Chapter 291: I’ll Tell You Whatever You Want to Know
Miles Hawthorne asked with a smile, "How’s your grandmother doing lately?"
"She’s recovering very well," Chloe Reed said. "I haven’t had a chance to thank you properly. Are you free tonight? Let me treat you to dinner."
"If you put it that way, then I just so happen to be free," Miles Hawthorne readily agreed. "Let’s have hot pot. I haven’t had it in a long time."
"Okay."
The two made plans, and Chloe Reed hung up the phone.
「That evening.」
Upon entering the hot pot restaurant, a rich aroma completely enveloped her. She turned her head and saw that Miles Hawthorne had already arrived. He waved at her.
"You’re so early," Chloe Reed said in surprise as she walked over and sat down across from him.
Miles Hawthorne smiled faintly. "You haven’t heard? Walker Grant is targeting me. I was dismissed from my position at the Hawthorne Group. I’m unemployed now."
Chloe Reed’s expression grew solemn. "It’s because you helped me with the divorce, isn’t it? I’ve really dragged you into this."
But Miles Hawthorne shook his head. "It’s more than that. He also remembers that I helped you take care of Doctor William. How can he be so petty?"
A cold glint flashed in Chloe Reed’s eyes. "No matter what he does, he can’t stop me from getting a divorce."
"That’s the spirit!" Miles Hawthorne snapped his fingers. "As long as you stand your ground, then my suffering won’t have been in vain."
His attitude was optimistic, but Chloe Reed’s heart was filled with guilt. If he hadn’t gotten involved in her affairs, Miles Hawthorne wouldn’t be going through this.
At the same time, her heart was filled with resentment toward Walker Grant.
’If he has a problem, he should come after me. Why target innocent people?’
’He’s gone too far!’
The divided hot pot was brought to the table, its broth bubbling away and giving off a tempting aroma.
While dipping vegetables into the pot, Chloe Reed asked, "I’m still curious, how exactly did you handle Doctor William?"
Miles Hawthorne gave her a meaningful look. "You want to know?"
"Mhm," she said, nodding earnestly.
"I’ll tell you after you win the case." Miles Hawthorne’s lips curved into a smile. "When that time comes, I’ll tell you anything you want to know."
A strange feeling washed over Chloe Reed.
It was very odd, mixed with a faint sense of unease.
But the feeling came and went so quickly that she didn’t have time to grasp it or figure it out.
Just then, Miles Hawthorne called out that the meat was ready, and her attention was diverted.
Through the hazy steam, Miles Hawthorne’s playful expression vanished as he used a ladle to scoop fish balls into her bowl.
After a satisfyingly hot meal, they left the restaurant feeling refreshed. The night breeze was cool and pleasant against their skin.
Just then, Miles Hawthorne’s phone rang. He answered it and, a moment later, said to her, "Something’s come up. I have to go."
"Okay, bye."
Chloe Reed waved at him with a smile.
Miles Hawthorne turned, got into his car, and drove away, while Chloe Reed started walking in the other direction.
Her car was parked over there.
But when she looked up, she saw a tall, slender figure standing by her car. He held a cigarette between his fingers, his expression cold and indifferent.
She frowned slightly, her pace slowing.
’What’s going on?’
’Didn’t Daniel Hayes take care of the people he had watching me?’
’How did he know I was here?’
’Did he arrange for someone else to follow me?’
’Looks like I’ll have to get Daniel Hayes to do another sweep.’
By the time she reached him, her expression had grown cold. "What do you want?"
Walker Grant tossed the cigarette butt aside, stamped it out, and fixed his deep, almond-shaped eyes on her face. "Was the hot pot here any good?"
Chloe Reed was clearly in no mood for small talk. "Go try it yourself if you want to know."
As she spoke, she took out her keys and unlocked the car.
Then, she watched as he opened the passenger-side door and got in.
