed had already sat down. "Go," she said. "Let’s not argue and disturb my grandmother’s rest."

Walker Grant spoke up as well. "Mom, I’ll have someone take you home to rest. You can come back tomorrow."

Autumn Linton had no choice but to concede.

But she felt a pang of anxiety. ’They arrived together,’ she thought. ’Does that mean Chloe Reed convinced Walker Grant to pull his investment? That can’t be allowed to happen.’

She left the hospital and hurriedly called Sunny Reed to tell her what had happened.

「Inside the hospital.」

Chloe Reed glanced at the man. "You can go now, too."

But Walker Grant said in a low voice, "You were just targeted tonight. There’s no way I’m leaving."
