Chapter 2847: Why Does My Wife Follow Me Every Day 07?

~8 min read 1,545 words

In the coffee shop, Jin Chen carried the newly received bouquet up to the second floor, placed it on the bedside table, sat on the bed's edge, and gazed at the dark‑toned bouquet.

【Cold Medicine.】He called out to the system in his mind.

【Present, Lord Jin Chen.】999 responded immediately.

【I've had plenty of contact with Yun Jian these past two days,】 Jin Chen said, lightly plucking the petals with his fingertips, 【Why is there no Heartbeat Value notification?】

999 fell silent.

After about five seconds, it cautiously said, 【Sorry, Lord Jin Chen…… I haven't updated the relevant plugin yet.】

【Currently my permissions only allow me to detect Blackening Value; I lack the function to detect the Main God's Heartbeat Value, which will unlock after a system upgrade. I am applying to the Quick Transmigration Bureau for an update package……】

Jin Chen: 【……】

He rubbed his brow.

Forget it, I should have realized earlier—999 is a temporary starter system issued to him, so it's normal for its functions to be incomplete.

Jin Chen stopped worrying about the Heartbeat Value, looked at the bouquet before him, and suddenly noticed a card tucked inside the wrapping paper.

He pulled it out; the card bore a string of numbers…… possibly a phone number.

Jin Chen raised an eyebrow, took out his phone, and entered the string of numbers into the search bar.

The search results popped up; the avatar was a simple white, and the nickname consisted only of the character "Yun".

Jin Chen smiled, curling the corner of his mouth.

Thus, he didn't notice that, when he placed the flower vase on the windowsill, one of the blue flower's petals had an unusually deep hue, as if something extra had been added.

——

After several days of continuous rain, the downpour finally eased; sunlight broke through the clouds, shining on the damp streets, with puddles reflecting the sky.

In the coffee shop, Jin Chen stood before the roaster, watching the beans tumble inside, while Tan Quan wiped the table with a rag, on and off.

As Jin Chen puts it, you can't just eat and stay for free; besides, this kid has boundless energy and strength with nowhere to put it, so it's perfect to keep him around to help—hence his assigned job is waiter.

Xiao Liu was cleaning the grinder, saying as he worked, "Boss, our Yirgacheffe and Mandheling stocks are running low—should we contact the supplier for more?"

"Hmm, noted."

Jin Chen acknowledged, rolling up his sleeves to his elbows, "Make a list this afternoon; I'll contact Old Chen later."

Tan Quan held a rag, initially wiping the table properly, but after a few minutes he started looking around, tossed the rag into the water bucket, and slumped limp in his chair.

"Bored as hell! Jin Chen, can I do something else?"

"Mop the floor." Jin Chen didn't turn back.

"I just mopped it!"

"Then mop it again."

Tan Quan let out a lament and reluctantly got up.

The waiter Xiao Min looked at Tan Quan's state and couldn't help laughing, "Don't complain—being taken in by the boss is already not bad."

"I know, I know." Tan Quan scratched his head.

As they were speaking, a commotion came from outside the shop door; Jin Chen turned his head, looked through the glass door, and saw a man in work clothes standing outside.

The man, about fifty, had his rubber shoes caked with mud; he stared at the coffee shop's door, raising his hand several times then lowering it, wanting to enter but not daring, merely rubbing his hands and gazing pleadingly inside.

Jin Chen glanced for a few seconds, then told Xiao Min, "Open the door."

Xiao Min hurried over and pulled the door open; the worker outside jumped back, shrinking away.

"Uncle, what's the matter?" Xiao Liu asked.

The worker rubbed his hands, voice a bit strained, speaking with a regional accent, "Um… could I get a cup of water? I'll stay outside; just give me a disposable cup…."

Jin Chen walked over; he was tall and looked aloof, making the worker even more nervous.

"Come in." Jin Chen stepped aside, "Xiao Min, pour a cup of warm water."

The worker hesitated, then stepped inside, afraid his muddy shoes would dirty the floor.

Xiao Min poured a cup of warm water, added two lemon slices, and handed it over.

"Thank you, thank you……" The worker took the cup with both hands, thanked repeatedly, and drank it quickly, as if he'd been thirsty for a long time.

Tan Quan glanced over, felt pleased, then poured two large cups of water, shared them with the worker, and squatted down to drink together.

Xiao Min: 「……」

Jin Chen looked toward the street outside; a small cart was parked at the curb, piled high with goods covered by a plastic sheet.

After finishing his water, the worker carefully set the cup on the counter, "That…… I'm leaving, thanks for the water."

After the door closed, the water‑filled Tan Quan was again called to mop the floor, wailing as he hurried toward the utility room.

Xiao Liu leaned in and whispered to Jin Chen, "Boss, I heard that a few nearby streets have recently opened five or six guesthouses; there are lots of renovation workers, but the foreman seems unreliable, wages are being dragged out, and these days I keep seeing them loitering around here."

Jin Chen: "Carry two buckets of water to the roadside, put up a note saying that on rainy or hot days workers can drink water for free."

Xiao Min's eyes lit up, "Great! I'll go write it right now!"

Tan Quan came over, scratched his head, "You're still pretty kind-hearted."

Jin Chen glanced at him, "More talk, less work—get to it."

"I'm on it!" Tan Quan grabbed a mop, gave it two swipes, then stopped and glanced at the coffee bean canister beside the roaster.

He reached in and grabbed a handful of beans, tossing them playfully in his hand.

"Tan Quan, the beans are expensive—lose one and your lunch gets cut in half."

"Got it, got it……" Tan Quan threw the beans back into the canister, grudgingly continued wiping the table.

Jin Chen walked back to the roaster, glanced at the time, and swept his gaze past the glass door.

On the road another cart appeared, pushed by an older man with a slightly stooped back, straining under the load; his cargo was stacked even higher than the previous cart's, swaying unsteadily.

Jin Chen furrowed his brows.

The cart climbed the slope; as it neared the flower shop's entrance, the man's strength gave out, his hand slipped, and the cart looked like it was about to tip sideways.

And right beside was the entrance of the flower shop.

Jin Chen's eyes narrowed, he pushed the door and rushed out.

He moved quickly, in a few steps he reached the cart and reached out to steady it.

At the same time, the flower shop door opened, and Yun Jian quickly walked out from inside.

The two, one on the left and one on the right, steadied the cart that was about to tip over.

But the inertia was too great; several boxes on the top layer still slid down and crashed heavily onto the waterproof tarp at the flower shop entrance that hadn't been put away yet.

The accumulated water on the tarp, from that impact, instantly poured down, drenching the nearest Yun Jian from head to toe, and also splashed Jin Chen's face.

Yun Jian stood in the inner position, getting drenched even more.

Jin Chen turned sideways, and most of the water splashed onto his face and shoulders.

"Sorry, sorry!" the old man pushing the cart apologized repeatedly, his voice trembling, "I didn't notice, I didn't notice..."

Several passing workers hurried over to help, scrambling to pick up the scattered goods.

The scene was momentarily chaotic.

Yun Jian stood there, hearing the old man's repeated apologies, the workers moving the cargo, and the sound of vehicles passing on the street.

But in his eyes, he saw only Jin Chen, not even noticing his own soaked, sticky, uncomfortable shirt, nor thinking of the potted plants he usually cherished that had been knocked over.

The sunlight happened to brighten a bit at this moment, penetrating the moist air and falling on Jin Chen's water‑droplet‑covered side profile.

Water droplets dripped from his forehead hair, sliding down the brow bone; in the sunlight they glittered, clear and clean.

Jin Chen frowned worriedly, raised his hand and wiped his face.

In Yun Jian's field of vision, this scene seemed to be infinitely slowed down, stretched out.

Then the slow motion was broken.

Jin Chen turned his head, saw Yun Jian completely soaked, grabbed his arm and pulled him back a bit.

"Watch your step, the ground is slippery." Jin Chen said, "How are you?"

Yun Jian lowered his head, saw his own shirt — light gray linen‑cotton — soaked through, clinging tightly to his body, revealing the skin tone underneath.

Yun Jian curled the corner of his lip, shook his head at Jin Chen, his voice warm and gentle, "It's fine."

Jin Chen looked at his wet curls sticking to his forehead, helpless, "You're still laughing, completely soaked."
